Sweeps Saturday for Top 25 teams

All-American Matt Mulhearn pitched eight shutout innings and allowed just three hits and struck out nine in Webster's 7-0 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Westminster. Webster completed the sweep with a 5-3 win in game two.

No. 21 Shenandoah finished off a weekend ODAC baseball sweep over Guilford with a 6-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field. Shenandoah (5-1, 2-0 ODAC) used three pitchers in throwing a five-hitter to push past the Quakers (0-2, 0-2). Sophomore Calvin Pastel (1-0) started and allowed two runs on three hits in five innings of work. He struck out three. Junior Cade Templeton took over to start the sixth and struck out five in recording the next 10 outs. With one out and no one on, SU skipper Kevin Anderson turned to starting second baseman Colby Martin to get the final two outs and the freshman delivered with a pair of groundouts sandwiched around a walk. The Shenandoah offense was held to seven hits, but scored two in the first, one in the second and three more in the fourth to safely secure the conference sweep. Martin, Keegan Woolford and Anthony Ward all had two hits with Ward and Martin both driving in a pair. Martin had his first RBI on a triple to center in the second. Drew Sawyer (0-1) took the loss for Guilford. He gave up three runs on one hit and one walk in working the first inning of the contest.

A walk-off RBI single by sophomore Brooks Mazey capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap as No. 11 Randolph-Macon completed a sweep of an ODAC doubleheader against Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon. The R-MC offense was loud in the opener. The Yellow Jackets scored four in the first without the benefit of a hit. A two-run single by Mooney highlighted a six-run second as the advantage grew to 10-0. With darkness approaching in game two, the Yellow Jackets would rally in the seventh. Mazey's base hit brought in Myles Webb with the game-winning run. The game was halted in the bottom of the seventh due to darkness.

Trinity (Texas) bounced back from its first loss of the season with a late charge to take a 13-8 road win over Sul Ross State on Saturday night. The game was delayed six hours due to high winds in the area that blew the roof off of the batting cage as the teams were preparing for the afternoon start. Trinity improves to 8-1 on the season with the win and sets up tomorrow's rubber match in the three-game weekend series at Sul Ross. Trinity scored nine runs over the final two innings to pull past Sul Ross, beginning with a grand slam from Michael Goodrich in the top of the eighth. The Tigers added five more runs with two outs in the top of the ninth, including a two-run triple off the bat of Jack Wisniewski and a run-scoring single from Tyler Pettit.

No. 7-ranked Washington University earned its first road wins of the season with 7-0 and 10-2 victories over Dubuque. Senior pitcher Ryan Loutos only allowed two hits in his seven innings from the mound in game one. He struck out 12 batters and earned his second win of the season. Fellow senior Jared Fong closed out the final two innings. Junior Tim Van Kirk recorded a team-high four RBIs off of three hits in the nightcap. Troy Bauer earned his first win of the season with seniors Mitchell Black and Tim Tague taking the last four innings and not allowing a single hit. WashU batters recorded a total of 17 runs on 26 hits with the pitchers tallying 24 strikeouts during Saturday games.

Ohio Northern split the first doubleheader of the season against No. 25 Heidelberg Saturday at Wander Field. Heidelberg (1-1 overall) won the opener 6-5 in 13 innings while ONU (1-1) took the nightcap 5-3 in a game called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to darkness. Junior Chayten Overholt went 4-for-7 with 2 triples and 2 singles on the day for the Polar Bears. The games did not count toward the OAC Regular Season standings as each team will open the season with a 4-game series that will be treated as non-conference contests.

Centre played its third different ranked team of the young season as the Colonels welcomed the no. 20 Berry Vikings to Gary Wright Field for the first half of a four-game set. After allowing a late rally to the Vikings in a 9-4 loss, Centre rebounded with a 5-0 shutout in seven innings thanks to a brilliant pitching performance by Carson Werrmann. Jess Miller's eight strikeouts in the game one loss nearly doubled his season total to 17. Making his first start since Mar. 7 of last year, Werrmann tossed an absolute gem, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out eight on 109 pitches.

Kean University split action with William Paterson University on Saturday in non-conference action as the #12 Cougars won the opener 4-3 and lost the nightcap 5-1. Graduate student Kevin Stewart picked up the win after tossing six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He fanned six and walked one. Graduate student Frank Dente IV recorded the save after tossing two innings of scoreless, hitless ball. Jack DeFouw earned the win for WP after tossing six innings allowing six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Darmany Rivas earned the save after tossing two innings of scoreless ball
