No. 7 Johns Hopkins hit seven home runs, three by Alex Darwiche as the Blue Jays defeated Gwynedd-Mercy 19-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Darwiche was perfect at and behind the plate. The Blue Jay's catcher was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and six RBIs.

The St. Scholastica opened the 2018 season by sweeping a doubleheader from Macalester at U.S. Bank Stadium. In 10-0 game one win, Steven Neutzling finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Drew Colvard was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. While the offense was doing its thing, Grant Rindal allowed only one hit and two base runners in five innings of work to earn the win. Rindal had five strikeouts in his five innings of work. Freshmen Dallas Miller and Matt Tautges pitched two hitless innings in relief. The Saints's offense kept it going in game two, finishing with 15 hits and scoring at least one run in each of the final four innings to complete the sweep 7-1.

Berry escaped with a 9-7 win as Covenant nearly rallied from an 8-0 deficit, but ultimately fell to the visiting Vikings in non-conference action on Lookout Mountain. Berry scored five runs in the first and then single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings for a 8-0 lead before Covenent went to work only to see William Gibbons preserved the win for Berry with a perfect ninth inning.
Lynchburg put an end to No. 20-ranked Methodist's nine-game win streak with a 12-8 non-conference victory in the Hornets' 2018 debut on Fox Field. Senior center fielder Brad Hylton led the way for Lynchburg, clubbing a pair of doubles in a 3-for-4 day at that plate that saw him drive in five runs. Senior first baseman Matt Ward also had a three-hit day at the plate. Lynchburg pitching didn't yield an earned run on the day, but fielding miscues allowed the Monarchs to get back in the game late. Freshman right-hander Michael Reiskind earned the win on the mound with 3 ⅔ innings of shutout relief work.
Swarthmore won its 2018 Opening Day matchup, beating the Arcadia Knights 5-4 on a walk-off sacrifice fly. A shallow fly ball to right field by AJ Liu with one out in the bottom of the ninth was enough to bring home pinch runner Holden Bridge from third for the win. Pinch hitter James Rutledge smacked a single through the left side with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Rutledge kept Arcadia's pitcher distracted while Liu worked the count at the plate. Arcadia's relief pitcher made a pickoff attempt over to first base, but his throw sailed high allowing Rutledge to reach third. Garnet head coach subbed in Bridge to pinch run at third, and the Knights went into an aggressive five infielder shift to counter for a squeeze bunt attempt. Liu instead lofted the 3-2 pitch into right field. The ball was caught and immediately sent home, but the throw took a few hops and was off the plate allowing Bridge to slide in safely.

Neumann continued its great start to the season with a 10-3 win over Concordia-Moorhead. The Knights had 11 hits in the game, led by Dan Padilla, Andrew La Rosa and Zach Ray each with two. Cody MacNair, John Schoelkopf and La Rosa each plated a pair of runs. Eric Jester knocked in a pair. The Knights have won their first four games of the season.
The Eastern Mennonite Royals stunned the Christopher Newport, taking advantage of key mistakes to capture a 5-4 win in non-conference play. Christopher Newport smacked six extra-base hits and held the Royals without an earned run over the final five innings, but could not complete a comeback with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Victor Cavalieri struck out nine batters and allowed only two hits over five innings of work to lead the Houghton Highlanders past the Eastern Eagles, 4-2, in the season opener. Houghton manufactured runs through execution, scoring on a pair of sacrifice flies by Whitney Cook in the first and Taylor Huntsman in the fourth. They also plated a pair of runs in the second on a balk and a wild pitch. Carl Holmes picked up the save, tossing two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game. Eastern got the best of the Highlanders in a 9-4 win in the backend of the scheduled doubleheader.
Freshman Brad Demkovich threw a three-hit shutout in his collegiate debut to highlight a day of solid pitching for MSOE as it swept Hanover in a pair of games 4-2 and 3-0 in Florida. The Raiders allowed just one earned run to the Panthers and scattered six hits over 14 innings on the day. They struck out 14 batters and walked just two. Demkovich struck out six and did not walk a batter over 7.0 innings of work in game two. Freshman Julian Sonn went 3-for-4 and senior Jimmy Carrington collected two hits to drive the offense in support of Demkovich.
Hood's Dylan Beck tied the game with a two-run double and later scored the winning run, all during a three-run eighth inning, as the Blazers came from behind to defeat Lancaster Bible 5-4. The win improved Hood to 5-0 on the season. The five consecutive victories are a school record. Beck went 3 for 4 with a bunt single in addition to his game-tying double. Dylan Johnson set a school record with four bases on balls in the game.

The 15st-ranked Trinity Tigers returned to action with a 9-6 road win over the Mary Hardin-Baylor to move to 6-0 on the season. Tiger pitchers Brendan Meyer and Kevin Flores combined for 15 strikeouts in the game, allowing just three earned runs on eight hits between the two of them. Meyer struck out eight in five-plus innings and improved his season record to 2-0, while Flores picked up his first save of the year. He finished with seven strikeouts in 3.2 innings to close out the game.
No. 17 Shenandoah won its fourth game of the season with a 9-0 shutout of Mary Washington in non-league action. The shutout victory for Shenandoah is the Hornets second this season. Seniors Colin Morse and Michael Bugonowicz combined on the seven-hitter – Morse allowed three hits and three walks in the initial four innings before Bugonowicz pitched the final five. Bugonowicz scattered four hits and one walk while striking out four to earn his first victory of the season. Morse had six strikeouts in his four innings of work. Junior Keegan Woolford provided his hurlers with all of the offense they would need with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first.
Leading 3-2 with two outs in the ninth, Chatham could not close out the win as the Cougars fell 7-3 to visiting Pitt Bradford in the team's 2018 season and home opener at West Field. Pitt-Bradford got the leadoff batter on base in the ninth and after two quick outs was one swing away from a loss. The Panthers did not need that swing as four straight walks gave the Panthers the lead and a couple run scoring single, some insurance.
No. 14 Birmingham-Southern picked up its fifth win of the season, shutting out the visiting Emory Eagles 3-0 at Striplin Field. The Panthers were excellent on the mound from starting right-hander Tristan Harvin, who struck out six of his 18 batters faced, to relievers Josh Galloway and Richie Misischia Harvin picked up the win, allowing the Eagles their only three hits of the evening. Galloway pitched two solid innings, striking out two batters. Misisichia earned the save, striking out five of his six batters faced. Freshman outfielder Brian Williams led BSC at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, triple and two walks.
