Top ranked teams take beating on Sunday

Graduate student Ryan Noone and senior Michael Cook combined to drive in eight runs as visiting Babson College defeated No. 5 Trinity (Texas) 11-6, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Trinity Baseball Complex.

Jarrett Korson threw a complete-game four-hit shutout, striking out eight, in the opener and Henry Connell threw 6.1 strong innings in the nightcap, allowing just two runs, as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took both ends of a road doubleheader over Chapman 5-0 and 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Hart Park. Derek Seneker provided all the offense CMS would need in the fourth with an RBI double. In the nightcap, CMS got off to a 3-0 lead in the second on just one hit. Chapman finally got on the board for the first time in 14 innings of the doubleheader in the bottom of the fifth, when they pushed across a run on a two-out RBI single from AJ Anzai. Connell closed the door there with a strikeout of Davis Mieliwocki to keep it a 4-1 game heading into the sixth. Chapman got a run closer but could not close the gap as the Stags completed the sweep.

Rose-Hulman picked up its first win of the 2023 season by taking down No. 3 ranked LaGrange 6-3 on Sunday afternoon in Georgia. Brett Borcherding and Josh Erpenbeck combined to allow just two earned runs to provide the pitching needed for the Fightin' Engineers to pick up the victory. Erpenbeck picked up the win in relief by allowing one earned run with one strikeout in 4.2 innings. Borcherding allowed just one run with one strikeout in 4.1 innings of work. Andy Krajecki, Peter Rogers and Blake Deckard led the Rose-Hulman offense with two hits each.

Christopher Newport senior starter Dylan Weber (3-0) pieced together one of the finest outings of his illustrious career on Sunday afternoon, firing six innings of no-hit ball against the No. 6 Marietta (2-2). Weber struck out six and kept the Etta Express off balance all afternoon while the offense scored eight runs in the sixth to blow open a big win at the D3 Showcase, 10-0. The Captains improved to 9-1 with the performance after another excellent week with a 4-1 record in five games. Weber has been a catalyst for the early season success, improving to 3-0 while allowing just four hits over his first 17.1 innings pitched. On Sunday, the southpaw moved up the top-ten all-time in career strikeouts at CNU with 186, passing Josh Husby for ninth all-time. His six punchouts against Marietta give him 25 so far this season paired with just seven walks.

Washington & Jefferson College scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally the Red and Black past No. 10 Baldwin Wallace University in a 10-9 victory Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Ross Memorial Park. Trailing by a 9-6 score in the bottom of the seventh, the Presidents had five-straight batters reach base after one out. After B-W recorded a strikeout for the second out of the frame, a passed ball allowed Nolan Lutz to come home for the eventual game-deciding run. Dante DiMatteo put a runner on in both the eighth and ninth innings. However, DiMatteo was able to nail down the victory for the Presidents. The sophomore struck out two and did not allow a hit over the final two innings. Cameron Hayman picked up the win in relief. In the late game, Baldwin-Wallace picked up their second win of the weekend against No. 17 nationally-ranked State University of New York – Oswego by a final score of 7-6 in 10 innings.

The RIT Tigers set program records for runs (29), hits (33), total bases (52), and RBIs (28) while graduate 1B Ian Libby went 7-7 to set a program record for hits by a player in a game as RIT defeated host Gallaudet in the final game of the Gallaudet Bison Baseball Classic on Sunday, 29-1. Senior Alex Slotter pitched four no-hit innings for the win, and was followed by three innings of no-hit ball by senior Peter Bossinas and two shutout innings by first year Trent Rapp, who made his collegiate pitching debut in relief. The 29 runs scored by RIT eclipsed the previous mark of 27, scored on April 9, 2022 against St. Lawrence.

Batting 3-4 in the order, senior catcher Matt Malcom and senior DH Colby Linnell both homered and first-year pitcher Dylan Scudder struck out nine over first four innings of his first appearance and start to lift Eastern Connecticut State to a 7-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan University Sunday afternoon at Perry Field. A winner of 26 straight over two seasons, the 2022 NCAA Division III national champions collected 12 hits off four Virginia Wesleyan (1-6) pitchers. Batting third in the order, Malcom had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored and is now batting.538 (7-for-13) with three home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored in three games.

In a matchup for nationally ranked teams at Skip Wilson Field, No. 19 Ithaca and No. 15 Arcadia split a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. The Bombers prevailed in the opener, 10-8 in 11 innings, while Arcadia took the nightcap, 16-9. IC is now 2-1 on the season. Arcadia too an early 3-0 lead but needed three in the ninth to extend the game. Ithaca regained the lead in the top of the 11th on a two-run home run by Garret Callaghan with Riley Brawdy on base. John Griffin finished off the game with a perfect 11th to earn the win. Arcadia jumped out to another lead but unlike game one, the Bombers did not live up to their name. It was all Arcadia from in the middle inings as the Knights scored 14 runs over the next three innings to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 16-6 lead after six innings. The Bombers also scored twice in the sixth on a two-run double from Brawdy.

Joe Valenti tossed a five-hit shutout and Jason Sanfilippo drove in two runs to lift the Misericordia to a 2-0 win over SUNY-Brockport, Sunday afternoon in Union, NJ. Valenti faced just two batters over the minimum as the Cougars turned two double plays and picked a runner off second. Misericordia scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Brock Bollinger drew a lead-off walk and Connor Maryniak was hit by a pitch one out later. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and came home on Sanfilippo's single up the middle.

Top-ranked Salisbury erased a late six-run deficit to beat St. John Fisher 9-8, then busted out with three home runs to squash the Cardinals 13-1 and sweep the Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. The Cardinals drew first blood in the top of the second inning as Luke Duffy went deep to center for a solo home run and ioncreased the early lead to 4-0. Salisbury started their comeback bid in the seventh down 7-1. In the bottom of the ninth, Cameron Hyder punched a single into center to lead off, then Luke Weddell and Kavi Caster both legged out infield hits to load the bases. Danny Sheeler came up next and watched four pitches sail out of the zone for the walk-off walk to complete the comeback. it was a difent story in the nightcap as Salisbury was the teram to buils 1 7-1 win. No comeback was in the Card-inal-s for SJF as the Sea Gulls won by a dozen runs.

No 14. Lynchburg Zack Potts struck out nine and earned the win in the 16th-ranked Hornets 4-2 win over Eastern University Sunday afternoon. Lynchburg also beat Eastern 14-0 in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Starting first baseman Josh Gjormand led the Hornets with two RBI in the first game. He gave Lynchburg a 4-2 lead in the 8th with an RBI triple. The Lynchburg bullpen supported Potts with three scoreless innings by freshman Logan Tappman and senior Jack Bachmore. The veteran notched his first save of the season. In Game 2, the Hornets showcased their ability on both sides of the ball shutting out the Eagles 14-0. 2022 ODAC Rookie of the Year Nick Mattfield recorded the start and the win only allowing three hits through five innings. He sat down eight Eagles in the process. A majority of Lynchburg's offense came in the 2nd inning where the Hornets scored five runs ignited by freshman Mason McDowell's first-collegiate hit, which was an RBI double that scored Collins. McDowell led the team with three RBI and went 3-4 in his first-career start.

Kean made it seven in a row with a tidy 3-1 win over SUNY Brockport on Sunday afternoon. Kean (7-1) took the lead for good in their half of the third as Caleb Rodriguez hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice and later scored on a Christian Pellone double. Kean added insurance in the fifth with a similar results as Kyle Adorno scored on a two out RBI hit from Pellone.

Nick Kosmetatos struck out 11 in seven blank innings, allowing just two hits, as Benedictine finished opening weekend with a 6-0 shutout of Knox at Millikin. Scoreless into the seventh inning, Ryan Doubek drove home a run with a fielder's choice while another scored on an error. Four runs in the eighth left no doubt. Andrew Tenison singled home two, Alex Cameron logged an RBI single and an error capped the frame. Benedictine finished with 11 hits as Tenison, Peter Turelli and Kevin Bushnell all posted a pair. The pitching staff finished with 15 strikeouts as Dan Dombrowksi and Nick Shelton both worked a scoreless inning striking out a pair. The win marked the 150th for head coach Adam Smith at Benedictine. Smith is in his eighth season at Benedictine. In a late game, four Millikin pitchers combined for a one hitter in a 6-1 win over Knox. Matt Wilson was the winning pitcher throwing six and one-thirds inning allowing one earned run on five walks while recording nine strikeouts. After battling his control in the second inning, Wilson struck out five of the six batters he faced in the third and fourth innings. Drew Sutton threw two-thirds of hitless innings with two strikeouts. Landon Johnson pitched one inning without allowing a hit. Aaron Agee pitched the final inning for Millikin.

The bats were out in full force for Penn State Harrisburg during the team's doubleheader sweep of Ferrum on Sunday afternoon.The Lions earned a 17-10 victory in the opener before closing out the weekend with a 20-4 win in the nightcap. The Lions (2-1) racked up 18 hits, including seven extra-base knocks, in a 17-10 win in Sunday's opener. Nick Fitzgerald turned in a strong start en route to earning the victory on the mound, while Dallas Hite, Drew Sassaman, and Lucas Floyd all had three-hit outings. Penn State Harrisburg (3-1) followed up a blistering offensive performance in game-one with an even wider margin of victory in a 20-4 win over Ferrum (3-5) in the final game of the weekend. Carlos Irizarry hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, while Parks racked up five RBI. Starter Fisher Druck earned the first win of his career on the rubber.

Moravian team split a pair of games at Lake Myrtle Park Sunday in the Greyhounds first day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational as the Blue & Grey defeated John Jay, 22-1, before falling to the University of Dubuque, 15-0, in a pair of games shortened to seven innings by the tournament's run-rule. In game one, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.and never looked back. It was the same but opposit in game two. The Spartans scored six times in the bottom of the first inning for the only runs the team needed.

Nick Cergol blasted a dramatic three-run home run to give Plattsburgh State a late lead over SUNY Maritime and a 4-3win to the Cardinals. Maritime won 3-1 in game two. Plattsburgh received strong starts from Sean Malamud and Chris Santic as well during the day, as they opened the season with a split.

In the Madison Avenue Challenge, senior Jimmy Finnerty knocked out a walk off two run homer to spark a 15-14 come from behind victory for the FDU-Florham against Saint Elizabeth in today's opener, but was upended in the second match of the day against Drew University, 20-2. FDU-Florham tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning before the Eagles swung its bats for five runs in the top of the eighth inning. With their backs against the wall, the Devils surged for six runs in bottom of the ninth inning and walked off the contest on Finnerty's ball over the fence to take the victory over their cross-street rival. Graduate student Tyler McCulluch reached a milestone achievement as his RBI single in the bottom of the sixth was the 100th hit of his FDU baseball career. The Drew Rangers (4-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the top of the sixth inning and closed out the game scoring 11 unanswered runs to seal the victory.

Oberlin surrendered a pair of runs late in game one to lose 3-2 but bounced back with a 4-3 win in game two to earn a season-opening split against the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Sunday afternoon at Dill Field. In the game-two win, Oberlin was led by a pair of Max's as Max Anastasio went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Max Wassarman was simply sensational out of the Yeomen bullpen for 4.2 innings. In game one, the Yeomen were clinging to a 2-1 lead all the way until the eighth inning as Yeomen ace Vince Dolcemaschio was simply sensational for eight innings, retiring the first 12 batters he faced until an infield single led off the fifth. Oberlin had runners on base in each of the sixth and seventh innings but came up empty in its efforts to add some insurance runs and that ultimately proved costly in the end. In the eighth inning, pinch hitter Chase Armstrong came off the bench and roped a two-out two-run single into right field to give ONU the lead. The Yeomen would go down quietly in the eighth and the ninth to allow the Polar Bears to pull off the comeback heist.

Stevenson split their home opener doubleheader with Ursinus. The games marked the first contests on the new Owings Mills East campus baseball field.The first game featured back-and-forth action with the Bears scoring three runs in the seventh to seal the win, 10-8. The Mustangs allowed only a single hit in the final frame to grab their first win of the 2023 season, 16-2.

On Sunday morning at the Methodist Baseball Invitational, MIT picked up its first win of the season as the Engineers defeated DeSales by an 8-7 final at Armstrong-Shelley Field. MIT built an early lead but DeSales chipped away at the five-run lead with single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and headed to the bottom of the ninth trailing MIT by an 8-6 margin. Sophomore Jimmy Moore came on for the save for the Engineers and struck out Joey Vaccaro to start the frame. The Bulldogs eventually added a run on a bases-loaded walk before Moore struck out the final two batters to secure the victory and his first career save.

Ramapo split a non-conference doubleheader in their season opener this afternoon on the road at St. Joseph's College Long Island. The Roadrunners took game one, 7-3, while the Golden Eagles won game two, 8-0. In game one, the Roadrunners were down 2-0 heading into the fifth inning before Jason Cuba ignited the offense as the Roadrunners took the opener. In game two, five Golden Eagle hits aided by a Ramapo defensive miscue led to a quick 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first as SJLI cuised to the win. SJLI starter senior Anthony Cinquemani earned the win allowing just one hit with two strikeouts in three innings of work.

Hood's offense came through in the second game of a doubleheader against visiting Franciscan in a 9-3 win. The Barons shut out Hood in game one 1-0, despite the Blazers' pitching staff allowing just six hits. The first game was an old-fashioned pitchers duel with Franciscan coming out on top. Baron's starter Jacob Watson pitched seven stellar innings with two strikeouts and a walk. He just faced 23 batters while using less than 90 pitches to secure his first win of the season. In the nighcap, Declan Sullivan started game one for the Blazers, allowing only three hits in four shutout innings. Colby Childs gave up one hit in a scoreless fifth inning. Mason Sawyers threw 1.1 innings, but was responsible for the only run to score in the seventh inning, taking the loss. Aaron Heller limited the damage, recording the last two outs in the seventh inning.

USMMA recorded a pair of wins against Russell Sage College to notch its second doubleheader sweep in as many days. The Mariners (4-0) rode their offense to a 14-6 victory against the Gators (0-2) in game one before a game two pitchers' duel ended with a 3-2 walk-off triumph. In the opener, senior Jared Chambers finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and five RBI to lead the Mariners. Sophomore Jacob Syversen allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out five in 4.2 innings for the victory. In the nightcap, junior Kellen Brown broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off triple and finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.Freshman Caden Pierce earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of classmate Kade Frazier, who had six strikeouts in 5.0 innings of two-run ball.

Scranton (1-1) split a pair of contests with Lycoming (1-4) and Swarthmore (2-0) to open the 2023 season on Sunday at The Ripken Experience in Aberdeen. Scranton notched a 14-3 victory over Lycoming to open the day before dropping a 10-9 heartbreaker to Swarthmore. The Royals got on the board with a three-run third inning and never looked back en route to a 14-3 win over the Warriors on Sunday. Swarthmore took the lead for good with a six-run seventh inning and despite a valiant comeback effort by the Royals, the Garnet prevailed with a 10-9 victory on Sunday.

doubleheader, with the second victory coming in dramatic
fashion.

Junior Tillman Butler hit a game-winning, walk-off solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Hampden-Sydney to a thrilling 4-3 non-conference home win past Franklin & Marshall on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Butler was pinch-hitting for the Tigers (5-1) and promptly slammed his solo shot over the fence in left center field. Junior Lucas Burnette added two RBIs, while senior captain Ryan Boyce ad one RBI for the hosts, as well. Sophomore Gavin Gregory gained the pitching win in relief against the visiting Diplomats (1-4)—the Garnet & Grey sweeping the two games played over the weekend.

On a brisk afternoon, after a delay due to temperature concerns, New Jersey City hosted its first home game of the season at it's home away from home — Caven Point Field — on Sunday, Feb. 12, and took on Haverford College. After a near-four hour game that saw 24 combined runs, NJCU defeated the Fords 17-7 with a display of explosive offense. Ricky Voss had himself a career day, as the graduate student posted a career-high five hits and is now just 12 hits shy of being the 11th player in program history to join the 150 hit club. Along with hitting his sixth-career NCAA home run today, Josh Hernandez is now 6-for-8 to open the season with four RBIs and eight runs scored. Additionally, Hernandez has not allowed an earned run since March 31, 2022, against St. Elizabeth University, extending the streak to 15.1 consecutive innings.

Maryville was victorious, 4-3 and 16-12, in both ends of the doubleheader on Sunday to complete the sweep against Hanover at Scotland Yard. The Scots are 9-0 to begin 2023, marking their best start to a season since at least 2012. MC played six hours and 27 minutes of baseball today, with the nightcap wrapping up in four hours and four minutes, the longest game of the season for the Scots. Hunter Thaxton was the hero for Maryville in the game two marathon. With the game tied 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the righty hit a go-ahead grand slam, putting the Scots up 12-8. Game one was less thrilling than the back half of the twin bill, with MC winning just 4-3. After going scoreless through the first five, the Scots picked up three runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh to punt the Panthers. 

Muhlenberg opened the 2023 season with a doubleheader split at St. Mary's (Md.). The Mules took the opener, 4-3, behind tremendous pitching from senior Quinn Rovner, and dropped the nightcap, 15-5. Rovner pitched six innings without allowing an earned run to pick up his eighth career win. The lone run scored off of him came in the first on back-to-back infield errors, and he allowed just one runner to reach scoring position after that. Rovner gave up only two singles and fanned four. He did hit two batters and walk one in his final two innings, but he erased all three runners, one on a pickoff and the others on two of three inning-ending double plays turned by the middle-infield combo of shortstop Jonathan Toth and second baseman Nick Belli. The Mules took the early lead in the opening frame of the nightcap but the Seahawks scored in each of their first four turns at bat, however, to open up a 6-1 lead and blow out the game open in the bottom of the inning, plating nine runs.

MCLA kicked off the 2023 season in style scoring 21 runs and pitching a pair of shutouts enroute to an opening day sweep over Yeshiva today at Silver Lake Park. The Trailblazers rolled past the Macabees in game one 11-0 before taking game two by a score of 10-0. Brian Rosario (W, 1-0) earned the win for MCLA pitching three perfect innings, striking out five. Aidan Brett (2 IP, 3 K's), Garrett Brunette (1 IP, 1 K) and Givhans (1 IP, 3 K's) all combined for the shutout. Rob Correia (W, 1-0) scattered 3 hits and stuck-out three in 3 innings pitched to earn his first win of the season. Jaden Palumbo (2 IP, 2K's), Nate Morse (1 IP, 1 K) and James Sneyd (1 IP, 2 K's) combined for the shutout.

Senior Hayden Snelsire tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener with nine strikeouts as Randolph-Macon swept a doubleheader from Alvernia on Sunday afternoon. Snelsire dominated on the mound. He allowed a pair of singles and one walk in seven innings. Senior lefty Brennan Tyznar took the mound with two on and two away in the fifth in game two and coaxed a groundout to keep the game tied at 3-3. Sophomore Bere Bauers earned the win in relief, going three scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and five strikeouts. Junior Cole Stamm pitched the ninth and worked out of trouble to strand a pair in the ninth to record his second save with a pair of strikeouts.

No. 21 Shenandoah completed its weekend Sunday with a 3-1 non-league victory over Marymount. Shenandoah (7-0) scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings to dispatch the Saints (3-2). Graduate student Ryan Clawson drove in the game-winning run with one out in the sixth on a single up the middle to bring home Pearce Bucher from second. Bucher had led off the frame with a single to left and was sacrificed to second by Haden Madagan.

Franklin got their 2023 campaign underway on Sunday with two games against the Cardinals of Saint Mary's (Minn.) to start off their Florida trip. The story of the day was the Franklin (2-0) pitching staff, as they kept the Cardinal (0-2) offense in check to take a pair of one-run games by scores of 3-2 and 1-0. The opener saw Dylan Sprong go the distance in his first career start, striking out nine batters on the afternoon. Franklin got a home run from Sean Sullivan and an RBI base hit from Anthony Smith before Tysen Lipscomb drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double. Lipscomb had the game-winning hit in the second contest, singling in AJ Sanders for the game's lone run. Matthew Johnson (1-0) got the start and struck out six over 4.2 innings and Sam Peck picked up his first career save with 2.1 scoreless frames.

Case Western Reserve scored a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning to earn a 5-3 win over Chicago and claim a split of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. With the win, the Spartans and the Maroons each conclude the opening weekend of their respective seasons with a 2-2 record. Sophomore right fielder Nick Harms finished the game three-for-four with two doubles, two runs scored, a run batted in, and a walk, while stealing a pair of bases. Through the first four games of the year, he is hitting .389 with six extra base hits, including five doubles and a home run. Sophomore catcher Jay Smith added a two-for-four day at the plate with an RBI.

Pomona-Pitzer split their makeup doubleheader against SCIAC opponent Redlands with a 4-1 loss and a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at The Yard. Redlands got the lead in the bottom of the fourth and added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to push the deficit to three runs with the Sagehens coming to their last at-bats. Pomona-Pitzer had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the ninth after they loaded the bases but the Redlands closer got Bedrosian to pop up on the infield as the Bulldogs took game one of the series. In game two, the Bulldogs jumped ahead in the bottom of the eighth off of a wild pitch and forced the Sagehens to play their final at-bats. The Sagehens managed to get a runner on third and ended up scoring the tying run off of a wild pitch with Caleb Millikan putting the Sagehens on top with a solo home run. The Bulldogs went 1,2,3 in the ninth as the Sagehens and Bulldogs split the doubleheader at the Yard.
