SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Giving up five runs in the first inning isn't the typical way to start a doubleheader sweep, but it worked out for the Edgewood College baseball team on Saturday. The Eagles shook off their slow start to come from behind for an 8-5 victory in game one, and then carried their momentum through a 7-6, 11 inning victory in the second game. The wins pushed the Eagles all the way up to a fifth place tie in the Northern Athletics Conference.

Dominican University (14-17, 5-9 NAC) jumped all over Edgewood College starting pitcher Miles Mayer for five runs on five hits in the first inning of game one. However, Mayer refused to fold and limited the Stars to just two base hits, a leadoff single in the fifth inning and a two-out double in the ninth inning, the rest of the way. Mayer improved to 2-3 on the season, striking out four batters.

The Eagles started to get back in the game with an RBI single by Brad Clark in the third, and then exploded in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate and piled up six runs on eight hits. Five of the first six batters of the inning singled, with the lone exception being Alex Jaskulski who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Ryan O'Dell put the Eagles ahead for good with a two-run double to give Edgewood College a 6-5 lead. Jaskulski picked up another RBI in the sixth with a bunt single to bring home Ryan Walker.

Clark had matched his season-high with three hits in five at-bats. Jaskulski went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Jake Zadra and Jake Thome also had two hits apiece.

The Stars also got the jump in game two, picking up two runs in the second off Eagle starting pitcher Trevor Koehn. Edgewood College (11-17, 8-6 NAC) answered immediately with a pair of runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Clark and Mike Selvaggi drove in runs in the third, with Clark adding another RBI hit in the fourth. Jaskulski brought home the other run in the fourth on a squeeze bunt to score Eric Curtis. Thome hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and the Stars helped out when an errant throw on an attempt to turn a double play allowed O'Dell to score.

Dominican cut the lead to 6-4 in the seventh, and the manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth. Lenny Cunzalo knotted the game at six with a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the top of the 11th inning, Clark led off with a single and moved to second on Jaskulski sacrifice bunt. From there Selvaggi drove a single into left field to score Clark for the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the 11th, the Stars' Richie Green singled with one out, but Eagle catcher Sean Thompson cut him down trying to steal second to allow relief pitcher Joe Gura to close out the game. Thompson also threw out a base stealer in the 10th inning to extend the game.

Clark went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs to give him six base hits on the day. Selvaggi went 2-for-6 with two runs batted in of his own. Zadra also added two hits. Koehn went nine innings, limiting the Stars to four earned runs and striking out six batter. Gura pitched the final two innings to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Edgewood College will return to Stampfl Field on Sunday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader with MSOE. Both games between the Eagles and the Raiders can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
