New England schools get wins on Saturday

Pacific Lutheran joined the ranks of upset games as the team
closed out its Texas trip in style on Saturday afternoon,
winning both ends of a doubleheader against 23rd-ranked
Texas Lutheran at Katt-Isabel Field. The Lutes took the
opener 5-2 and claimed a wild 17-9 victory in the nightcap.

No. 6 Babson scored six runs over the final three innings to rally for an 8-6 victory over No. 2 Trinity (Texas) in game two of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at the Trinity Baseball Complex. With the win, Babson evens its record at 1-1, while Trinity falls to 8-1. Senior Sean Harrington went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI, while sophomore Thomas Lapham finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored to lead the Beavers' 13-hit attack. Senior Matthew Valente and junior Jack Ward both doubled and finished with two hits apiece, and sophomore Sean Burychka added a pair of singles in the win.

Sophomore Ryan Leung beat out a two-out infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning, to earn #14 UMass Boston a walk-off win over Stevens on Opening Day at Monan Park.  Leung's first hit of the season capped off a huge comeback win, that was anchored by the Beacons' pitching staff. Chris Ducko worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a balk. Noah Mader worked a walk and the Beacons loaded the bases on a possible double play ball that was mishandled. After Ducko was tagged out on a failed suicide squeeze, Leung hit a soft chopper on the right side and barely beat out the throw, to score Mader for the game-winning run. 

The No. 24-ranked Rhodes Lynx were able to win both contests in their doubleheader against No. 3-ranked Birmingham-Southern College. The Lynx took game one 10-2 and game two 3-1. The Saturday sweep marks 10 wins in a row for the Lynx.

Wabash opened the 2020 season by crushing eighth-ranked Heidelberg 15-1 on a cold and breezy afternoon game played at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield, Indiana.  The Little Giants (1-0) tied the school record for triples in a game with three while three pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts to tie for the second-most in a game by a Wabash team.

Kean exploded for 19 runs as they coasted past Haverford, 19-2 on a cold afternoon. Graduate student Kevin Stewart earned his third win of the young season as he tossed six innings allowing just two runs while fanning 10. He was one of 24 Cougars (6-2) who saw action in the contest.

Sophomore Matthew Dillard hurled a complete game, striking out 10 a 7-2 win for No. 20 Johns Hopkins over No. 7 Cortland. Sophomore right-hander Matthew Dillard became the de facto ace for the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in 2020 as the only remaining starter to throw at least 20 innings in 2019. Dillard hit a new level on Saturday evening, earning that title with a dominant performance against SUNY Cortland. The sophomore twirled a complete game, striking out a career-high 10 batters along the way, allowing just two runs, both unearned, in the victory.

No. 15 Cal Lutheran took two of three games from the No. 1 team in the nation as the Kingsmen and Chapman Panthers split their doubleheader. CLU won the first game 8-3 while Chapman took the second 6-3. The Kingsmen opened SCIAC play by winning all three of their series. CLU improved to a conference record of 7-1 and are 12-1 overall.

In both contests of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, it was the seventh innings that decided the games for Randolph-Macon as the Yellow Jackets earned a pair of wins against The College of New Jersey. In the first game, the Yellow Jackets blasted out of a 3-3 tied with a four-run seventh inning, while in the nightcap, R-MC used six runs in the seventh inning to double-up the Lions 12-6.

Jake Andersen's first collegiate hit gave UW-Oshkosh the lead against a nationally ranked opponent during the second contest of the day as UW-Oshkosh split a pair of games to begin the 2020 season in Sauget, Ill. UW-Oshkosh (1-1) lost its season opener, 2-1, to North Park (Ill.) before coming back to defeat Concordia Chicago by an 8-5 score in the second game of the day. Concordia University Chicago (0-1) is ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com. In the victory over Concordia Chicago, UW-Oshkosh overcame a three-run, first-inning deficit by scoring twice in the top of the third frame and three times in the fourth. The Titans then added three insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Senior Antony Mantova belted a three-run walk-off home run on Saturday as nationally-ranked St. John Fisher began the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with an 11-8 win over Cabrini University. With the game tied and the winning run in scoring position for Fisher, Mantova stepped to the dish and uncorked a no-doubt-about-it shot that sailed well over 400 feet and cleared the fence to lift Fisher to the win. The Cardinals banged out 13 hits in the win with Brian Norsen leading the way with three base hits and a pair of RBI.

Transylvania opened up the doors at its new home with an indelible moment, defeating the No. 12 Denison Big Red 6-5 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark on a walk-off RBI single from Hudson Chastain. After the notable announcement made in the offseason that the Pioneers would play closer to campus and make the move from Marquard Field to Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the minor league Single-A Lexington Legends club, the Transylvania baseball team finally got to play a home game on Saturday at its new ballpark. Transylvania validated the wait, erasing two deficits against the nationally-ranked Big Red to set up the game-winning moment by the junior Chastain in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Pioneers improved to 2-2 on the season and claimed its second win against a top-25 ranked team with Saturday's scintillating victory.
