No. 1's Webster, Moravian, Eastern open with losses

In the Moline regional, No. 1 Webster was sent to the elimination round as DePauw surprised the Gorloks with a 2-1 setback behind a complete-game effort from Jack Peck. In the Moosic Regional, top-seeded Moravian met the same fate, losing to Haverford 3-1. Tommy Bergjans threw a complete-game four-hitter and struck out 13 for the Fords.

Mitchell scored unearned runs in the 10th and 11th to knock off New England top-seeded Eastern Connecticut in its opener. The Warriors committed five errors, including one apiece in each extra inning as Mitchell won 4-3.

Emory picked up its first NCAA Tournament victory since the 2007 campaign, as the second-seeded Eagles defeated the fifth-seeded Rhodes Lynx 4-2 in Demorest, Georgia. Adrian finally found the recipe for success against Heidelberg, winning for the first time this season 8-1 in the Central Regional. The Student Princes are now 0-5 in May this year. Steve Zubrzycki scored three runs as Concordia-Chicago took their opener, 3-1, over UW-La Crosse.

St. Thomas scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat Rose-Hulman 4-2 and negate the Engineers' upset bid. Jon Ringblom scattered four hits in 7.2 innings and the Beaver offense pounded out 15 hits as Buena Vista defeated St. Scholastica 7-1, closing out the days action in the Central Regional.

Susquehanna used a four-run second inning to take early control of their game with Keystone and held off a ninth-inning comeback bid by the Giants to claim a 5-3 victory. In the late game in the Mid-Atlantic Regional, Rowan built a 7-0 lead and cruised to a 7-2 win over Wesleyan (Conn.). Chris Bernard had an RBI triple and a two-run homer to help the Southern Maine Huskies defeat the Worcester State University Lancers, 8-4, in the final game of the opening day of play in the New England Regional. Joe O'Connor delivered a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth to send Kean to a 5-4 win over Union in the New York Regional Tournament.

Chris Haddeland, the 2013 D3baseball.com Pitcher of the Year, threw a four-hit shutout and Linfield needed it all in a 1-0 win vs. LeTourneau to open the West Regional. Kramer Lindell supplied all the offense for the Wildcats with a fifth-inning homer. Shenandoah's story was different as they defeated Covenant 11-3 in the Demorest regional.

The top-seeded Hornets scored at least one run in four of the first five innings to take control of the game over the Scots and continued to apply pressure on the Covenant defense. UW-Whitewater and Marietta also put wins on the board. The Warhawks finished with a 6-2 final over St. Norbert and Marietta rolled over Penn State Berks 14-2. Cortland State had their hands full with a Castleton State that had its chances to tie the game multiple times in the middle innings but couldn't get the runs to balance the Red Dragon's offense. Cortland went on to defeat Castleton State 6-1.

The Widener Pride eaned the first win in the 2014 NCAA D-III playoffs with an 8-1 win over La Roche. Endicott followed with a win of its own, defeating NEWMAC champ MIT 6-4 in the Harwich regional. The Gulls got a go-ahead, two-RBI single to right by senior first baseman Brett Holmgren and 3 2/3 innings of solid relief from sophomore right-hander Davarn Nova as they rebounded from an early 2-0 deficit. Kyle Slinger spun a three-hit gem with nine strikeouts as he propelled Tufts to a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph's (Maine). The final game of the day found Case Western downing Thomas More 6-2. The Case-Thomas More game was delayed for several hours by lightning. This was a shorter delay than the rain that pushed the Bridgewater (Va.)- Birmingham-Southern game into Thursday.

Farmingdale State and Baldwin Wallace also earned opening wins. The Rams defeated Rutgers-Camden 4-2 and Baldwin Wallace gave Ryan Dorosh his first loss as a starter in his college career. Leading the Yellow Jackets to the 8-4 win were Brad Gugliotta and Kyle Chontos each with four hits in the opener.
