Edgewood College can't contain Pointers offense

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point pounded out nine doubles in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Edgewood College. The 16th-ranked Pointers defeated the Eagles 10-3 in the first game and 15-6 in the second game.

UW-Stevens Point (20-8) jumped out to a 9-0 lead in game one on the strength of a seven run fourth inning. Edgewood College (9-17) responded with single runs in three straight innings. Pat Manning got the Eagles on the board in the sixth, scoring on an errant pickoff throw from winning pitcher Jacob Herbst. In the seventh, Alex Jaskulski walked and advanced to second on an Eric Curtis single. With Jake Thome at the plate Jaskulski stole third and then scored when the throw from the Pointers' catcher sailed into the outfield. Mike Selvaggi added an RBI double in the eighth inning scoring Ryan O'Dell all the way from first base.

Ryan Walker had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games. Jaskulski also had two hits and a stolen base. Casey Geissberger started on the mound for the Eagles and took the loss, going three innings and striking out one.

In the second game, the Pointers jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Eagles answered in the fourth inning. The first six Eagle batters reached base in a five run inning. Selvaggi and Ben Jennings had RBI singles, while Brandon Bartels brought home a run with a bases loaded walk. Otto Muehlenberg brought home a run with an RBI groundout and Walker completed the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Eagles added another run in the following inning when Jaskulski hit a leadoff double and Selvaggi singled him home. However, the Pointers poured on six runs on six hits in the bottom half of the fifth inning to open up a 14-6 lead.

Jaskulski went 2-for-3 with a double and Selvaggi went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in for the Eagles. Walker had his hitting streak snapped, but stole his team leading eighth base of the season. Marc Ostrowski started on the hill for the Eagles and suffered his second loss of the year.

Edgewood College plays four critical Northern Athletics Conference games this weekend. The Eagles will play a pair against Dominican University in Schaumburg, Ill. before returning home for a Sunday Stampfl Field doubleheader with MSOE. All four games can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
