Battle of Top 5 teams, sweeps dominate Saturday action

The Widener pitching staff had a rough day as it is not easy playing a doublheader with no 1. Salisbury and  No. 14 Cortland. The top-ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls came out firing on all cylinders in its season opener, blasting four home runs with five pitchers combining to shut out the Widener Pride, 16-0, on Saturday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. Jackson Balzan (1-0) spearheaded the clean sheet for the Sea Gulls, allowing three hits over five innings with one walk and five strikeouts. With a fourth-inning punchout, Balzan became the sixth player in Salisbury history to amass 200 career strikeouts. Robbie Hollenbeck, Mitchell Wittkamp, Corey Burton and Todd Hendrix combined to shut down the Pride over the final four innings and wrap up the six-hit shutout.Cortland scored nine runs over the first two innings and finished the game with 20 hits as the nationally 14th-ranked Red Dragons defeated Widener University, 16-1, to open the season at Salisbury's Williams Stadium. Matthew Krafft finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and was one of six Cortland players to finish with multiple hits. Nick Chemotti was 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBI, Dylan Mackenzie went 2-for-3 with a triple, walk, two RBI and two runs, and Zachary Kringdon finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Chris Bonacci ended 2-for-4 with two runs and Dan Jackson came off the bench and went 2-for-2. Cortland will face host and nationally top-ranked Salisbury in a doubleheader Sunday at 10 a.m.

Gallaudet's Christina Elsbury pitched in today's
second game against Elmira and became the first
woman to play on a Bison baseball team. Gallaudet
won the opener 11-3 and dropped the nightcap 22-3.

No. 21 Shenandoah continued its winning ways Saturday by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from Misericordia. Shenandoah (4-0) was a 6-2 winner in the opener before finishing off the Cougars (0-2) with an 11-5 victory in the nightcap. Two runs in the first, along with one in the third, gave the Hornets the lead for good in the opener. Gavin Horning was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Colby Martin was 2-for-4 with three RBI. The Hornets banged out 16 hits in the 11-5, game two victory with Frankie Ritter and Pearce Bucher both getting three each.

First-year right fielder Matt Worth drilled a first-pitch fastball over the left field fence in the top of the fourth inning to score the Lycoming College's first two runs in its rebirth, but Greensboro College posted an 11-2 win in both teams' season opener on Saturday afternoon at Ted Leonard Park. Worth came up after sophomore Jake Schilling reached on a blooper into right that found the turf to lead off the frame. After a pop out, Worth delivered the school's first runs in a baseball game since May 5, 1971, when the 1971 team lost to Elizabethtown, 4-3, in the season finale. The blast tied the game at 2, but Greensboro (1-0 overall) responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, three in the seventh and four in the eighth.

Marymount picked up its first two wins of the season on Saturday afternoon against Stevenson by scores of 7-4 and 3-0. Blake Doggett smoked a game-tying three-run shot in game one that turned the momentum in Marymount's favor after falling behind 3-0 to start the game. Dylan Heil picked up the win in relief in game one after throwing six strikeouts over 4.2 innings. He didn't surrender any earned runs and only allowed one walk. David Muirhead threw a gem in game two as he took a perfect game into the sixth inning. He picked up the win after throwing 6.2 innings and only allowing one hit.

The University of the South picked up two victories on Saturday to stay unbeaten in the early stages of the 2023 season. After holding on for a 6-5 win in the opener, the Purple and White had a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th to defeat Fontbonne in the night cap, 7-6. Sewanee added four runs in the seventh for a four run advantage in game one. The Tigers turned to the bullpen and despite a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth to make it a 7-6 score, Colby Shivers grounded out to end the game. In the bottom of the ninth of the nightcap, the Tigers had an opportunity to end the game in regulation but left runners at second and third. After Henry Shields tossed a 1-2-3 inning, the Tigers' bats went back to work. However, with two outs, it came down to freshman Oliver Snell. He would get into one, sending it over the left field fence for the walk-off winner.

Opening their season down in Carbondale, Illinois,North Central College scored in seven straight innings, including 10 in the final three innings to earn a 16-5 victory over Ripon College on Saturday night at Itchy Jones Stadium. Rob Marinec went 4-for-5 on the night with four runs and two runs batted in. Justin Rios and Michael Davis each drove in three runs on their two hits and also scored two runs apiece. Luke Lamm struck out six batters in his four innings pitched to earn the win. He allowed just two earned runs on the night.

Washington and Lee took the season opener with a 14-3, seven-inning win against Ursinus College on Saturday. The Generals gave the home crowd a show with a seven-run fifth inning beginning with a leadoff double by Mason Satterfield. Sophomore catcher Campbell Charneco then doubled to center field to score Satterfield, followed by RBI singles by Jacob Jackson, junior first baseman Drew Larsen, and senior center fielder Mitchell Salvino to give the Blue and White a 9-3 lead. Sophomore pitcher John Benner (1-0) earned the win after a solid six-inning performance. After allowing three hits in the first inning, Benner held the Grizzly Bears to just one hit in his final five frames.

Kean used pitching gems to sweep visiting Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday by the finals of 7-1 and 1-0. Collin Kiernan (2-0) earned his second win of the season as he fired eight innings allowing just one unearned run and three hits in the opener. He walked just one and struck out 11. Noah Rivera closed out the ninth facing one over the minimum with two strikeouts. Justin Diefenbach (1-1) fired a complete game shutout allowing just five singles along the way in the nighcap. He walked no one and struck out 13.

Maryville picked up victories in both ends of a
doubleheader against Oglethorpe on Saturday at
Scotland Yard. The Scots are now 4-0 to begin the
2023 season, their best start since winning eight
straight to kick off 2018.

Buena Vista began its season with a pair of games against Hamline winning the first game 23-5 and the second game 14-11. In the opener, the Beavers lineup made its presence known right out of the gate. The unit belted three homeruns - from Drew Taylor, Evan Taylor, and Joel Garcia - to jump out to an early 6-0 lead in the second inning. The six-run outburst proved to just the beginning, as the Beavers would go on to score 23 total runs. The Beavers lineup picked up right where they left off in the nightcap, opening the game by scoring four runs in the first. Unlike the first game, Hamline responded with big rallies of their own. The teams traded blows throughout the game, but BVU's offense proved to be too much for Hamline to overcome.

Fans that braved the frigid temperatures on Saturday at Captains Park were treated to a sunny afternoon of outstanding performances as Christopher Newport picked up a pair of wins over New Paltz (0-2) on the first weekend action of the 2023 season. Freshman Brandon Cassedy twirled an historic gem in the opener, leading the Captains to a two-hit shutout, 5-0, and Ethan Weaver blasted his first career home run, a grand slam, to highlight an 11-run outburst in game two, 11-4. The pitching staff combined to strike out 22 batters in the two games while allowing just four runs on eight hits. Offensively, CNU blistered 17 hits and scored 16 runs while showcasing an excellent eye at the dish, working 16 walks in the doubleheader. The day was headlined by an outstanding collegiate debut for rookie right-hander Brandon Cassedy. Taking the hill for the first time in his Captains' career, the Manassas, Va. punched out nine New Paltz batters over six scoreless innings of work. He is the first player in the 42-year history of the program to strike out nine or more in his collegiate debut.

The University of Dubuque Spartans opened their 2023 campaign with a pair of road victories for head coach Paul Wyczawski. The Spartans dominated the season opener 17-1 in seven innings over Blackburn College. UD improved to 2-0 after a 6-5 battle against Ripon College on Saturday afternoon. UD scored 17 runs off 17 hits against Blackburn, left 10 runners on base, and committed a pair of errors. Nine Spartans finished with a hit and were led by Colton Pfeifer who ended the game with three hits in four at bats with two runs scored, two doubles, and an RBI. UD scored six runs off 11 hits and committed one error. Ripon scored five runs off 12 hits and committed two errors. Aiden Sullivan started the game and threw five scoreless innings, walking two and fanning five batters. Derek Hardin collected the win after throwing three innings, allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts. Aidan Elfering collected the save with one inning of work in the ninth, allowing two earned runs and walking one batter.

The magic came early at the Milkjug Saturday as Piedmont pounced on #16 Lynchburg with a five-spot in the first inning to claim a 5-4 win over the Hornets. The Lions chased the Hornets' starter Mason McDowell after just 0.2 innings as he surrendered all five runs and faced the entire order. The Hornets went to the bullpen early using a total of four pitchers in the game.

Hardin-Simmons split a pair of one-run games with No. 5 Trinity on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio, winning 2-1 in the first game and falling 6-5 in 10 innings in the nightcap. Caidon Livingston went eight strong innings and Wyatt Tumlinson worked the ninth inning for a save for the Cowboys in a 2-1 win. Livingston went eight innings and allowed just four hits and an unearned run to improve to 1-1 on the year. In the second game, Trinity jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. HSU then battled back as Kirbride had an RBI single in the sixth and again in the eighth. Nick Ellington scored on an error, Antonelli had an RBI single and Azios single to left to tie the game at 4-4. Antonelli had a leadoff home run in the 10th inning to give HSU a 5-4 lead but Hunter Nevilles had a two-run single for the Tigers to win the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Hood opened their season with two wins, 14-3 and 5-2 over Central Pennslyvania. In game one, it was all Hood as they put up a crooked number in the first three innings to cuise to the win. In the nightcap, The Blazers struggled early in the first inning with five walks and an error but rebounded in the later innings to outscore Central Pennsylvania 5-0 to win.

Berry swept Pfeiffer in the first two games of the three game series to open the season Saturday afternoon at William R. Bowdoin Field, winning 21-8 and 3-1. The Vikings put up at least one run each inning of the opening game as they put the Falcons away after seven innings. The sixth inning was a big inning as the Vikings put up 12 runs, seven hits, and seven walks. Wesley Wade, Zachary Hardee, Ronnie Caricofe, and Levi Cloud all had two-run RBIs with John Poist and Riley Uhls with RBIs bringing the score to the final margin. The second game was more typical of a baseball game. Patrick O'Rouke was the starting pitcher for the Vikings and gave only four hits to the Falcons and had five strikeouts throughout his six innings pitched to earn the win.

No. 4 Birmingham-Southern second baseman Andrew Dutton drove in four runs with two extra-base hits Saturday, and sophomore right-hander Joey White went six innings allowing three earned runs as the Panthers posted a 9-5 win over No. 3 LaGrange at Striplin Field. White (2-0) earned the win, as he allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Luke Jones earned his first save of the season going three innings, striking out five hitters and allowing just a single hit. In a non conference SAA matchup, BSC defeated Millsaps 11-7. BSC has three wins in four games over teams with a top 5 ranking.

Washington & Jefferson opened their 2023 season with a 10-6 non-conference win over Muskingum at Ross Memorial Park Saturday. The Presidents were powered by Jacob LaDuca's four RBI and two hits. W&J opened the scoring in the bottom of the third to see Muskingum's offense tie the game in the top of the fifth to even the contest at 1-1. W&J's offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth, adding seven runs to put the game out of reach. Tyler Horvat was a bright spot for the Presidents on the mound. He struck out eight and allowed just one earned run on one hit in five innings.

Washington University opened the 2023 season with a pair of wins over the University of the Ozarks, 10-1 and 8-4. In game one, Zac Malis went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Shane Pellegrino finished 3-for-3 with two RBI. Matt Lopes picked up the win on the mound, going six innings with five strikeouts, three hits, one run and two walks. Hank Weiss came on to pitch two innings of relief with three strikeouts. In game two, the Bears exploded for four runs in the ninth for the winning margin. Will Henkel picked up the win on the mound, pitching four innings of relief with five strikeouts, three hits and two runs.

Senior Ethan Currin had five hits, including four home runs, along with 10 RBIs to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a pair of non-conference wins on Saturday in Staunton. Currin had two homers and five RBIs during a 15-4 road win at Mary Baldwin in game one, before slamming two more homers with five more RBIs during a 14-4 neutral-site win past Washington College in game two. Senior captain Ryan Boyce added three hits and two RBIs against the host Fighting Squirrels, and freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp gained the pitching win for the visiting Tigers in the seven-inning contest. Junior Trent Jones added three hits and five RBIs against the Shoremen, and sophomore Gavin Gregory gained the pitching win.

Texas-Dallas wrapped up the season-opening road trip by splitting a pair of games on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field. The Comets (2-1) dropped the first game to host Texas Lutheran 13-3 in seven innings, but rebounded to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 16-6. The host Bulldogs (3-5) jumped out to a 7-1 lead after four innings. The Comets added a run in the fifth and again in the sixth before TLU ended the game by run-rule with a six spot in the seventh. In the second game, the Stags went up 2-1 through three innings. UTD tied the game in bottom of the fourth when first baseman Robert Hines doubled and scored on a base hit by center fielder Jaeger Self. The Comets took control of the contest with a seven-run fifth. Third baseman Dylan BIvins hit a two-run homer and Hines hit a grand slam to highlight the inning. CMS scored twice in the seventh to make the game 9-4, but UTD scored five more times in the bottom half on five hits and an error. Both teams scored twice in the eighth for the final 16-6 tally.

Millikin swept a doubleheader from Belhaven in games played at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Millikin won game one 3-0 and took the second game 11-9. In game one, three Millikin pitchers combined to shutout Belhaven. Starter Caleb Buehrle was the winning pitcher throwing five innings allowing just two hits while striking out seven. Sean Shook threw two innings allowing just one hit and Andrew Agee threw the final two scoreless innings allowing two hits. In game two, Millikin got the offense goingl leading wire-to-wire. Liam McGill continued his hot hitting going 3-5 scoring two runs.

No. 10 Baldwin Wallace knocked off Centre in a non-conference doubleheader on the Gary Wright Field inside Fishman Park. BW (2-0) opened the day with 11-0 win in eight innings and then used a late inning surge to pick up a 9-7 win over Centre (0-2). Game one was highlighted the pitching duo of senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe and junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Maruna who combined for eight no-hit innings allowing just three walks. Gabe pitched six innings and Maruna completed the last two. On the offensive end senior All-American Luke Vonderhaar went 3-5 with two home runs, knocked in five RBIs and three runs. Game two was highlighted by senior catcher JT Mazula who went 2-3 with a bases clearing double in the seventh to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-6 lead. DJ Doria hit a pitch home run.

George Fox played their first home games of the 2023 season against the Linfield Wildcats, losing the first game 3-12 but bouncing back 12-5 to split the days' games and setting themselves up for a potential series win on Sunday. In game one, Fox struck first, but Linfield scored four runs in the second inning. The Fox bats showed up big in the second game, scoring 12 after a monster eighth inning that proved to be the difference in the Bruins 12-5 win.

Alma found their way into the win column on Saturday
as they faced off against Virginia Wesleyan University in
North Carolina. The Scots routed the Marlins 16-4 in eight
innings for their first win of the season.

Cal Lutheran took down the Whitworth Pirates in both doubleheader games On Saturday afternoon. The Kingsmen won the first game 11-2 and the second game 7-6. These wins bring Cal Lutheran's overall record to 3-2. Chris Torres opened the game and faced 25 batters. He pitched for the first six innings, only allowing seven hits and two runs. He recorded four strikeouts, one walk and got the win. John Frazier started the second game on the mound. He pitched for 5 innings and faced 25 batters. He allowed six hits and five runs. He also had four walks and three strikeouts.

Junior Myles Webb went 4-for-6 with two runs and one RBI as Randolph-Macon swept a season-opening doubleheader from Pitt-Bradford on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets won 8-0 and 6-2. In game one, the Yellow Jackets starting the scoring in the bottom of the first as senior Ethan Iannuzzi belted a one-out homer to left to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 advantage. RMC put the game with a six-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run single from junior Grayson Bush as the lead grew to 8-0. In the nightcap, RMC grabbed the early lead again as junior Drew Ramos recorded the win, going 5.1 innings with four hits, two runs, one walk and six strikeouts.

Messiah opened the 2023 season on Saturday in Fayetteville, N.C. winning their first game of the season in dramatic fashion. Facing the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, Thomas Zeigler hammered a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth and Messiah escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the frame to earn a 9-8 victory. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead, but needed a Thomas Zeigler go-ahead, solo home run in the top of the ninth to break an 8-8 tie. Even after the Zeigler homer in the ninth, Messiah needed to escape a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the frame to claim the victory.

LeTourneau completed a three-game sweep of visiting Dillard on Saturday with a pair of wins at Conrad-Vernon Field. Behind five homers on the day, the YellowJackets took the opener 11-6 before earning a 12-2 win in the finale. Dane Jones hit two home runs and LeTourneau rallied from a 6-3 deficit with eight runs over a two-inning stretch to take Saturday's opener. A six-run second inning ignited a run-rule win for the YellowJackets in the finale, 12-2.

Alfred State traveled to Ferrum, VA to open their season against the Ferrum Panthers and won both games of the Saturday doubleheader. The first game saw the Pioneers win 11-6 and game to was a 12-8 final. The Pioneers fell behind 2-0 in the second inning when Ferrum scored two runs on aggressive baserunning and an infield hit. The Pioneers answered with 2 runs of their own in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Nick Serce double to centerfield. Alfred State piled on the runs in the 7th and 8th innings. The Pioneer bats tallied 9 runs on 7 hits in the late game rallies. The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The three runs for ASC came from a Brody Burdett 2 RBI double and a Bobby Sellers sac fly. Ferrum came back with a run in the bottom of the 1st and a five-run second inning, taking the lead 6-3. The Pioneers chipped away, eventually taking back the lead with a run in the 5th and three runs in the 7th.

It was a mixed bag for Pacific Lutheran in its home and Northwest Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. The Lutes lit up the scoreboard in a 9-3 win over Lewis & Clark to open the day but was unable to replicate that success in game two, stumbling 7-2 to the Pioneers at PLU Field. The visiting Pioneers (8-2, 1-1 NWC) drew first blood with Jack Thomson blasting a solo home run in the top of the first inning of the opener. The Lutes took the lead for good in the second, pouring on three runs. A Braeden Lundberg single scored Ethan Keintz for the go-ahead score before a Sean Kauffman double down the line, plated two more the 4-1 advantage. L&C added two in the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Lutes collected the game one victory. In game two, Jack Thomson ripped a solo home run in the top of the first and again in the top of the third, putting the Pios up 2-0. That lead swelled to seven with five more runs in the eighth inning. The Lutes put a dent in the lead in the eighth with a Barber single scoring Schmitz and Luke Baier but it wasn't enough as PLU cranked out 11 hits but mustered just two runs.

Junior Ty Lowe connected for a pair of two-run hits and Justin Ritz and Jackson Beale combined to scatter nine hits, as the University of Mary Washington opened the 2023 season with a 5-3 victory over Mount Saint Mary on Saturday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. After the Knights scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, the Eagles knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. Jonathan Sedmak was hit by a pitch and went to third on a double from Bobby Ayscue, and both runners scored on a Lowe single to left. UMW went ahead with two more in the fifth. Mike Dennis was hit by a pitch, and Sedmak walked with two outs. Ayscue walked to load the bases, and Lowe followed with another two-run hit. Mount Saint Mary scored once in the sixth, but the Eagles answered when Ryan Schwarz was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Alex Purgason. Ritz gained the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. Beale pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit, striking out three.

Whitman team kicked off Northwest Conference play with a doubleheader split against Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon. The Blues won the opener 6-2 before falling in the nightcap 7-4. The opener saw Garrett Runyan homer twice, the second a three-run bomb that blew the game open for the Blues. The Loggers got on the board in the seventh to cut the Whitman lead to 3-1, but one inning later he belted a pitch over the left field wall to put his team up by five runs and essentially close the door. In the nightcap, Jack McCullar hit a solo home in the seventh inning, Gabe Huante hit a two-run double and Puget Sound got outstanding efforts from its starting pitchers as the Loggers prevailed in the nightcap 7-4.This story will be updated.
