VERONA, Wis. - The Edgewood College baseball team's final home doubleheader of the season against UW-Platteville, served as a final tune-up for Saturday's Northern Athletics Conference showdown with Lakeland College. The Eagles out-hit the Pioneers by 10 in game one, but lost 5-4, before bouncing back for a 4-2 victory in the nightcap at Stampfl Field.

Edgewood College wasted an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Trevor Koehn in game one. After a rocky first inning, in which Koehn gave up three runs, he settled in and kept the Pioneers under control the rest of the game. UW-Platteville (9-28) went ahead 5-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning, but Koehn allowed his fourth and last hit in the game in the fourth inning. Koehn finished with a complete game loss striking out six batters.

Edgewood College (18-20) slowly closed the gap on the Pioneers one run at a time. The Eagles scored single runs in four different innings, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities for a big inning. Jake Zadra plated one run in the third with a sacrifice fly and followed Eric Curtis's first career triple with an RBI single in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-3.

In the eighth, Ryan Walker singled home pinch runner Casey Kula to trim the Pioneers' lead to one run, but the Eagles couldn't bring home the tying run after having first and second with one out.

Four Eagles, Ryan O'Dell, Treye Dennison, Alex Jaskulski and Curtis all had two hits apiece in the game. Edgewood College out-hit UW-Platteville 14-4 but couldn't get the win.

In the second game, Edgewood College employed a weapon they don't often use, the home run. Mike Selvaggi erased a 1-0 Pioneer lead with a two-run blast down the left field line in the bottom of the first inning. In the fifth inning, Zadra would lift a two-out solo home run over the left field wall to give Edgewood College a 3-1 lead. It was the second home run of the season for both Selvaggi and Zadra. In the sixth inning, Brandon Bartels executed a safety squeeze bunt with Kula on third base to give the Eagles an insurance run.

Things got dicey for the Eagles in the eighth, when both Zach Demmon and Griffin Wiley of UW-Platteville drew walks to open the inning. The Eagles turned to Jason Towns who sandwich two strikeouts around an RBI single by the Pioneers' Tyler Jacobson, and then induced an inning ending ground out. Towns closed out the ninth inning for his first save of the season and third of his career.

Miles Mayer was strong as the Eagles' starting pitcher going 6.1 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out five batters. Mayer improved to 2-3 on the season. Brock McGinn closed out the seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts with the bases loaded.

Edgewood College will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader at Lakeland College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles may have the chance to grab one of the two remaining NAC Tournament spots with a sweep of the Muskies, depending on the results of other contending teams.
