Chen Helps Seniors Join Century Club for RMC Baseball in Win at H-SC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Sophomore Nathan Chen (South Riding, Va./Freedom) was a triple short of the cycle with three hits and three runs as the Randolph-Macon baseball team won 8-3 at Hampden-Sydney in ODAC action on Tuesday afternoon to give the Yellow Jacket seniors their 100th career victory.

How It Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Chen had a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout by freshman Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
  • Senior Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) started and tossed three scoreless innings with one hit, no walks and four strikeouts. He struck out the side in the second.
  • RMC added to its lead in the fourth. Freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) drew a one-out walk, went to second on a single by Chen and scored on a base hit by Bowles as the advantage moved to 2-0. Bush singled to knock in Chen, making it 3-0. Following a groundout, freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) singled to plate Bush and Bowles, giving RMC a 5-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Colin Casey (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) pitched two hitless innings in the fourth and fifth with one strikeout to pick up the win and raise his record to 2-1.
  • Chen homered to lead off the sixth, his first collegiate dinger, as the Yellow Jackets led 6-0.
  • The Tigers tallied one in the sixth and two in the seventh to pull within three, but RMC answered in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a one-out single and Quici drew a walk. Sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) doubled to drive in both runners as the advantage grew to 8-3.
  • Sophomore William Wian (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) worked the final two frames with no hits and four strikeouts.
