Edgewood College battles through rain to beat Thunder

CAROL STREAM, Ill. – The Edgewood College baseball team found their winning touch again on a cold, rainy Wednesday night. The Eagles collected 11 hits and held Wheaton College without an earned run in a 9-1 victory, in a game that was rescheduled from Saturday due to weather.

Edgewood College (8-4) was the early beneficiary of some shaky defense by the Thunder defense. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, when Jonathan Roehler singled to score Alex Fowler and Jeff Tucker followed him home on a throwing error. The Eagles' big inning arrived in the third when Edgewood College scored five runs on three Wheaton College (11-6) errors. Paul Capetta had an RBI single and Nick Lehner brought in a run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch.

Wheaton College scored their only run in the sixth, but the Eagles added some insurance in the next two innings. Tim Nunn was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning and rounded the bases on three wild pitches. In the eighth, Roehler singled and scored from first on Lehner's RBI double.

On the mound, Jeff Wolf gave the Eagles three solid innings to start the game, facing the minimum nine hitters and only allowing one baserunner. Blake BieriMitch EganJared HortonSteve Gavin and Danny Appino combined to hold Wheaton to five hits and one unearned run over the final six innings. In all, Eagles pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and just four walks.

Tucker, Appino, Roehler and Fowler each had two hits in the game. Lehner led the team with two RBIs including a double. Appino stole his seventh base of the season, which gave the Eagles at least one stolen base in each game this season.

Edgewood College will begin the 2017 NACC season at home this Saturday. The Eagles will take on Rockford University in a doubleheader at Stampfl Field beginning at 12:00 p.m.
