Southern Maine and St. Scholastica win streaks hit 15 games

Baruch won a dramatic 9-6 extra inning contest against Staten Island on a rainy and overcast Saturday afternoon at the CSI Baseball Complex. The Dolphins took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh, but Angel Acevedo came through with a two-out RBI single to score Mendoza to force extra innings. The two teams played into the 10th inning and the Bearcats won it on a walk-off three run homer by Edwin St. Hilaire.

Sophomore Kip Richard snapped a 6-6 tie in the 12th inning with a sacrifice fly and Southern Maine went on to defeat Plymouth State 8-6 in the nightcap of the teams' Little East Conference doubleheader at Panther Park on Saturday.  The Huskies took the first game by a score of 6-3. The sweep extends the Huskies' winning streak to 15 games.

Earlham completed a three-game sweep of Anderson, taking both games of the doubleheader 10-3 and 11-6 in HCAC action. This was the first HCAC sweep for Earlham since beating Rose-Hulman in a three-game set during the 2014 season.

St. Scholastica had another successful matchup on Saturday defeating Martin Luther 12-0 in game one and 10-0 in game two, taking advantage of the 10-run-rule and winning in seven innings in both games. The Saints limited the Knights to three hits on the day, one in the opener and two in the nightcap.

Elmira earned a doubleheader split against Empire 8 Conference foe SUNY Canton at historic Dunn Field. Elmira used two first-inning runs and exceptional pitching to earn a 2-1 triumph in the opening game. In the second tilt, five errors hindered the Purple and Gold during their 1-0 setback.

Keystone’s offense came alive as the Giants scored 26 runs in a 16-4, 10-3 sweep of Cairn in a CSAC doubleheader at Christy Mathewson Field. Keystone starting pitchers Miguel Reyes and Tyler Widitz both earned wins for the Giants. Widitz took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of Saturday’s nightcap before giving up a one-out single to break up the no-hit bid.

Guilford swept an ODAC doubleheader from visiting Bridgewater. The Quakers won 8-7 and 7-4. The Quakers improved to 7-10 in the ODAC and remained in contention for one of six Tournament berths,  a half game out of the final spot. The Eagles are 6-13 in league play.

Keuka split at Penn St.-Berks in a NEAC doubleheader. Keuka took the opening game 6-4, but fell in the nightcap 12-0. Dakota Skinner continued his hot run with four hits on the day for the Wolves. Jake Redding and Dave Nuzzo each added two hits on the day with a double. Bryan Johnsen earned his fourth win on the season, going six innings in game one. Freshman Dave Verrett struck out a batter in the seventh to earn his third save of the season. In game two, Dylan Gallagher pitched a complete game three-hitter to give Penn State-Berks a split on the day.

Eric Del Prado went 3-for-5 on the day. He was one of eight Bearcats with at least one hit, as Willamette outhit Whitworth, 14-12.

Eric Del Prado smacked a grand slam home run over the center field fence and finished the game with seven RBIs to lead Willamette to a 13-6 victory over Whitworth in the winner's bracket game at the 2017 NWC Tournament at Roy Helser Field. Willamette moved into the first of a possible two championship games on Sunday. The Bearcats will meet Linfield, which defeated Whitworth, 8-3, and Pacific Lutheran, 6-5, as the sole team out of the elimination bracket.

Plattsburgh State won the opening game, 4-2, and lost the second game, 7-3, in a SUNYAC doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta at Damaschke Field. The Cardinals go to 8-19 overall and 2-13 in the league, while the Red Dragons are 14-15 and 5-9. Plattsburgh State is in the middle of a six-game road slate.

Wisconsin Lutheran celebrated Senior Day with its fourth straight win and first NACC series sweep of the season by defeating cross-town rival MSOE by scores of 10-2 and 6-4 at Neumann Family Field. The Warriors used big innings early in each game with late offense as well to seal the sweep.

WPI split a pair of games with Springfield and secured the NEWMAC West division title for the third consecutive season. The Pride earned a 4-3 win over WPI before falling to the Engineers, 11-4, in the second leg of the doubleheader at Berry-Allen Field. The Engineers are in the NEWMAC clubhouse while the other seven teams are in action tomorrow. As a result of the division crown, WPI is guaranteed at least the No. 2 seed and, pending tomorrow's three-game set between Wheaton and MIT, could claim the top seed.

Hope took both games of its doubleheader against Trine, winning the first game 4-2 and the second game 15-7. The team flipped the script on Trine, who had taken both games of a doubleheader between the two teams in Angola on Friday. The Flying Dutchmen moved their record to 19-13 overall, with a 12-8 mark in the MIAA. The team currently resides alone in third place in the conference after breaking a tie with Trine.

Coe scored 18 runs on 23 hits in the doubleheader Saturday, as the Kohawks swept the season series with Simpson. The Kohawks won 10-7 and 8-1. In the nightcap, Grant Henning was a single shy of the cycle as he finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Ithaca extended its winning streak to nine straight with a 6-0 non-conference shutout victory at New Paltz at Loren Campbell Field. Andrew Baily, Sam Little and Josh Savacool hit home runs for Ithaca.

Starters Dan Mantoni and Matt Tulley each went seven plus innings and had seven strikeouts to carry UMass-Boston to a 3-1 and 7-1 Little East Conference sweep of Keene State at Owl Athletic Complex. The two senior righty's were solid all afternoon, as the Beacons continue to keep pace in the top-3 in the Little East Conference standings. In the opener, Mantoni went 7.1 innings and allowed just the one run on five hits, while also surrendering a mere four walks.  Bobby Tramondozzi collected his sixth save of the season after going the final 1.2 innings. Tulley's line was almost identical to Mantoni's in the nightcap.  Through seven complete, Tulley allowed one run on seven hits, and walked five batters. Joe Maguire finished-off the Owls for the conference sweep as he fanned three, while only allowing three hits, all singles, over the final two innings.

Sophomore Danny Hayden allowed one run over seven in a complete-game victory to help the Nichols salvage a split with Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Nichols Baseball Field. Gordon won game one 13-2 and Nichols tooke game two 2-1.

Ryan Orr seems to have Olivet's number. After tossing a no-hitter a year ago on the road at Olivet, Orr put together a three-hit shutout as Kalamazoo won 3-0 in the first game of an MIAA doubleheader. Orr struck out 11 Comets in seven innings of work and the Hornets backed their ace with runs in the first, third and sixth inning. Game two proved to be quite the opposite of the first as the Hornet bats came to life recording 20 hits on the way to a 13-5 win.

An 11th inning walkoff win in game two of the weekend series failed to carry over for Loras, as the Duhawks split the doubleheader and dropped the weekend series to the Dutch, winning 7-6 in in the opener and 13-10 in the finale. Senior Nolan Ritter combined to go 5-for-8 at the plate and scored three runs on the day.

For much of the recent Concordia (Wisc.) winning streak, the talk has been about the team's offense and ability to put up runs. While the Falcons continued to do that on Saturday, the pitching staff continued its recent run of success with a pair of shutouts in a NACC sweep over Lakeland. The Falcons took the opener 15-0 before winning game two, 8-0.
