Macalester takes two from St. Olaf in MIAC opener

Macalester plated the game-winning walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a 9-2 and 7-6 sweep over St. Olaf in the MIAC opener at Nicholson Field.  After tying for last year's title, the Scots are off to a 2-0 conference start and with six wins in their last seven games, improve to 12-9 overall.

 

The Scots were down 6-0 after half an inning of the nightcap before battling back to tie the score at 6-6 with three runs in the first and fifth frames.

 

The Scots hit their first three home runs of the season in the opener off the bats of Robert Williams (Sr., West Covina, Calif. Northview), Nick Mar (Fy., Sacramento, Calif. / McClatchy) and Jimmy Belfont (Jr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel).

 

Williams homered again in nightcap and on the day was was 5-for-5 with five runs driven in and five runs scored.  Williams is hitting a sizzling .471 on the season with 23 RBI.  Mitch Glasser (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) went 5-for-7 with five runs scored in the twinbill, boosting his batting average to .362. 

 

Belfont and Garrett Salzman (Sr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) each collected three hits on the day.

 

Macalester ace Nick Meerson (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard –Westlake) improved to 5-0 on the season with another strong starting pitching performance in game one.  Meerson scattered seven hits and walked just one, and through 33 innings this year has a 3.00 ERA.  Mac scored five third-inning runs, getting back-to-back homers from Mar and Belfont.

 

Mac's game two comeback was supported by solid pitching from starter Nathan Keller-Crew (So., Cool, Calif. / Golden Sierra) and reliever Chase Kahn (So., Cooper City, Fla. / American Heritage Plantation).

 

After Williams and Salzman singled, Mar walked to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh.  Belfont's liner to left scored pinch-runner Scott Foltz (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) from third with the game-winner.

 

The Scots return to MIAC action Wednesday (April 4) when they host Gustavus at 2:30 p.m.
