Errors Hinder Spartans in Pair of Losses

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Spartan centerfielder Daniel Casanova tripled and homered in the University of Dubuque baseball team's shootout loss to University of Minnesota-Morris, 13-10, on Sunday.

The Spartans surrendered 19 hits in 42 at-bats to UM-Morris (4-5) as the Cougars scored in five of the first six innings aided by a plethora of errors. 


Casanova's first home run of the season countered a Cougar attack that posted two runs in the top of the first. UD trailed 3-2 through the first two innings until the Cougars plated seven unanswered runs over innings four through six. Seven errors doomed the Spartans as six of UM-Morris' first 10 runs were unearned.

UD starter Doug Van Dyke (1-1) gave up six hits, five runs (one earned), and three walks in 3.0 innings of work. 

Casanova led a productive day at the dish as the Spartans (3-3) collected 14 hits total. The starting centerfielder finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI while PH/LF Trace Florek and 2B Will Fogel each totaled two hits and two runs a piece. LF/RF Jacob Evans paced the Spartans with three hits and SS Ryan Karrick added a team-high three RBIs.

The Cougars' C Chandler Erickson nabbed three hits, one run, and four RBIs to lead UM-Morris.
