Yellow Jackets post impressive sweep of #18 Thomas More

More news about: Waynesburg

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (March 25) – Mike Humiston has seen a lot of impressive victories during his 15 years on the bench as an assistant and head coach with the Waynesburg University baseball team. However, Sunday's performance by the Yellow Jackets has to rank at or near the top of Humiston's highlight list. The Jackets more than avenged Saturday's nine-inning loss to the two-time defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champions from Thomas More by pounding out 32 hits and getting two outstanding efforts from their starting pitching as the visiting team swept the seven-inning doubleheader from the 18th-ranked Saints by the final scores of 12-0 and 9-2.

The Yellow Jackets (11-4, 2-1) got all of the offense they needed for the shutout victory in game one in the top of the first inning when junior first baseman Bobby Hartman's fielder's choice drove in senior third baseman Corey Goeggelman, who led the inning off with a double and was moved to third by senior catcher Brendan Scioscia, who put up a one-out single.

Waynesburg widened its lead in the second inning with a three spot of runs that put the visiting team up 4-0. Goeggelman, Scioscia and senior centerfielder Mike Neckerman notched an RBI each during the frame. Though the Jackets didn't score in the top of the third, they were far from done when it came to pushing runs across home plate.

The Orange and Black blew the game open in the fourth when Hartman blasted a two-run homer as part of a four-run frame that doubled Waynesburg's advantage to 8-0. Scioscia and junior shortstop Kyle Sasala added an RBI each in the inning. The Jackets' lead grew to double digits in the fifth win an RBI double by Sasala and a run-scoring sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Adam Horning.

Already up 10-0, the visiting team put the finishing touches on their game-one win with two final runs on the top of the seventh. Scioscia and senior left fielder Nick Berdine posted the final two RBI of the victory and brought about the final score of 12-0. Even though the Waynesburg bats cranked out a season-high 22 hits, the pitching of senior Ben Oviatt really stole the show as it shut down some of the most potent bats in the PAC.

Oviatt continued on an unbelievable senior season by allowing just four hits, all singles, and allowing just three Saint runners to reach scoring position. The veteran lefty is now 5-0 with five complete games in just five starts. He gave up just one walk in the masterpiece performance and racked up five strikeouts.

The Jacket bats cooled way off in game two, but another excellent starting pitching effort kept Waynesburg in contention until the offense got back on its feet. Thomas More (9-5, 1-2) actually took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but the visiting offense more than took care of business starting in the top of the fifth inning.

Still down a run, Waynesburg picked up three runs on two hits and two hit batsmen. The big blow of the frame came on a clutch two-out, two-run double by Scioscia. The Jackets led by just two runs going into the top of the sixth, where the visiting team pulled away for their second win of the day.

Five Waynesburg singles combined with a Thomas More error and a hit batsman to rack up six runs that allowed the Jackets to go ahead 9-1. Goeggelman got the first big hit of the inning with a two-run single. He was followed immediately be Scioscia, who wrapped up a monster day in Kentucky with a two-run single of his own. The Saints managed to pick up one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homerun, but that was as far as the home team came to pulling out a win.

After managing just three hits through the first four innings of the late game of the doubleheader, the Jackets piled up seven hits over the final three frames. Three of those hits came from Scioscia, who went three-for-four with a game-high four RBI and a run scored. Sasala, Goeggelman and Horning posted two hits each in the victory.

While sophomore Zach Kreke was unable to match the almost flawless performance of Oviatt in the first game, the second-year starter was still more than up to the task of stifling the potent Thomas More bats. Kreke scattered seven hits and a walk over his complete-game effort and yielded just one earned run on his way to victory.

Some of Waynesburg's final numbers from Sunday's doubleheader are truly impressive. Geoggelman paced the Jacket attack by going six-for-seven with a double, three RBI and four runs scored. Horning posted a five-for-seven effort with a double and four rusn scored. Scioscia drove in a team-high seven runs after going five-for-eight with two doubles and two runs scored. Freshman second baseman Joseph Smith hit .500 ( two-for-four) with three runs scored, while Sasala went four-for-nine with two doubles and a team-high five runs scored.

Waynesburg hit .457 as a team with a .614 slugging percentage and a .481 on-base percentage, while Oviatt and Kreke held the Saints to much more modest numbers (.212, .269, .241). The Jackets will try to carry the momentum from the sweep into Tuesday's road PAC doubleheader at Saint Vincent. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
