Wooster magic gives Scots Top 25 sweep

Leading 3-1, the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays plated six runs in the top of sixth inning, picking up their first win of the 2021 season, 9-5 over Dickinson. Despite another quick start for JHU, Ethan Hamilton and Beau Dana held the Blue Jay offense at bay in a 3-1 win for the Red Devils.

The eighth inning continues to be the "magical inning" for The College of Wooster, and senior Jay DiBacco stymied 25th-ranked Denison University with a two-hit shutout in the nightcap, as the Fighting Scots won 11-6 in extra innings, and then ran away from the Big Red 14-0 on the opening day of a four-game non-conference set between Mideast Region powers.

Trinity (Texas) scored a pair of high-scoring victories in a SCAC doubleheader against St. Thomas (Texas). Trinity pounded out 15 hits on offense and allowed just six to the home team in the opening game of the doubleheader, yet still had to battle to the end to clinch the weekend series. Jack Schmitt earned his first career win in game one, pitching 6.2 innings of relief. He allowed three runs on three hits over that stretch, though just one of those runs was earned. Joel Thomas as the game two winner to improve to 1-0 this season, which is also his first victory with the Tigers. He allowed two runs on two hits over four innings out of the bullpen, striking out five batters. Though he walked three batters in the ninth inning of game two, Harrison Durow also struck out the side to earn his second save of the season.

With a break in the conference schedule, seventh-ranked North Central College scored a 5-1 victory over DePauw University on Saturday at Zimmerman Stadium. Eight of the nine Cardinals in the lineup recorded a hit, led by a 2-for-4 showing from Swenson, while Marinec finished 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Listi was 1-for-2 from the plate with two hit by pitches, a run scored and RBI, while Wojcik also added a 1-for-2 performance with a hit by pitch and sacrifice fly.

Eighth-ranked Southern Maine improved to 7-1 on the season by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Mass-Dartmouth at Ed Flaherty Field on Saturday. The Huskies came from a run down in the seventh inning to take the opener 5-3, then return to pull away in the nightcap for an 11-2 victory. The two teams, members of the Little East Conference, split their Little East Conference doubleheader played at UMD on Thursday. Senior Gage Feeney and rookie Bryce Afthim combined on the mound to limit the Corsairs to seven hits and two walks while striking out 10. Afthim would get credit for the win going the final four innings. Southern Maine snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the sixth, and put the game away with five more in the eighth. Junior James Sinclair picked up the win on the hill going 6.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while fanning eight. Graduate student Gavin Arsenault earned his second save going the final 2.1 innings.

NC Wesleyan ran their winning streak to 10 games with their 8-5 game one win over Methodist before falling 10-2 in a rain-shortened game two from Bauer Field. Wesleyan got out to a fast 2-0 lead in game one with back to back run-scoring doubles from senior catcher Brad Pennington and sophomore 2B Davie Morgan. A Jackson Murray RBI single then made it 3-1 in the 4th before the Bishops would add three more runs in the 5th on two RBI singles from SS Nate Hibbs and Pennington and a wild pitch. Another two-run single from Pennington in the 6th made it 8-3 Bishops before MU tacked on some runs late to make the final 8-5. Pennington led the offense going 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs while Morgan also went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and two doubles. Hibbs and sophomore CF Drifton Padgett also recorded multi-hit games for the Bishops. Freshman starting pitcher Cullen Davis (1-0) picked up the win on the mound throwing 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts while freshman reliever Danny Thompson grabbed the save throwing the final 3 and 2/3 innings allowing just one earned run on 3 hits, a walk, and 4 Ks. Monarchs won the second game of a doubleheader, 10-2 after eight innings. Will Dagenhart scored three runs while earning two hits and an RBI in the win. Jacob Austin added two runs scored, two hits, and two RBIs while Ryan Hill got the complete game and the win on the mound.

Rutgers University-Camden was down to its last out, trailing by two runs in the top of the ninth inning and still looking for its first victory in the opening game of a doubleheader here Saturday. Two hits, a walk, an error and a wild pitch later, the Scarlet Raptors tied the game and they went on to pull out a 6-4, 11-inning win against 14th-ranked Kean University for their first win of the season. In the nightcap, the Raptors again rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth, but this time they lost, 6-5, on an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th inning.

No. 16 Shenandoah University ran its winning streak to 10 games Saturday by sweeping an ODAC baseball doubleheader from Virginia Wesleyan. Shenandoah (11-1, 8-0 ODAC) was a 16-3 victor in game one before rallying for a 7-6 win over the Marlins (2-12, 2-5) in the nightcap. The Hornets hit early and often in the 16-3 victory. SU had 18 hits in the contest, including at least one by eight of nine starters and 16 by the top six hitters in the lineup. Trailing 6-0 after VWU scored single runs in the first and third and two each in the fourth and fifth, Shenandoah rallied with two in the sixth, one each in the seventh and eighth, and three in the ninth.

No. 2 Washington University extended its winning streak to eleven games, with 7-1 and 7-6 wins over Wabash on Saturday. Senior pitcher Ryan Loutos earned his fourth win of the season with freshman Clayton Miller earning his second and senior Jared Fong adding a second save. Junior Caleb Durbin tallied a stolen base, two runs on three hits, including a double with fellow junior Tim Van Kirk recorded one run on three hits and three RBI.

The No. 5-ranked Webster squad split the first two games of its SLIAC four-game series with Spalding University at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. Webster opened Saturday's doubleheader by posting a 10-2 win in the first game, before the Golden Eagles would pick up a 5-2 win in the second game of the twinbill. For the doubleheader, Webster's offense collected a total of 20 hits and the 10 runs in the opener were the second most runs scored in a game this season as Webster scored 16 runs in the opener of its series last weekend at Blackburn. Four of those 20 hits came from graduate student All-American first baseman Kyler Kent was he was 4-for-10, while fourth-year junior All-American third baseman Ben Swords and fifth-year senior centerfielder Aron Hopp each had three hits and combined to score four runs. In the opener, graduate student All-American pitcher Matt Mulhearn continued his strong season on the mound as he pitched eight innings and allowed eight hits and two runs, while striking out nine and walking none to move to 5-0 on the season. Mulhearn has now recorded seven of more strikeouts in all five of his starts and he has not walked a batter in three of five starts.

No. 19 Centenary completed a three-game weekend sweep in SCAC action over the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Saturday with a pair of one-run wins to extend its winning streak to 14 games at Shehee Stadium. The Gents (20-2, 6-0 SCAC) took game one, 4-3, and then won game two by a score of 6-5. Centenary won 5-4 on Friday night to win all three games by one run. Schreiner fell to 7-13 overall and 1-5 SCAC with Saturday's sweep. Centenary continued its best start to a season in the division III era (2012-present) as the Maroon and White are one game ahead of the pace of the 2017 team that made the NCAA Tournament and was 19-3 after its first 22 games.
