Farmingdale, N.Y. - In the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, trailing 4-3 with two on and one out, sophomore Anthony Gigante (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) hit a walk-off triple to the left center field gap to seal the Rams eighth Skyline Conference victory of the season, 5-4.
The Rams (13-10) improved to 8-2 in conference play with today's two wins, 7-1 and 5-4, while the Dolphins (6-14) dropped to 2-4 in the Skyline.
In the first inning, following a 1-2-3 top of the first for sophomore pitcher Joe D'Arco (Plainview, N.Y.), the Rams got on the board after a double-steal attempt allowed freshman center fielder Cam Alfano (Yaphank, N.Y.) to score.
After Mount Saint Vincent loaded the bases in the top of the third inning with two outs, Farmingdale State junior pitcher Ryan O'Connor (Babylon, N.Y.) came on in relief to force a foul out to third base to escape the jam.
Leading 2-0 with a runner on second base in bottom of the third, FSC senior first baseman Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run to right field to increase the advantage to 4-0.
The teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when junior shortstop Nicholas Soriano (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), junior second baseman Domenic Palumbo (Plainview, N.Y.) and Gigante tallied three staright singles to score a run and increase the lead to 5-0. An RBI groundout by freshman catcher Anthony Sirianni (Sayville, N.Y.) later in the inning brought the advantage to 6-0.
FSC scored their seventh and final run of the game in the seventh inning as Gigante singled to bring home Palumbo.
O'Connor (2-1) earned the game one victory as he only allowed five hits and one run in 6.1 innings of releif.
Alfano, freshman left fielder Vincent Rice (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), McCarthy, Soriano, Palumbo and Gigante each finished with two hits apiece and combined to score all seven Farmingdale State runs.
Junior right fielder Honorio Pena (New York, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 in the loss for the Dolphins.
Leading 1-0 in the third inning of game two, after a McCarthy RBI triple in the first, Rice and junior designated hitter Christopher Reilly (Levittown, N.Y.) each tallied RBI singles to left field to increase the lead to 3-0.
In the seventh inning, the Dolphins rallied and scored four runs while down to their final out of the game to take the lead, 4-3. With runners on first and second, a base hit by pinch hitter Kyle Tamburi (Martinsville, N.J.) cut the deficit to 3-1. Following a run-scoring error, freshman left fielder Zachary Saunders (Suffern, N.Y.) hit a two-run triple over the center fielders head to take the 4-3 advantage.
Junior right fielder Brandon Ernest (Owings, MD) led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk. After a groundout moved Ernest to second base, the Dolphins intentionally walked McCarthy to set up the game-winning two-run triple by Gigante.
FSC sophomore Kenneth Simco (Calverton, N.Y.) (1-1) pitched 5.1 innings in relief, while only allowing three hits and no earned runs, to record the win.
Sophomore center fielder Nick Attardi (Smithtwon, N.Y.) finished with two hits and two runs scored, while McCarthy was 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.
Mount Saint Vincent was led by Saunders' one hit and 2 RBI's.
Farmingdale State next hosts another Skyline opponent, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, for a doubleheader tomorrow, April 9th at 12:00 p.m. on Senior Day. The Senior Day ceremony will begin at approximately 11:45 a.m.
