Stevens get sweep, Trinity finds win column

Hunter Dryden's pitching performance led Whitworth to a 5-2 win in the final game of a non-conference series against Corban on Sunday at Ron Tonkin Field. Dryden (2-0) allowed only one run on three hits in 6.2 dominant innings. He struck out nine Warriors.

Sophomore Zachary Boykin homered and drove in eight runs as Stevens swept a non-conference doubleheader with CCNY Sunday at Dobbelaar Field. Sophomore Liam DeRubertis homered and drove in a pair for the Ducks, who won the seven-inning opener 14-2 before topping the Beavers 13-2 in the nightcap. Stevens opens the season with a pair of victories for the third straight year. In addition to the offensive explosion, Stevens received strong pitching from senior Justin Doyle (1-0) and first-year Erik Sibbach (1-0). Doyle allowed an earned run on seven hits across 5 1-3 innings. The Louisville, Kentucky native walked one and struck out four. In his collegiate debut, Sibback was perhaps even better, scattering two hits across five scoreless frames with seven strikeouts to earn his first career victory. Jonathan Rivera homered and drove in two for City College, who dropped to 0-2. Stevens has won the last five, and 11 of the last 12, meetings between the programs. Interestingly, each of the 12 games between the teams since 2010 have taken place in Hoboken.

record setting triple from Andy Schmitz, as the Lutes
closed out its trip to the Lone Star State with a 9-3
thrashing of Texas Lutheran. In the eighth, Schmitz
belted his record shattering 12th career triple, scoring
Braeden Lundberg before a Barber sacrifice fly allowed
Schmitz to score, making it 9-3.

Redlands (3-2) handed Puget Sound their first loss of the season as starting pitcher Nathan Buchan threw six, two-run innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts as the Bulldogs got the 5-3 win. After throwing six innings, Buchan was replaced by Nate Helton who struck out three in 1.1 innings in the seventh and eighth. Jakob Russell then came in and got the five-out save with two strikeouts.

No. 5 Trinity (Texas) finished off a weekend series against fourth-ranked Birmingham-Southern College with a 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. Jackson Teer, a sophomore transfer who played at Texas A&M University-Kingsville last year, salvaged the series with a strong performance on the mound on Sunday. Teer allowed just one run on six hits over seven innings of work, striking out four batters without yielding a walk. Trinity took the early lead with all six runs scored in the first two innings and never looked back. The big blow came in the second inning as Nicholas Lazzara launched a three-run homer to right field. It was the second round-tripper in the past two games for the sophomore catcher, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in today's game.

After dropping their first game against Concordia Texas the day prior, George Fox stole nine bases and scored 12 runs on Sunday, winning, 12-6, to split the two-game series with the Tornados. The Bruins would have a huge inning in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits, the highlight a Evan Balingit double that scored two. Fox took a commanding 11-4 lead with just three at-bats left for Concordia. Concordia managed to score two in the eight, but nothing more. Fox added another run in the ninth for good measure, winning the game 12-6 as Spencer Johnson closed out the game in the ninth.

For the second consecutive Sunday, Lewis & Clark ended their weekend in the Golden State against Whittier. This time the Pios earned a comeback 11-8 victory over the host Poets. Senior Noah Ferruggia entered the game Sunday afternoon with two runners in scoring position and the Pioneers facing a 6-3 deficit in the fifth. He finished the day with four scoreless innings, two strikeouts, and two hits to earn his second win of the season. Sophomore Brennen Davis knocked a three-run homer to left field in the seventh to pull within 7-6, and junior Jakob Ghammachi homered to left center an inning later to give the Pioneers an 8-7 advantage.

Looking to rebound from a wild season-opening loss at the hands of SCAC foe Schreiner, McMurry gave the visiting Mountaineers all they could handle in both ends of the series finale doubleheader Sunday. Facing an early deficit in game one McMurry cut into Schreiner's lead in the second but from that point, McMurry's and Schreiner's pitchers locked up in a pitchers duel. McMurry two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but they were stranded to close out the 7-5 defeat. Game two started with Schreiner behind early but runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, with two crossing in the fifth gave them a 5-4 lead. McMurry got the potential tying tally in scoring position in their final at-bat but was thwartedas the Mountaineers secured the sweep.

Fontbonne opened its 2023 season with a sweep over University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy, 10-7 and 6-3. After the Eutectics opened with a 2-0 lead in the first in the opener, the Griffins answered in the bottom half with Trey Kueper bringing home two. From there Fontbonne would take control in the second, adding runs to match UHSP. Game two was the same as the Eutectics scored first and Fontbonne came back to tie and continue to add up runs for a second three-run victory.

 

Carl Lawson of Willamette hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie, and Steven Verespey pitched two scoreless innings to end the game, as the Bearcats defeated Pomona-Pitzer7-5, on Sunday. Willamette won the three-game series 2-1 and advanced its overall record to 4-2 on the season, with all six games on the road. The Sagehens fell to 4-2. Lawson was 2 for 5 at the plate with his two-run double. Layton Wagner also went 2 for 5 with a run and two RBIs. Ethan Fischel hit an RBI single to bring in the tying run two batters before Lawson's go-ahead hit. Fischel was 1 for 4 in the game with a walk and a run. Clint Walker, who scored the tying run on Fischel's single, was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and two walks.

The Occidental Tigers wrapped up the weekend series against the Whitman Blues at Anderson Field with a thriller for the final game of the weekend, 5-4. Pitching held strong throughout the course of the game for the Tigers, with Patrick Connolly making his second start of the season and allowing 2 earned runs through 4.1 innings and Jon Thoren throwing the last 4.2 innings in relief and allowing 2 earned runs. Down two runs in the 9th inning, the Blues got an early score, but the Tigers' defense once again came through and closed out the game. AJ Naha made two spectacular catches in right field in consecutive plays to take the Tigers to one out away from closing the game. Thoren struck out the next batter and sealed the game.
