Rams Fall to Top-Seeded Cortland After Rain Delay

Newark, N.Y. - After rain forced a suspension of play on Thursday, the Rams fell, 14-5, to top-seeded Cortland when the game was continued this afternoon.

In the top of the first, the Red Dragons (33-8) took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, Conn.) which scored junior second baseman Mark DeMilio (Valhala, N.Y.). A Max Rosing (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) RBI single up the middle increased the advantage to 2-0, before Cortland added a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a balk to take a 4-0 lead.

The Red Dragons extended their lead to 5-0 in the third on a Rinaldi RBI single after senior third baseman Anthony Iacomini (South Salem, N.Y.) led off the inning with a triple.

In the top of the fifth, Cortland plated five more runs to open up a 10-0 advantage.

After the first three batters reached base for Farmingdale State (26-12) in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI groundout by junior third baseman Mike Scarlato (Holbrook, N.Y.) put the Rams on the board. A Ryan Levine (West Babylon, N.Y.) pinch hit single to right scored Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Michael Marino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 10-3. Senior first baseman Sal Sanquini (Levittown, N.Y.) and senior right fielder Edward Bergmann (East Meadow, N.Y.) each added RBI singles to pull Farmingdale State within five, 10-5.

After the game was resumed in the seventh inning, the Red Dragons added a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to earn the 14-5 victory.

The Rams were led by Rydzewski who was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Levine had one hit with a pair of RBI.

Rinaldi was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a game-high five runs batted in for Cortland. DeMilio had three hits, two runs and an RBI, while Rosing was 2-for-5 with a run and 3 RBI. Sophomore pitcher Brandon Serio (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) earned the win after throwing six innings and allowing three earned runs.

Farmingdale State will now face #6 Stevens in an elimination game on Saturday, May 17th at 10:00 a.m.
