Keystone Defeats Kean to Force Championship Game on Sunday Behind One-Hitter by Rogers

Moosic, PA – Rob Rogers (Islip, NY/Islip) hurled a complete game, one-hit shutout to lead Keystone College to a 2-0 win over Kean College at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Saturday afternoon at PNC Field.  With the win, the Giants improve to 37-9 and force a winner-take-all championship game against the Cougars (37-11) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with a trip to the NCAA Division III College World Series next week in Appleton, Wisconsin on the line.

A day after teammate Patrick Robinson (Goshen, NY/Goshen) allowed just two hits in a loss to the top-seeded and ninth-ranked Cougars, Rogers' one-hitter gave Keystone their first-ever win over Kean, who entered the game 16-0 all-time against the Giants including a 1-0 win during the regular season and a 4-2 victory on Friday in winner's bracket play.

Fresh off a thrilling, 6-5, 11-inning walkoff win earlier in the day, second-seeded Keystone jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Kean on Saturday.  Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) led off the inning by reaching on an error before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius).  After Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) walked, Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) singled to center to bring home Catherina with the game's first run.

Catherina hit a one-out double down the right field line in the visitor's fifth, but was stranded there as Kean starter Dan Hansen got a groundout followed by a strikeout to leave the runner in scoring position

Rogers retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing back-to-back walks to Joe O'Connor and Salvatore Taormina.  With O'Connor attempting to steal third, the throw from the Giants' catcher went into left field where Gurman back up the errant throw well and trapped O'Connor in a rundown where he was tagged out, and Rogers recorded the final out of the inning on a strikeout to work out of the inning.

Rogers gave up his first hit of the game with one out in the sixth inning, a single to center by Matt Meleo.  After a fielder's choice, Tyler Smarslok walked to give the Cougars a pair of runners, but Rogers again worked out of potential trouble by recording an inning-ending strikeout.

Rogers retired the side in order in both the seventh and eighth innings before Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) added an insurance run for the Giants in the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run into the Keystone bullpen in left center.

That was more than enough for Rogers, who again retired the side in order in the ninth to complete the perfect game shutout while retiring the final 13 batters he faced.  The senior right hander improved to 10-2 on the season with the win after allowing just a single while walking three and striking out seven batters on the day throwing just 104 pitches on the day.

Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had two hits on the day to lead Keystone's offense.

Hansen, who has pitched primarily as a reliever this season, was a hard-luck loser for Kean after tossing his first-ever complete game and surrendering one earned run on just six hits and two walks while striking out three on the day.

First pitch of Sunday's game between Keystone and Kean is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at PNC Field.  The Cougars will be the home team for the contest.
