AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Edgewood College war riding high into Friday's doubleheader against St. Olaf College, coming off an 18-hit performance the day before and sporting a five-game winning streak. However, the Oles' pitching staff held the Eagles in check all afternoon and St. Olaf claimed a 2-1 win in eight innings in game one and a 5-2 victory in the second game for the sweep.

St. Olaf starter Ben Hughes baffled the Eagles' hitters in the opening game. Hughes struck out 12 Edgewood College batters in seven innings of work and carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning, holding on to a 1-0 lead. Scott Ortega delivered the Eagles first hit of the game to lead off the inning and moved to second on Jake Zadra's sacrifice bunt. Mike Selvaggi moved Ortega to third with a ground out, setting the stage for senior catcher Andrew King. King ripped a double, scoring Ortega and sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, St. Olaf College (6-0) took a 2-1 lead on a double by Andy Bartz. Erik Olson came on for the Oles in the bottom of the eighth and struck out all three Eagles hitters to end the game.

Edgewood College pitcher Blake O'Brien threw a strong game himself, but ended up with the loss. O'Brien pitched a complete game, giving up just six hits, one earned run while striking out eight batters.

Edgewood College (5-3) outhit the Oles in game two 7-5, but couldn't push enough runs across the plate. St. Olaf scored four runs, three of which were earned, in the first two innings off Eagle starter Glenn Nowell. Edgewood College cut the lead to 4-2 in the third inning. Ryan Walker singled with one out and eventually scored on a dropped fly ball hit by Zadra. Selvaggi then singled home Zadra, but the Eagles wouldn't score again.

Freshman Alex Jaskulski went 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles offense. Ortega extended his hitting streak to six games with a second inning single. Kyle Lode came in to pitch in relief and held St. Olaf College without a hit for the final two innings.

Edgewood College will wrap up their Florida trip on Saturday morning with a single game against Ramapo College (N.J.).
