Brockport needs extras in BW sweep

The College at Brockport travelled to Ohio on Saturday and played two highly contested games that came down to the wire, including an extra inning affair. The Golden Eagles won the first game of the doubleheader 3-1 in ten innings, before fighting to hold a 5-3 victory in game number two.  The two wins move the Green and Gold to 3-1 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 0-2 as they start the season.

Three William Paterson Pioneers had multi-hit efforts, while senior southpaw Chris Babb provided 5.0 innings of one-run ball, as William Paterson (1-0) rolled to a 10-3 season-opening home victory against Stevens (1-3) at Jeff Albies Field. Steven DiGirolamo, Greg Cuevas and Matt Ferrara each produced a pair of hits. Babb surrendered one run on four hits and four walks, striking out seven during his 5.0 innings of work (1-0). Senior Doug Olcese tossed 2.0 shutout innings of relief, striking out two of the seven batters he faced.

Chapman earned a couple of wins this afternoon against the visiting La Verne Leopards, taking the series and improving to 8-2. Sophomore Kyle Joye hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning in his only at-bat of the day to help the Panthers in game one. Drew Littwin and Aaron Wong both doubled in each game to aid the Panther's offense.

Millsaps returned to Smith-Wills Stadium for another matchup with UW-Platteville Pioneers. Today's game was a complete opposite of yesterday's extra inning affair. In this matchup the Majors grabbed an early lead, and never looked back en route to a 21-6 win in a game that was called after 7 innings. Mason Little finished with a team-high 3 hits and 5 RBIs, including the grand slam.

Anna Maria took down the Nighthawks of Newbury College this afternoon 13-3 at the New England Baseball Complex in non-conference action. The Nighthawks had three athletes hit .500 on the day in Brian Cipolla, Brett Cabral, and Dylan Presby, who all went 2-for-4. Cipolla and Cabral both tallied two of the three RBI's for Newbury.

Stockton (2-0) began the 2019 season in impressive fashion, sweeping a doubleheader from Centenary (1-3) at the Diamond Nation complex to give new coach Dave Lorber his first two victories as a college head coach. The Ospreys routed the Cyclones 22-4 in the first game and completed the sweep 8-4. They hit four home runs on the afternoon. Joe Pipher slammed a home run in each game and finished the day 5-6 with seven RBI in the twinbill. Pipher went 3-3 with a homer and three RBI in the first game. Freshman Brendan Doherty blasted a solo home run in his first college at-bat and totaled three hits in the contest.

Northland kicked off the 2019 season today as they traveled to Jacksonville, IL for a doubleheader vs. Iowa Wesleyan. The Jacks would explode for 14 runs in game one, winning 14-5 and picked up the rare tie in game two 5-5. The Jacks would out hit Iowa Wesleyan 12-8 in game one. Noah Cross and Ben Matteson would both pick up 3 hits. The Jacks would score five early runs in game two only to see Iowa Wesleyan chip away at the LumberJack lead. After the bottom of the 5th, the game was called due to fog and the game would end in a 5-5 tie.

After torrential down pours that totaled an hour and forty-seven minutes worth of weather delays, the Blazers preserved a 5-4 win over the Centenary Gents in game one of a doubleheader, before falling by a final of 9-6 in game two. A single by Tucker Calhoun in the fourth and a double by Nick Lucido in the fifth helped score both Logan Walters and Trip Benson, as the Blazers went ahead for good. In game two, Centenary led wire-to-wire in gaining the split.

Framingham State rallied from a pair of deficits to walk off with a 7-6 nine inning victory over New England College in game one of a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Rams tied the score in the sixth and eight innings before scoring the winning run in the ninth. The Pilgrims came back and won game two 9-2.

First they had to sit and wait in their hotel rooms until 2:00 p.m. before they would be able to board the bus to travel to Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, West Virginia. Then, because of the wait, their plans to play a doubleheader today had to be scrapped in favor of playing just one game. But Nathaniel Wenson made the wait worth the while. His start and Duncan Cappar's finish helped the Blue Streaks earn a shutout in their season-opening game of the 2019 campaign. It was the first time JCU has began the year with a shutout since 2010, and is the fifth time overall (1974, 1975, 2001, 2010, 2019).

Visiting Albright scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning at Volpe Field to defeat The University of Scranton in the season opener for both teams, 3-2.  The Royals (0-1) received five scoreless innings from junior starting pitcher Bobby Hegarty and twice led by a run before the Lions (1-0) were able to rally for the victory.

Maritime (N.Y). opened up its 2019 season with a bang as they swept Southern Vermont by scores of 6-5 and 12-5. The opening game was highlighted by a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh by Adam Mosca. The Privateers then kept the momentum going into game two as they dominated the Mountaineers by scoring 11 runs in the final four innings.

Bates broke into the win column for the first time with a 12-3 win over Capital. The Bobcat infield accounted for seven of the 14 hits in the game as production can everwhere in the lineup. Capital also fell to Augustana 9-3 earlier in the day.

Occidental rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third and then picked it up in the late innings in a 6-3 win over Whitworth at Anderson Field Nolan McCarthy picked up his second win of the season as Oxy's starter, going six innings with three earned runs and eight strikeouts. Eamon McNeil went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs, including a single that put Oxy in the lead in the third. After Whitworth had got to within one at 4-3, he drove in another run to give Oxy some breathing room. Occidental completed the sweep with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

Trinity's fourth-ranked baseball team held on for a wild 14-12 win over Endicott. Endicott picked up ten runs in the first and last two innings but Trinity won the middle innings, scoring in five consecutive innings. Endicott loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but stranded two of the three runners endng their comback bid.

The home season didn't get off to a pretty start, but Puget Sound is poised for a big bounce back after losing the first game of a three-game Northwest Conference series against Willamette. The Bearcats won the first game, 13-0. Puget Sound holds a 12-2 lead through six innings of the second game, which was suspended due to darkness and will resume Sunday.In game one the Bearcats pounded out 17 hits and Matt Steindorf struck out seven batters over the first seven innings to send Willamette to the win.

Texas-Dallas closed out a crucial in-region series with No. 3-ranked Texas Lutheran with a doubleheader split against the 2018 NCAA Division III national runner up. The Comets (4-6) dropped the opener to TLU, 5-1, but bounced back for a 9-5 win over the Bulldogs in the final game to take the series, 2-1. Senior Thomas Craig continued to swing a hot bat as he went 4-for-6 with his fifth home run of the season as the Comets earned the series victory

Washington and Lee claimed a 4-3 game one win over Emory, before the Eagles won game two of the doubleheader, 8-6, on to edge the Generals, 2-1, in the three-game series. The win in game one marked the Generals' first win over Emory since a 6-4 decision favored the Blue and White on February 19, 2013. The doubleheader split leaves the Generals' overall record at 6-3, while the Eagles go to 4-2 on the season.

Kean rallied with four ninth inning runs to push past #11 Misericordia by the final of 6-5. Trailing 5-2 coming into their last at-bat, Kean (5-1) walked the bases loaded with no outs (pinch-hitter Tim Huxen, John Carello and Chris Vetter).  Frank LoGiudice followed with his own walk to inch Kean closer, 5-3.  Zachary Marzano broke up the walk streak with an RBI single to pull Kean within one.  That set up Nick Polizzano who lined a shot just out of reach of the third baseman down the line for the game winning runs and the walk-off win.

Messiah opened the 2019 season in New York. Yes, you read that right, the Messiah Falcons traveled north to open the new season. With temperatures and weather better north than south, Messiah started the season with a 10-2 victory over the Houghton Highlanders and followed that win with a second victory on opening day with a 6-1 victory over Alfred State. The game with Houghton was scoreless through six, but the Falcons struck for three runs in the top of the seventh. After the Highlanders countered for two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, Messiah hung a seven spot on the board to put the game out of reach. Against Alfred State, Messiah scored once on a throwing error in the first before plating four runs in the fourth on four hits including a two-run single by Jimmy Kustra. The Pioneers scored once in the sixth, but Messiah held on for the 6-1 victory to start the season 2-0.

After jumping out to a 2-0 series lead after Friday's doubleheaders, Howard Payne sent Louisiana College home winless after a 17-5 thrashing in the final game of the weekend. An error filled game for the Wildcats gave HPU a lot of chances to put up runs as the Jackets scored eight uneraned runs. RJ Roberts and Nolyn Box led the Jackets with 3 hits apiece. Noah Payne led the team in RBIs with 3, with Ty McCain, RJ Roberts, Rylee McGee and Cliff Lunceford all adding 2 RBIs of their own.

Pacific extended its winning streak to six in a row with a doubleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark, 4-0 and 4-2 in 12 innings to begin Northwest Conference play in Portland. The Boxers (8-3) were sparked by its solid performance of starting pitchers Casey Brown in game one and Trevor Quinn in game two. Brown went the distance for his second-straight complete game, scattering five hits and striking out 10 in the shutout win. Quinn went six solid innings, allowing four hits and striking out five in a no decision. He handed the ball off to three relievers, including Bryce Wlodarchak, who pitched the final two innings of one-hit relief in the win. It is the second-straight year that Pacific has had at least a six-game winning streak. The Pioneers (0-6) were kept in check by Brown in game one and left 15 runners on base in the nightcap.
