Teams keep it close on Thursday

Senior Brendan Garry singled home teammate Matt Todd in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Rochester to a 3-2 extra inning victory over #9 Emory at the UAA Baseball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Sanford Memorial Stadium.  In other UAA action, Washington (Mo.) rallied for a 6-3 win over Brandeis, and Case Western defeated NYU 13-12.

La Roche scored 10 unanswered runs to get past St. Scholastica 12-7 and take two of the three games this week. The Red Hawks staff ace, Tyler Ferguson, ran into early trouble but his offense picked him up as he earned the win.

Beating its third ranked team in four days, Webster downed #10 UW-Stevens Point, 3-2, in 11 innings at Auburndale, Fla. The Gorloks utilized a stellar long relief effort from game winner Chris Jansen, and a most unusual double play to save the game in the 11th. Since dropping out of the top 25 in this week's d3baseball.com poll, the Gorloks have knocked off the #10, #14 (Rhodes),  and #16 (Marietta) ranked schools in a four day span.

A sacrifice fly by Conner Gobright in the top of the tenth inning proved to be the game-winner as Wesley defeated CAC rival St. Mary's, 9-8, at the Hawk's Nest. Junior newcomer KeAndre Jones led off the extra frame with a double to the gap in left center and advanced ninety feet away following a balk. Gobright then made Wesley a winner with a deep fly ball to dead center which was far enough to score Jones from third.

No. 16 Marietta used three big scoring innings as the Pioneers doubled up Montclair State 10-5 at the Snowbird Classic. Tommy Crowl pitched seven innings while Ryan Hanahan and Chris Winpigler each drove in two runs for Marietta, which evened its record at 3-3.

Senior Nate Meiners went 4-for-5 with a double, one run and one RBI to lead the 22nd-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team past New Paltz 7-1 at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park. Six R-MC pitchers combined to hold the Hawks to six hits and one unearned run. Starter Nic Phelps recorded the win, allowing three hits, no runs and no walks in two innings with one strikeout.

Wesley Burghardt hammers a three-run homer to lead Brockport State past Dickinson with a doubleheader sweep.

Senior Wesley Burghardt was 2-for-2 in game one and then smashed a three-run home run in game two leading Brockport State to a doubleheader sweep of Dickinson as the Golden Eagles opened the 2015 Spring Training trip to Florida with a pair of wins. Brockport won the opener 12-5 scoring six runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth and then had to come from behind in the second game as Burghardt delivered a three-run homer to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning. Brockport went on to post a 5-4 win.

Enjoying the program's best start in recent history, 25th-ranked Frostburg State pounded out a season-high 18 hits as the Bobcats rolled to their 10th straight win, a 19-10 CAC victory over Southern Virginia. Eight of the nine starters collected at least one hit for the Bobcats including seniors Kam Stewart and Ricky Brady who had three apiece. Stewart went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored while Brady was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and three runs.

Paul McDonough hit a two-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give the 8th-ranked Southern Maine Huskies a 3-1 victory over the Roger Williams Hawks in the first game of a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Field. In the second game, the Huskies scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to erase a two-run deficit and take a 6-2 victory over the Hawks to complete the sweep.  The sweep gives the Huskies a four-game winning streak to start the season.

In the second extra inning game in the past three days, Ithaca came away with its first victory of the season with an 11-9 victory at Occidental in 12 innings. The 11 runs scored on Thursday matched the Bombers' season total and their 13 hits are the most through five games.

Caltech earned their first sweep since 2000 with a pair of one run wins over Drew. The Beavers scored five in the fifth inning for a four run lead and held on for the 11-10 win. In Game two, Caltech fell behind after the visiting half of the first, and then the second innings. A four run outburst was enough to put the score in favor of the Beavers. Neither team could score in the later innings and with a 8-7 win, Caltech had their historic sweep.

Six of the Pioneers' 11 hits were for extra bases as William Paterson earned a 10-6 victory at Baruch at MCU Park. K.C. Abel finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored, while Mike Knauf went 2-for-5, adding a double, two RBI and a run.

Hood improved to 3-1 on the season, defeating Penn State Berks in a pitchers' duel before outslugging Valley Forge. Jake Franke was almost flawless in his college debut, as Hood picked up its second win with a 2-1 victory over Penn St.-Berks in their first game if the day. In game two Hood batted around in the first inning and never looked back to take out Valley Forge 17-7.

Donny Castaldo, Seth Lamando, and Justin Teaguer combined for eight hits and nine RBI as nationally third-ranked Cortland improved to 5-0 with a 12-4 victory at North Carolina Wesleyan. Lamando finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, three of which came on a three-run homer during a four-run top of the first inning. Castaldo went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Teague finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Averett defeated Marymount 11-4 at Owen-Fulton Field, picking up its fourth win in its last five games. Senior left-hander Timothy Coston was solid on the hill for Averett, scattering five hits, while striking out four in five innings of work.

Rockford returned to the field Thursday afternoon after having an off day on Wednesday and the rust showed in a 7-3 loss to Wooster.  Game two was a different story as Rockford ace Michael Murray was in command in a 7-1 win over Millikin. Cole Logemann had the big hit with a fourth inning grand slam home run to put the Regents up 5-1.

Dominican blanked Emerson, 4-0, at the 2015 Gene Cusic Classic. Cody Mueller got his second win in three days for the Stars on the mound.  Mueller struck out ten hitters on the day, giving up five hits and five walks. The senior right-hander also picked off a runner in the first. Mueller is now 2-0 on the season and has yet to surrender an earned run in over ten innings of work.

Keystone opened up the 2015 season with a pair of victories as the Giants kicked off their spring break trip in Florida by outscoring their opponents 16-2 on the day. Keystone won their season-opener 9-2 over Olivet before shutting out Minnesota Morris in their second game of the day, 7-0. The two wins matches the Giant's win total in the first ten games of the 2014 season.

Gallaudet opened an early lead but that quickly evaporated as McDaniel scored 17 unanswered runs en route to a 14-run victory in a non-conference game at Hoy Field. McDaniel took the lead in the fourth when they score eight runs on three hits and four walks. Gallaudet assisted the run total with three errors in the inning.

Saint Joseph's (Maine) split a pair of games with Westfield State in RussMatt Central Florida Invitational baseball action. The Monks suffered a walk-off 4-3 setback in the opener and closed out the Florida trip with a 9-4 victory over the Owls.
