Blue Jays fly away with wins

The Berczek brothers combined for the would-be winning run in the sixth as Marymount went on to defeat No. 12 Frostburg State for the second time this season. Stephen Berczek was involved in both of the Saints' runs. An error on Berczek's steal of second allowed the first run to score and Berczekscored on David Berczek RBI single.

Senior righthander Tyler Dauer recorded his school record-tying third shutout of the season as he pitched Texas-Dallas to a 1-0 home win over Mary Hardin-Baylor to open an three-game ASC series.
Dauer made quick work of the Cru, needing just 92 pitches in a game that took less than two hours to complete. He struck out six UMHB batters, with no walks, and scattered six hits. Dauer became the first UTD pitcher to record three shutouts in a season in more than a decade, joining former Comets Joseph Wollscheid (2002) and Kevin McKnight (2004), who also accomplished the feat.

Visiting Farmingdale State swept a pair of non-conference games at Keystone’s Christy Mathewson Field, defeating the Giants 5-1 in the opener before claiming a 5-4 decision in the nightcap. The Rams have now won four in a row after starting out the season 2-8.

Bethel and Augsburg returned to Hargis Park to finish the last two innings of a suspended game. Bethel led 8-2 heading into the final two frames and what looked like a win for the Royals quickly unraveled as Augsburg plated two in the eighth and four more in the ninth to knot the score. Grant Anderson's home run ended the game as the outfielder had his second game winning hit this season.

Drew rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, and after a walk-off hit by sophomore Tommy Broyles in the 10th inning, topped Moravian 5-4 in the Landmark Conference series opener at Doc Young Field. Down 4-2 and faced with their last three outs in the ninth, the Rangers got the leadoff hitter on base, manufactured a run and Bobby Miskura followed with the game-tying RBI single.

No. 3 UW-Whitewater used a pair of strong pitching performances and solid offense for a doubleheader sweep over UW-Superior in the WIAC opener for both teams at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.  The Warhawks took the first game by a 9-1 count, then posted a 7-2 triumph in the second.

Ripon couldn't have begun conference play in better fashion, as they swept a doubleheader against St. Norbert. The Red Hawks won the first game 7-6 on a walk-off single by Jake Reinke, before winning the nightcap behind a pitching gem from reigning Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Year Marshall Zahn.

In the inaugural battle for the I-90 Cup, Penn State Behrend defeated Fredonia State, 10-1 in non-conference action to notch the first-ever claim to the trophy. Behrend made use of the big inning, scoring six in the second and four more six innings later. David Boehme drove in a career-high three runs and scored twice for the Lions.

In the opening games of its NEWMAC season, MIT had timely hitting and strong pitching that led to a doubleheader sweep of Springfield as the Engineers took 6-3 and 13-1 decisions over the Pride. Senior Parker Tew hit a pair of home runs in game one, while freshman Austin Filiere smacked a grand slam in the nightcap to lead the way.

The first win for Johns Hopkins at Babb Field was not an easy one for the Blue Jays, as the Jays rallied from a three run deficit in the eighth to stun the visiting Dickinson Red Devils, 10-8. After the Red Devils put up a four spot in the top-half of the eighth, Johns Hopkins added five to their totals and a 1-2-3 save to wrap up the win.

Top ranked Salisbury used a big first inning to help earn a 12-7 victory over Christopher Newport in CAC action. The Sea Gulls did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard, tallying five runs and batting around the lineup in the top of the first inning.

Alvernia scored five runs in the third inning of game one on its way to a 6-1 win over Stevenson only to see the Mustangs come back with two runs in the last inning of the nightcap for a 5-4 win and a split of the Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.

Washington College jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held off a furious McDaniel rally to post an 11-7 victory at Preston Field in a Centennial Conference game. The Shoremen improve to 4-0 in the Centennial Conference for the first time since 1998 and for the third time in program history. The 1994 team also started conference action at 4-0.

A trio of players recorded three hits apiece, including senior Rob Bochetti who also drove in three runs, as Johnson & Wales fended off a late Wentworth rally, winning 10-6 in a non-conference contest played at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Complex.

Tim Mulvey tossed a complete game in his first start of the season to help the Presidents' earn a 2-1 win at Westminster (Pa.). Mulvey was in total contol until the ninth where a hit batter took away the shutout bid. The southpaw, who entered the day having thrown just 5.2 innings over five relief appearances, worked all 9.0 innings, scattering eight hits and giving up just the one earned run while striking out eight.

Cody Hanke hit three home runs and drove in 10 runs to power the No. 7 UW-Stevens Point Pointers to a sweep of UW-Stout by scores of 12-0 and 12-2 in the team's opening WIAC doubleheader of the season at University Field. UWSP's 24 runs and 30 hits were the team's most in a doubleheader since the Pointers tallied 29 runs on 30 hits in a sweep of UW-Stout in Menomonie on May 3-4, 2014.

Junior Michael Kendall tallied a two RBI pinch hit while classmate Richie Ferguson provided four relief innings of shutout ball as No. 6 Kean used a breakout seventh inning to down William Paterson, 9-2. The Cougars have now won nine straight and remain undefeated in the NJAC standings.

Texas Lutheran rolled to its fifth straight SCAC win, defeating the Mountaineers 16-1. The Bulldog offense plowed its way to 16 runs on 22 hits, and got a 5-for-6 performance from Keaton Bohrmann. The junior third baseman scored four runs and drove in a pair. One of his five hits went for two bases. The rest were singles.  Texas Lutheran pounded out seven extra-base hits on the day.

No. 13 Misericordia continued to swing a hot bat, sweeping a doubleheader with King's at Mangelsdorf Field. The Cougars picked up an 8-4 victory in the opener and a dominating, 10-1, victory in the nightcap.

With one swing of the bat Rutgers-Camden sophomore shortstop Pedro Perez changed the complexion of an early-season showdown between two of the top teams in the NJAC. Perez drilled a two-run home run over the right field fence, sparking the Scarlet Raptors to a three-run rally that lifted Rutgers-Camden over Rowan, 4-2, in the opener of a home-and-home series with the Profs. The victory was the fifth straight for the Scarlet Raptors who keep pace with Kean at the top of the NJAC standings.

Salem State took advantage of five hits, two balks and two hit batsmen to score six runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-6 victory over Southern Maine in a non-conference game at Central Campus Baseball Field. The win extended the Vikings' winning streak to five games, and improved their overall record to 9-5.  The Huskies dropped their third game in the last four to slip to 9-6 overall. Senior Kevin Carens paced the Vikings' 17-hit attack going 5 for 6 with four runs scored and three RBI.

In NJAC action New Jersey City defeated Rutgers-Newark 11-9. New Jersey City trailed Rutgers-Newark 6-1 after five innings and 7-5 through seven before the Gothic Knights scored four times in the eighth inning and added two more in the ninth to pull in front 11-7. The Raiders scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth and with two outs had the tying runs in scoring position but Delio Coutinho came in to get the 3-pitch strikeout save. Eric Giordano extended his on-base streak to 27 consecutive games.
