NYU doubles up New Paltz, Luther gets early sweep

New York University opened up its 2018 season with a 4-2 victory over visiting SUNY New Paltz on Thursday at MCU Park in Brooklyn. Cameron Serapilio-Frank earned the opening day start for the Violets and didn't disappoint, tossing six shutout innings and striking out three. Jack Walter and Colman Hendershot led the Violet's squad with three hits apiece.

Salem State defeated Gordon 4-2 in the season opener for both teams at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Senior Steve Leavitt pitched six strong innings, allowing a pair of runs on five hits with four strikeouts to pick up the win. The game was originally scheduled for nine, but was called due to darkness.

Matthew Piechowski was a one-man wrecking crew for Saint Mary's (Minn.).  The Cardinals sophomore enjoyed his best offensive day as a Cardinal, finishing with a career-high four hits— one less than Rose-Hulman was able to muster as a team—in leading the Cardinals to an 8-4 victory in the teams' nine-inning nonconference game. Piechowski wasn't the only Cardinal enjoying a career day, either.  Joe Seegers walked four times and scored four times—both collegiate bests—while Justin Weinberg matched Piechowski with a career-high three RBIs. Ryan Wolfe picked up the pitching win, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out six in six innings of work.

Zach Hossler drove in four runs on three hits as York (Pa.) defeated Manchester 8-6 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. as part of the Spartans' Spring Break trip. Bobby Kuehn earned the win on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits in five-and-two-thirds innings pitched, and Zac Stoll cleaned it up for his second save of the season.

MSOE hit three home runs and senior Jimmy Carrington became the program's all-time leader in RBIs in a 13-6 victory over Neumann in Florida. The Raiders scored four times in the second and six times in the third to hand the Knights their first loss of the season. Carrington finished the game with four RBIs to push his career total to 99 and surpass Brad Draeger's (1997-00) career total of 98.

Late night baseball at US Bank Stadium, Minneapolis resulted in a 2-0 start, as Luther swept Carleton 7-0, 18-0 (7 inn.) Wednesday night-Thursday morning. The final pitch took place around 3:05 a.m. In game one, Collin Coffey pitched five innings and allowed just three hits and struck out five en route to his first win on the mound. Luther pounded out 14 hits that led to 18 runs in game two. The Norse exploded for 10 runs in the fourth frame and five in the fifth. Derek McCready continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for 4 in game one and 2-for-3 in game two He drove in a team best five RBI in the doubleheader sweep.

Drew Ellis had a busy day Capital with a game-winning hit and a serviceable day on the mound for the Crusaders. Joseph Borkey also had a strong showing on the bump in his first win of the season over Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.). Alma came back to best Capital, 2-1, in the nightcap. Alma junior Joseph Barrons threw a complete game from the hill and struck out five in his first start as a Scot. Senior Matt Minaudo supplied the runs for the Scots with a two-run home run to left field, his third of the season.

A big sixth inning propelled Johnson & Wales to victory on Thursday during the team's spring break trip. The Wildcats defeated John Jay, 8-3, at the Ripken Experience Complex. Seven runs were more than enough support for JWU starter Rich Marshall to pick up his first victory. He only surrendered two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Tommy Parsons tied the school record for career victories as Adrian turned back No. 14 Birmingham-Southern College, 7-4, in non-conference action. Parsons got the win in his season debut. He allowed one run and a walk while striking out five batters in seven innings of work. Junior Jordan Torrento went 1-for-2, had two runs batted in and walked three times, leading seven Bulldogs with at least one hit.

William Paterson exploded for 10 hits, including three for extra bases, during a 13-2 victory against Baruch. The game was called in the middle of the eighth inning due to darkness. Dan Carter finished 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored, and Matt Ferrara went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore starter Kyle Weiner surrendered two unearned runs over 5.0 innings, scattering four hits and a walk while registering seven strikeouts for his first win of the season.

Wells started its season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Clarks Summit at the Wells Turf Field. Wells took the opening game 4-0 and then posted a 3-0 shutout in the second game. Both teams were playing their first games of the season. Brandon Shirley carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and earned the game one victory. Over five shutout innings he struck out nine batters, allowed just one hit, and didn't issue a single walk. At the plate, his first-inning homer gave Wells its first run of the season. He had an RBI triple and scored in the third. Another shutout in game two for the Wells pitching staff included four innings from starter Jared Strait and three innings for reliever Zach Kemp. Strait earned the victory with four strikeouts and a walk. He allowed two hits. Kemp picked up the save with one hit allowed, four strikeouts and a walk.
