MADISON, Wis. - It will certainly go down as an Edgewood College baseball home opener to forget. The Eagles had no answer for ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point as the Pointers ruined opening day at Stampfl Field with 14-4 and 19-1 victories. UW-Stevens Point racked up 34 hits in the two games and scored in 10 of the 14 innings played.

Edgewood College (5-6) fell behind by five runs in the first game before they got up to bat. The Pointers scored five runs on seven singles off starting pitcher James Bertakis to open the game. UW-Stevens Point (8-3) pushed across three more runs in the fourth, before the Eagles posted the strongest offensive inning of the day.

Ryan Walker, Jake Zadra and Mike Selvaggi led off the inning with consecutive singles to post the Eagles' first run of the day. Treye Dennison and Ryan O'Dell added RBI singles later in the inning and Mitch Mogensen drove in a run with an RBI groundout to cut the Pointers' lead to 8-4. However, UW-Stevens Point posted three more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the game away.

Bertakis suffered his first loss of the season, as four Eagle pitchers combined for seven hit batters and five walks. Walker was the only Eagle to pick up more than one hit in the first game, going 2-for-4. UW-Stevens Point pitcher Scott Williams threw a complete game victory, striking out eight and walking none.

The Pointers struck early again in the second game, scoring three runs in the first two innings, before blowing the game open with multiple runs in the fourth through seventh innings. Pointer left fielder led the attack, going 3-for-5 with five runs scored, two triples and five runs batted in. UWSP starter Joel Delorit improved to 2-0 on the year, throwing five innings and allowing just three hits and no earned runs.

Edgewood College's only run came in the sixth inning when Scott Ortega who had been hit by a pitch, scored on Zadra's RBI fielder's choice ground ball. Miles Mayer started the game for Edgewood College, lasting 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Of the 19 runs surrendered by the Eagles, just 13 were earned due to five Edgewood College errors. Walker again had two hits and was joined by Selvaggi who went 2-for-3 in the game. The 18-run margin of defeat tied the Eagles school record for their most lopsided loss. Edgewood College lost 26-8 to St. Cloud State (Minn.) on March 12, 1999.

Edgewood College will get two days to put the sweep behind them. The Eagles open their Northern Athletics Conference schedule on Saturday, with two games at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. Edgewood College will return home for a Sunday doubleheader with Aurora University.
