Big bats lead to Saturday wins

Alvernia (1-1) opened its 2021 season with a doubleheader split at Hood (1-1) on Saturday in non-conference action. Alvernia took game one with a 4-1 win, but fell in game two, 4-2.

Stevenson rapped 24 hits on the day to take a season opening doubleheader sweep. Hanover was even more offensive minded as they had 29 hits in a sweep of Defiance. Both these team also scored double digit runs in their Saturday wins.

Millikin improved to 4-0 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Hope at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois. Millikin won game one 7-3. The Big Blue jumped out to an early 3-0 when Frank Bryan blasted a three-run home run in the first inning. Millikin would score three more times in the fifth and one in the sixth. Hope scored in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Bryan would end the day 3-4 with a double and the home run. Kyle Kane, Tommy Shaw and Mason McGahey would all have RBI for the Big Blue. Adam Zuk picked up his second win of the season throwing five and one-third innings allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out six. Brent Beals pitched in the final inning and a third allowing no hits and recording three strikeouts. Spencer Cable led Hope going 2-5 with a triple and two RBI. Millikin took game two behind the stellar pitching of Caleb Buehrle who scattered six hits over eight scoreless innings while striking out seven. Jared Buzan pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts. Beals was the Millikin hitting star in game two going 2-4 with a double, home run and two RBI. Evan Maday had three hits including two doubles for Hope.

George Fox split a non-conference doubleheader against the Whitworth Pirates with an 8-3 win in game one and a 5-3 loss in game two. George Fox broke up a scoreless pitchers' duel in the third with three runs in the third. The Bruins loaded the bases with a single, a ground-rule double, and a walk before scoring on a balk, a single, and a sac fly to right. Whitworth got two runs across in the sixth, but the Bruins got both of those back, and then some, after batting through the order and plating five in their half of the sixth. A late Whitworth run in the eighth fell short and George Fox took the opener, 8-3. Sean Weise started the second game and punched out seven of the first nine Pirates he faced. Wiese had a perfect game into the fourth frame before Whitworth erased the Bruins' 1-0 lead with a two-run shot. The two teams cruised through the middle innings as Wiese and the Pirates' starter stayed locked in. In the sixth, the Bruins used an Emery Miller single and some crafty base running from Breyndon Nakamura to tied the game at 2-2. The Pirates plated three in the seventh, however, and finished the frame out to take a 5-3 win after the Bruins scratched one through in the seventh.

St. Norbert moved to 4-0 on the young 2021 season with a pair of impressive wins over College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foes Elmhurst and Wheaton at Lee Pfund Stadium. The Green Knights opened with a 14-2 rout of Elmhurst before claiming a hard-fought 6-5 win over Wheaton. The 4-0 start is just the third such mark in school history, joining 1998 and 2005. St. Norbert posted crooked numbers in each of its first four innings to put Elmhurst away early, scoring two runs apiece in the first, second and fourth and a big seven-run third. Against Wheaton, St. Norbert jumped out to a 2-0 and found themselves ahead 5-4 goin to the ninth. Neither team would score again until St. Norbert gained a valuable insurance run in the ninth on Jack's two-out single. Wheaton would get a two-out single to cut the deficit to one run but the potential tying run was thrown out at third base on the play to end the game.

NC Wesleyan pulled off a quality 7-2 win in the first game of their series with ODAC foe Randolph-Macon  on the road Saturday afternoon. Game two of the series was suspended in the 8th inning with the Bishops trailing 8-4.  Freshman 3B and leadoff hitter Tyson Bass led off the game with a solo home run to stake the Bishops to the early lead. Wesleyan added runs to take a 7-0 lead before the first RMC run in the sixth inning. Senior pitcher Derrick Carter (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Bishops tossing 5 and 2/3 innings allowing one run on 6 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Junior reliever Zach Woolard then threw an inning of relief allowing a hit and a run on 2 walks and 2 Ks.

Mount Aloysius opened up the 2021 season, on Saturday afternoon, when they traveled to play a doubleheader with Shenandoah. Shenandoah came into the matchup 13th-ranked team in the Week 2 edition of the D3Baseball.com Top 25 Poll. They began the season ranked 17th, before getting bumped ahead four spots. Pat Mahon made both of his hits count on the day, driving in one run in Game 1 and his spot scoring in Game 2, following his second hit. Seth Smith earned his first career victory as a Mountie. He allowed one run over 2.1 innings in relief. Another first, Cannon picked up his first career save in the game, as well. The Mounties split earned them their first-ever win against Shenandoah, in 14 tries. The win was their first against a ranked-opponent since they beat, #12 La Roche, during the 2016 AMCC tournament. It was their first regular season win against a ranked-opponent since beating, #11 Marietta, back on April 2, 2014.

The long-awaited return of baseball has come, and with it, a reason to celebrate. After dropping game one to the Valley Forge 9-6, the Defenders bounced back and took game two 16-7. With a new season ahead of them, the Defenders wanted to get off on the right foot, and early on in game one, it seemed like they might. Starting pitcher, Kegan Laman reached base safely on a fielder's choice and later scored on an error for the defenders first run of the season. Later in the opener, Laman struck out the second inning's final two batters, claiming the top spot at Clarks Summit for strikeouts in a career with 85. Joshua Knight pitched all seven innings in the win in the nightcap, striking out three along the way with four RBI to his name offensively. Kegan Laman had an excellent second game, going 5-6 with four RBI and a pair of doubles. Demetrius Williams notched his first career hit and RBI in the win.

The No. 14 ranked Webster team improved to 2-1 on the season here Saturday afternoon following a 5-3 victory over Wartburg in the opening game of the BSN Sports/Webster Classic at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.  Webster's win was aided by a five run sixth inning that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 run lead and also was able to make a winner out of the All-American graduate student pitcher Matt Mulhearn , who started for the second straight weekend against the Knights. With the win, Mulhearn, who has an 0.64 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 14 innings this season, moved into a tie with Dylan Dean Smith for second place on the school's all-time win list with 24 victories and moved within 10 strikeouts of the school's all-time career strikeout mark of 257, which is held by Isaac Behme (2012-15).

For the first time in 364 days, John P. McDowell Field was the site for Franklin College when the Grizzlies opened the 2021 season with a pair of games against the Manchester Spartans on Saturday afternoon. The opener saw the Spartans (1-1) take advantage of a wild Franklin (1-1) pitching staff to earn a 12-7 win. Game two saw the script get flipped with the Grizzlies using two big innings to take a 13-3 win in seven innings. Junior Nick McClanahan (1-0) made his first career start and dominated Manchester hitters. The Ryle, Ky.-native allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts over five innings of work. Hit 12 punch-outs are the most in a game by a Franklin pitcher since Hayden Cleveland fanned the same amount back on Feb. 27, 2016.

Washington and Lee opened the 2021 season with a 10-6 comeback win over Hampden-Sydney in game one of a doubleheader, before dropping game two, 8-0, on Saturday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. Trailing by a score of 6-2 through five and a half innings in game one, W&L (1-1, 1-1 ODAC) sophomore center fielder Mitchell Salvino got the rally started when he reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch. With a runner on third, first-year right fielder Mason Satterfield singled to right and then scored when junior designated hitter Jackson Gazin tripled down the right-field line. After a scoreless seventh, the Generals broke the game open with a five-run bottom of the eighth to take a 10-6 lead. The inning was highlighted by an two-run inside-the-park home run from sophomore left fielder Zach Perkins.

Visiting Washington College swept St. Mary's (Md.) to open the 2021 campaign, coming away with an 11-7 victory in the opener and a 9-2 triumph in the second game. Freshman Danny Sheeler belted a grand slam in his first career game to highlight game one and senior right-hander Nick Brauer tuned in a strong starting performance in the nightcap. Ryan Colbert (4-for-7, 2 BB, 3B) had two hits in eqach game for the Shoremen.

Elmhurst opened its 2021 season by splitting a pair of contests. The Bluejays opened the season with a 14-4 win over Wheaton College before falling 14-2 to St. Norbert. Bluejays used a pair of big innings to score a 14-4 win over Wheaton College in the 2021 season-opener. Elmhurst (1-1) took advantage of some early wildness by the Thunder in the opening frame of their opener to plate five runs on just one hit and then blew the game open in the fifth with an eight-run outburst.

Transylvania opened up the season on Saturday with a 7-0 win over the Bluffton Beavers at Legends Ballpark. Playing a modified conference-only schedule in the 2021 season, Bluffton and Transylvania each ushered in their respective seasons in Lexington with an afternoon doubleheader. Transylvania earned a stellar shutout victory in the Saturday opener. The teams waged a competitive second game that reached a 9-9 deadlock after nine innings before the game was halted to due to darkness. The teams are scheduled to make up the remainder of the second game at a time and date to be determined later in the season.

After two pitches in the bottom of the first, Christopher Newport had a 2-0 lead and never looked back on Saturday afternoon as Christopher Newport (2-1) defeated Virginia Wesleyan (0-5) in the 2021 Captains Park home opener, 8-2. Conner Clark led off by lacing a single over the shortstop and Jonathan Fisher followed, attacking the first pitch he saw and launching a towering two-run shot to left center field for his first career home run. While not quite all the Captains would need to win the game, the early onslaught set the tone for the offense which would go on to hammer 11 hits including three for extra bases. CNU scored one in the third, two more in the fourth, and rounded out the scoring with three in the bottom of the sixth. With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 2-1 on the season and has now won four straight home openers. In the 21 seasons under head coach John Harvell, the Captains are 18-3 in the first home game of the season.

Alma earned a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Wabash with wins of 4-0 and 11-6. The Scots move to .500 on the season with a 3-3 record. In game one, senior Dylan Dzendzel pitched a complete game shutout while giving up only four hits and striking out four. The Alma offense came through with some clutch two-out hitting to score some runs and take the win. In game two, the Scots' bats came alive with five different players having multiple hits and the team recording a total of 12 in the game. Jayden Drake also earned his first career win on the mound by throwing 8.1 innings.

Loras (1-1, 0-0 A-R-C) opened their 2021 campaign at Illinois College Saturday afternoon, seeing the Duhawks split the season-opening series. In game one of the day, the Duhawks trounced the Illinois College Blue Boys (1-3, 0-0 MWC) by a final score of 15-5, but would fall to the Augustana College Vikings (3-0, 0-0 CCIW) by a 6-1 margin. In the first matchup of the day against Illinois College, the Duhawks' bats were hot early and sustained through the ninth inning, with first baseman Max Cullen getting things going in the top of the first inning.
