Offense Leads Rams in Two Wins Against Lehman

Farmingdale, N.Y. - In a pair of non-conference 7-inning baseball games this afternoon, Farmingdale State won both against Lehman. The Rams registered 20 hits in the 14-4 game one victory and followed with nine hits in the 5-3 game two win.

After falling behind 2-0, FSC (11-10) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single up the middle by freshman left fielder Vincent Rice (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). In the next at-bat, a Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) RBI single through the right side evened the score at 2-2. Three batters later, the Rams took a 4-2 edge on a 2 RBI single up the middle from junior shortstop Nicholas Soriano (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).

In the bottom of the second, freshman center fielder Cam Alfano (Yaphank, N.Y.) led off with a walk and later scored on a Nick Attardi (Smithtown, N.Y.) RBI single. Farmingdale State added RBI's by McCarthy, Tyler Schrimpf (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Domenic Palumbo (Plainview, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 8-2. 

Leading 9-2 in the bottom of the fourth, FSC went on top 11-2 after a 2 RBI bases clearing triple to left center by freshman catcher Anthony Sirianni (Sayville, N.Y.) scored Palumbo and Nick LaSala (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). The final run of the inning came on a Ryan Osborne (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) RBI groundout to shortstop.

FSC plated a run in each of the final two innings for the 14-4 game one victory. The Rams scored a least one run in every inning.

Rice was 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, while Schrimpf was 3-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Soriano finished with three hits, a run scored and a game-high four runs batted in. Junior Brandon Ernest (Owings, Md.), who pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts, earned the win.

The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead in game two on an RBI double to right center by junior first baseman Christopher Reilly (Levittown, N.Y.). Soriano followed with an RBI single to center to score Reilly and put FSC ahead, 2-0.

After adding a run in the second, Farmingdale State went up by four on a third inning Schrimpf RBI single to center.

In the sixth, Lehman (5-11) scored three to close within one, 4-3, but the Rams plated the final run of the game in the bottom half of the inning to cap off the non-conference sweep.

McCarthy, Reilly and Ernest each tallied two hits for FSC. Freshman pitcher Nicholas Rooney (Ridge, N.Y.) (1-2) picked up his first career win after allowing three runs in 2.1 innings of relief. Sophomore Ryan Mallon (Deer Park, N.Y.) retired all five batters he faced to close out the game and record his third save of the season.

Farmingdale State next will play host to Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 8th at noon.
