Marietta wins late, takes series

Alec Michaelson scattered 10 hits over seven innings Sunday and picked up his fourth win in as many decisions, as Augustana defeated Illinois Wesleyan 6-4 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Coach Greg Wallace's club improved to 19-5 on the year and 11-5 in the CCIW, while the Titans dropped to 15-12 overall and 10-5 in the league.

Jared Weiss delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning leading No. 5 ranked Marietta College to a 7-5 win over Baldwin Wallace University Sunday afternoon. Game two of the scheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader was canceled. Marietta took two out of three games from the Yellow Jackets this weekend improving to 18-3 overall and 16-2 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace falls to 13-9-1 on the season and 12-6-1 in conference play. Trailing 5-4 heading into the top of the eighth inning, Drew Holderbach led off with an infield single. Following a strikeout, Cottom singled to left moving Holderbach to third. Castle tied the game with a single down the left field line that scored Holderbach and moved Cottom to third. Weiss followed with his third hit of the game scoring Cottom and Castle for the 7-5 lead.

Freshman Cam Seymour went 5 for 8 with three doubles, a home run and four RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept a Little East Conference doubleheader from the Keene State College Owls by scores of 6-4 and 10-5 Sunday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field. The two wins extended the 21st-ranked Huskies current winning streak to four games, and improved their record to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Owls have dropped seven straight to stand at 2-11 overall and 1-6 in LEC play. In the opening game of the twin bill, Seymour became the 20th player in program history to have three doubles in a single game, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored. In the nightcap, Seymour was 2 for 4, including his team-leading seventh home run of the season, with two runs scored and four RBI. Led by Seymour, Southern Maine had 24 hits in the doubleheader.

The third-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls scored nine unanswered runs in the final two innings to finally put away the 15th-ranked Shenandoah Hornets, surviving a 19-10 barnburner on Sunday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field. The first five hitters in the Sea Gull batting order became a wrecking crew, combining to go 11-for-27 with 10 runs and 14 RBIs. Kavi Caster stood out from the two-hole, going 3-for-6 with a double, four runs, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Salisbury now improves to 3-1 against ranked foes this season, with all three wins coming against top-15 teams.

The Aurora Spartans traveled to Illinois Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon for a conference doubleheader matchup. The Spartans swept the Scarlet Hawks, winning game one 10-3 and game two 18-8. The Spartans started out hot scoring four in the first inning of the day. Nick Malmberg was keeping the IIT off balance, but ran into trouble in the 6th giving up two runs on four hits. Maintining the lead, Aurora added runs in the late innings. In game two, the Spartans took advantage of some IIT errors and walk as they scored 8 in the 9th on four hits to put the game away.

No. 10 Washington & Jefferson College had its school-record 22-game season-opening win streak halted in the Presidents' doubleheader split at Chatham on Sunday afternoon. The Presidents now stand at 23-1 on the season and 17-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. Chatham moves to 7-15 overall and 6-11 in league play. The Cougars held the Presidents to a season-low three runs in W&J's first loss of 2021. Chatham's Erik Napolitano relieved starter Dominic Costellic in the fifth inning with the Presidents leading 3-1 and didn't surrender a run the rest of the way. The Presidents posted big second and sixth innings to avenge their game one defeat.

Wheaton College split against Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Govoni Field. The Lyons took game one by a 7-1 score, while the Beavers won game two with a 5-3 final. With the victory, Wheaton and Babson improve to 6-2 overall. Juniors Jake Studley and Zach DeMattio combine for three home runs and 6 RBIs to push the Lyons towards a dominating 7-1 win over Babson in game one of today's doubleheader. Studley finished the day 2-for-4 with two home runs and 5 RBIs in the Lyon win. Strong performances from Zach DeMattio, Nick Croteau and Andrew Spirito were not enough to push the Wheaton Lyons past the Babson Beavers in a 3-5 NEWMAC loss. The loss results in a split for the four game series.

Shutting out Carthage College for the third-straight game to complete the weekend series sweep, a complete game shutout from Luke Lamm propelled North Central College to a 7-0 final on Sunday at Zimmerman Stadium. Following up a pair of shutouts in Saturday's doubleheader sweep, Lamm wanted in on the action this afternoon, as Cardinal pitching shut down the Firebird lineup over the three-game sweep, allowing zero runs over 28 total innings. Lamm retired the first nine batters he faced while the Cardinal offense got on the board early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI triple down the right field line off the bat of Paul Beverly, scoring Justin Rios and Jared Wojcik who were both hit by a pitch.

No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis matched up with Spalding for a second day of doubleheaders on Sunday. Junior Bo Anderson scored two late runs as Wash U broke a 1-1 tie in game one. In game two, Clayton Miller made his second appearance from the mound this season, pitching three innings and earning his first win in relief of Austin Sachem. Dominick DiCosimo finished the game wit two scoreless innings.
