Rams Fall to Old Westbury in Skyline Baseball Playoffs

#2 Old Westbury - 2, #3 Farmingdale State - 1


Patchogue, N.Y. - The third-seeded Farmingdale State baseball team fell, 2-1, to #2 Old Westbury in the first game of the Skyline Conference playoffs today at St. Joseph's College. The Rams will now face #4 Maritime tomorrow in the double-elimination tournament.

Sophomore third baseman Michael Cardino (Massapequa, N.Y.) led off the third inning for Old Westbury (23-8) with a triple to right center. After a pair of groundouts and a walk, senior center fielder Jonathan Pagan (Westbury, N.Y.) hit a bases clearing double to left to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, senior shortstop Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.) hit a one-out single to right and advanced to second on an Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) single to left field. In Farmingdale State's (16-16) next at-bat, senior right fielder Michael Marino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) hit an RBI single through the right side to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Rams were unable to score the game-tying run in any of the last three innings as they fell, 2-1. Farmingdale State held Old Westbury to only three hits in the game.

Alvino finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while sophomore third baseman Nick Osburn (East Islip, N.Y.) had two hits in three at-bats.

Old Westbury's Tim Ingram (Westbury, N.Y.) improved to 7-2 on the season after tossing a complete game allowing one run on seven hits and striking out seven.

Farmingdale State will play #4 Maritime in an elimination game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
