BSC wins battle of top 5 teams

Sophomore right-hander Joey White fired 7.2 innings of shutout baseball to lead No. 4 Birmingham-Southern to a 3-0 win over No. 5 Trinity (Texas) in San Antonio on Friday. BSC opened up the season on the right foot starting 1-0, while Trinity, dropped to 0-1. White (1-0) blanked Towson for 7.2 innings, limiting its hitters to just a one hit while recording a single walk and three strikeouts. Second basemen Andrew Dutton led the Panthers' offensive effort with a two-hit, two-run game including the opening run of the 2023 season. Centerfielder Cam McNearney also recorded two-hits and scored the last of the Panther runs.

Scoring four runs in the first four innings combined with strong pitching, #24 East Texas Baptist on their season opener, 4-2, over Millikin. ETBU's pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts as Sayers Collins recorded eight as Trent Clark had two. Collins went five innings for the win allowing just three hits and no runs. Clark pitched the final two innings for the save also not allowing any runs. Five different players had one hit in the game as Jake Miller led the team with two RBI. "We haven't had much success in first games the past couple seasons but this one was awesome," said graduate student Jake Miller. "This was a good team win. We had some good at-bats and team play. Overall, it was just a good team win."

N.C. Wesleyan run ruled Bridgewater (Va.) on Friday afternoon 18-10. The Battling Bishops pulled away with a five-run third inning highlighted by a two-run dinger from Jackson Hobbs. Dylan Cheeley took back to the mound and was able to keep the Bridgewater offense somewhat in check for four solid innings after taking over midway through the second inning. Jackson Hobbs ended the day with eight RBI and three home runs to go along with six runs scored. In total, Hobbs accounted for 11 of the 17 NCWU runs scored. Cheeley picked up the win after hurling 4.0 complete innings of work along with four punchouts. Davis fanned six Eagles in 2.1 innings of relief, including striking out five straight batters.

the Celts won the game taking down the
Yellowjackets 7-5. Chris Parsons went five
innings without allowing a single run and
limited the Yellowjackets to just three hits
while fanning four batters.

Rhodes took on the Emory Eagles today in a highly anticipated matchup, winning 8-1. Senior starter Nick Ferazzi took the mound for the Lynx and tossed an exemplary four innings, allowing only one run on a solo HR in the second, while tallying eight strikeouts, one of which came on a blistering 96 mph fastball. The Rhodes pitching staff was absolutely dominant. After Ferazzi's 4 innings, Andy Hanaway, John Fears, Thomas Lemaster, and Brett Bokleman combined for 5 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits, and 6 strikeouts, keeping the Eagles to a lone run.

Concordia-Texas hosted George Fox, Hardin-Simmons and Pacific Lutheran for three days. In the tournament opener, Concordia-Texas defeated Pacific Lutheran 8-4. In the late game, ther Tornados were winners agin with a 10-8 victory over Hardin-Simmons. The George Fox Bruins put up four runs in the first three innings, while their pitching shut down Hardin-Simmons as Fox picked up their second win of the season. Noah Meffert went 3-4, scoring two runs while picking up the save; thanks to his performance, Meffet's batting average on the season now sits .438. Jeremy Sangalang had two extra-base knocks, going 2-4 with two RBIs, while Travis Miller went 6.0 innings and struck out four.

Kean rallied for a walk off win against Drew by the final of 8-7 on Friday evening. Drew added what looked like an insurance in the top of the ninth as Luis Fuentes found the hole in the left side, scoring KJ Hallgren from second with two outs for a two run lead, setting up the pivotal last chance for Kean. A hit by pitch put two on and Christian Pellone loaded the bases with an infield hit. Josh Jackson pushed across the first run of the inning with the tying run scoring on an error. Tyler Provost, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the top of the inning, chipped a 2-2 hit into short center just out of reach of the centerfielder who was only able to trap it for the walk-off win.

Centenary got its 2023 regular season off to a hot start despite cold conditions on Friday afternoon as the Diamond Gents recorded an 11-1 run-rule victory in seven innings over the University of the Ozarks Eagles in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at a soggy Shehee Stadium. Game two was suspended by rain in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Maroon and White leading 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning and is scheduled to resume at Noon on Saturday. Centenary (1-0) pounded out 13 hits and held the Eagles (0-1) to a single hit in game one to improve to 34-8 at home since the beginning of the 2021 season.

Millsaps scored a couple wins against LeTourneau to open the 2023 campaign. LeTourneau won the opener, 7-5, before prevailing in the nightcap, 5-2. The host Majors grabbed the lead for the final time in game one when the Majors were able to scratch across two runs in the seventh. RBI singles from Austin Arceneaux and Case Page made the difference. Will Cook (1-0) got the win on the bump for the Majors after throwing the final four innings and striking out seven. A three-run first inning for Millsaps propelled the Majors to a 5-2 win and a doubleheader sweep.

In a battle of unbeatens, Lewis & Clark stormed back from an 8-2 deficit after five innings, to earn an 11-9 comeback win over host Claremont-Mudd Scripps at Asuza Pacific on Friday afternoon. After being limited to three solo home runs in the first six innings, Lewis & Clark exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh and Tyler Shimabukuro and Anthony Clerici held off Stags rallies to earn the win. Lewis & Clark is 5-0 for the first time since 2004. With the win, the Pioneers snapped a five-game losing streak against CMS that dates back to 2018.

La Verne tied the game in the eighth inning, but Linfield got the last laugh in the ninth to even the series with a 9-8 victory Friday at Ben Hines Field. A four-run eighth inning for La Verne tied the game at 8-apiece. Jack Janes punched a bases-loaded pinch-hit single through the left side to get the rally started. That brought the Leopards back to their leadoff batter in Luke Garcia, who tied the game with a bases-clearing double. The 'Cats escaped with their first win of the series on Nick Holm's sacrifice fly in the ninth. The Leopards got the tying run to third base but couldn't cash him in. Bodey Smith turned in the only multi-hit game for the 'Cats while Holm finished with a team-leading two RBI.

In their season opener, the Hawks defeated Mississippi University for Women 15-2. With one out, the Hawks found a groove of getting on base with 8 hits for the first inning. Daniel Patton, Cade Morgan and Baron Brack all batted runners in to bring the score to 5-0. As MUW switched pitchers, Huntingdon began back at the start of their lineup where Kuba singled to bring in two more runners before the end of the inning (7-0). Adding runs in four of the next five inning, the Hawks cruised to the win. Sam Thompkins earned his first collegiate win for the Hawks from the circle pitching five innings and allowing one hit. Leading the offense was left fielder Daniel Phillips as he went 3-of-5 on the night scoring three runs and bringing in three base runners.

Jack Bickerton, Teague Conder, and Ben Parker combined to hit five home runs, Mateus Conaway threw five shutout innings, and Whitman opened their four-game road trip in Whittier, California with an 18-4 rout of the Poets on Friday afternoon. The six-run inning would be more than enough for Mateus Conaway (1-0) making his first start of the year. Conaway would keep the Poets off the board for the first five innings, needing only 58 pitches in the process. Conaway sat down the first eight men in the order before surrendering his first hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the third. Mateus would end up surrendering only one other hit on the day, surrendered no walks and struck out six Poets.

Sewanee scored in the first inning and never trailed as they won in the season opener with a 4-2 victory over Brescia Friday afternoon from Montgomery Field. The Tigers . Mac Gortney and Jack Roode each drove in an RBI. Blake Pou recorded a double in his first game with Sewanee. Matt Munn (1-0) posted seven strikeouts in five innings. Jake Nevle picked up his first save in his first-ever collegiate appearance on the mound with four shutout frames.

Piedmont and Cal Lutheran played to a 5-5 tie in eleven innings in a game that will resume on Saturday before the regular scheduled game.
