Aurora sweeps past Edgewood College

AURORA, Ill. – Aurora University used a big inning to finish off both halves of a doubleheader sweep against Edgewood College on Monday afternoon. The Spartans, the Northern Athletics Conference preseason favorite, won both games by identical scores of 12-2.

Edgewood College (7-13, 4-4 NAC) opened the first game of the day with a run in the first inning. Mike Selvaggi drove home Ryan Walker with a single to put the Eagles on top, but their lead would be short-lived. Aurora University (18-4, 7-1 NAC) scored a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to seize control of the game. In the seventh, Walker singled and Jake Thome scored when the Spartans right fielder misplayed the ball to cut the Spartans lead to 5-2. However, scored seven runs in the eighth inning, including three on a Mike Foley home run to end the game by virtue of the 10-run rule.

Walker, Jake Zadra and Alex Jaskulski each had two hits to lead the Eagles. Jaskulski has now reached base in 14 straight games. Starting pitcher Casey Geissberger suffered the loss pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on five hits.

Aurora opened up a 4-0 lead after two innings in the second game, before Edgewood College got on the board. Zadra and Ryan O'Dell hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to cut the Spartans' lead in half at 4-2. Aurora added two runs in the sixth before exploding for six unearned runs in the seventh.

Eight different players each had a hit for the Eagles, including Walker who extended his hitting streak to nine straight games. Brad Clark lasted six innings for Edgewood College, allowing six earned runs on eight hits.

Edgewood College will be home again next Saturday against Marian University for a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader. Both games can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
