Strong Pitching Downs Beavers in DH

YAPHANK, N.Y. – Mike Smith hit his third home run of the season and finished 2-for-4 in game one at Baseball Heaven against Baruch College but the strong pitching of the Baruch College staff allowed the Bearcats (7-8, 4-0 CUNYAC) to sweep Saturday's doubleheader over the Beavers (3-14, 1-5 CUNYAC), 7-3 and 9-0, respectively.

Felice Martino and Brian Collado pitched well but could not get enough run support in both contests.

Game One

A shot by Smith and Martino's 5.0 innings of six-hit baseball were showcased but the Bearcats got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and not looking back, downing the Beavers 7-3 in game one.

Martino (1-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs – two earned – in 5.2 innings while Paul Perez (2-2) improved to 2-2 on the year after striking out seven in 7.0 innings.

Emmanuel Nwokelo added two hits in four at-bats to extend his hitting streak to nine games and his multiple hits streak to seven games.

After the Bearcats took a 3-0 lead in the opening frame, the Beavers got a run up on the scoreboard when Smith hit a solo shot to lead off the second inning. Nwokelo followed with a single and later came around to score on a Matt Sola-Baker single to cut their deficit to 3-2.

Two errors led to Baruch adding two runs in the third before CCNY's Eric Quatrone drew a bases loaded walk as City College now trailed 5-3. That would be all the Beavers would get as the Bearcats added insurance runs late in the contest to take game one 7-3.

Game Two

A seven-run sixth inning allowed the Bearcats to run away with the contest as Baruch College blanked the Beavers on a shutout by Joseph Cali, who needed just 55 pitches to shut the door.

Collado (1-2) struck out five in 5.2 innings but picked up his second loss of the season while Cali (2-0) improved to 2-0 on the year with his complete game.

CCNY hosts Mount St. Mary's College on Monday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m. at Salesian High School in New Rochelle.
