Hampden-Sydney Falls To Visiting (RV)Randolph-Macon 8-3

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) had one hit and one RBI, while sophomore Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) had one hit and one run, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 8-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision at home to (RV)Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore Sterling Austin (Petersburg) took the pitching setback for the host Tigers (11-15, 5-11) against the visiting Yellow Jackets (19-7, 11-3).

H-SC scored three runs on five hits with one error … scoring one run in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh. RMC, receiving votes in this week's D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25, scored eight runs on 11 hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, four runs in the fourth, one run in the sixth and two runs in the eighth.

In the sixth, senior Julian Franks-Pollock (Virginia Beach) reached on a throwing error and advanced to second base as the lead-off batter. He later stole third with one out and then scored courtesy of a wild pitch to make it 6-1.

In the seventh, junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) led off with a walk and moved to second base on a single to center field by Farr (1-4), before a pair of wild pitches allowed him to cross the plate. Farr advanced to second base on the second wild pitch, and moved to third on yet another wild pitch, scoring on an RBI single to left field by Butler (1-3, RBI) with one out to make it 6-3 toward the final margin.

Juniors Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-2) and Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-4), along with freshman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-3), each added a hit on the day for the Garnet & Grey.

Austin (1-3) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, all earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Junior Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) followed with 3.0 innings, yielding two hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Hank Blanton (Midlothian) recorded one out, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Classmate Ty Herndon (Richmond) faced two batters and allowed two hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
