Second round of conference tournaments start today

Third-seeded Messiah College got a complete game from Steven Ridings in an 8-2 win over second seeded Alvernia Thursday evening in game two of the Commonwealth Conference Baseball Championships at Santander Stadium.  Ridings fired 150 pitches and struck out a career-high 12 to improve to 4-3 on the season. Top seeded Widener defeated Lebanon Valley 5-2 in the other Commonwealth tournament game.

Senior third baseman Travis Miller hit two home runs to help lead Thomas More to a 15-10, win over Saint Vincent in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Miller led the team at the plate as he was three-for-four with two home runs, three runs batted-in and and two runs scored.

Senior shortstop Cody Pace and first baseman Christopher Reynolds drove in three runs each as third-seeded Montclair State remained alive in the NJAC Baseball Championship with a 9-5 victory over top-seeded Rutgers-Camden at Campbell's Field. The Red Hawks avenged a pair of loss to the Scarlet Raptors earlier this season and snapped an eight-game winning streak by Rutgers-Camden.

Senior Tyler Peterson went 8-for-9 including four doubles and drove in five runs on the day to lead No. 12-ranked St. Thomas to a 13-6, 10-4 sweep of St. John's in Collegeville. The Tommies moved closer to securing their 12th consecutive conference regular-season title. They will lock up at least a share of the MIAC crown with one win in Sunday's twinbill at Augsburg or one loss by Bethel in its four games set for Sunday and Monday.

Penn State Behrend fell to Otterbein 10-5 at Fishbaugh Field. Freshman Peyton Ross went 3-for-5 on the day with a pair of runs scored to pace the Cardinal offense.

Sophomore pitcher Alex Weingarten threw seven scoreless innings allowing only two hits as Farmingdale State earned a 14-0 victory over Mount Saint Vincent in the first round of the Skyline Conference Playoffs. No. 5 Maritime plays No. 4 St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Friday in a single elimination game for the final spot in the four-team dooule elimination tournament.

Washington & Jefferson scored six runs in the first two innings and defeated Waynesburg 11-6 in PAC action at Ross Memorial Park.  The Presidents swept the season series from the Yellow Jackets for the fifth consecutive season.

Making its first postseason appearance in six years, Muhlenberg jumped out to a big lead and held on for a 9-5 victory, its first in the playoffs since 2003. The Mules touched up Tommy Bergjans, one of Division III’s top pitchers, for five runs in the first three innings, pounced on the Fords’ bullpen for four more in the eighth and then survived a furious late rally that saw the hosts bring the tying run to the plate.

he Springfield College baseball team picked up a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win on Thursday, beating visiting Emerson, 12-2 on Berry-Allen Field.

Springfield was led by the bats of Keith Cotnoir (Westhampton, Mass.), Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) and Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) in the win. Cotnoir drove in three runs while Hopkins and O'Leary drove in two each. Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) each tallied two hits.

Tyler Kelly (Absecon, N.J.) earned the win on the mound in his first collegiate start for the Pride. Kelly went five innings, allowing three hits and just one run while striking out four.
