You will have to forgive the Carleton College baseball players if they decide to no longer be fans of Hall of Famer Ernie Banks' famous phrase, "Let's play two!" For the seventh time this season, Carleton (10-21, 7-11 MIAC) won the opening game of a conference doubleheader. Each time the Knights have lost game two. In fact, Carleton dropped to 0-12 in the second game played on any given day this season with those dozen setbacks including five walk-off losses and two extra-inning defeats. That same script played out on Thursday as AJ Staff's three-hitter paved the way for Carleton to win game one by an 8-1 tally, only to see the Knights drop the second game 14-13. That result bounced Carleton from the postseason hunt because even if Carleton wins its last two games, the Knights will lose out on a tiebreaker.

As a light drizzle fell on Huntington Park, Heidelberg would add four more in the fifth. Head Coach Chad Fitzgerald began to sub in bench players, providing a chance for his graduates.

Sean Hoey's sensational starting pitching, Kainan Bayn's timely hitting, and Shane Hykin's clutch relief pitching propelled Hope College to a 2-1 victory against Trine University on Thursday. The Senior Day performance moved the Flying Dutchmen on the cusp of their 23rd MIAA championship overall and their first since 2013. Hope (24-8, 15-4 MIAA) leads second-place Kalamazoo College by 1 1/2 games heading into the final week of the regular season. The Flying Dutchmen can clinch at least a share of the regular-season title with one win during a doubleheader Trine, or one Kalamazoo loss during a three-game series against Adrian College. Hope can earn an outright title with either a sweep of Trine, one Hope win and one Kalamazoo loss, or two Kalamazoo losses. "We've got a special group. We've found ways to win," head coach Stu Fritz said. "We scratched two runs today. Sean unbelievable today. Al Money made a couple of key defensive plays at third. I can't be prouder of our team and where we're at and the position we've put ourselves in."
