Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton College (Ill.) Athletics Director Julie Davis has announced the hiring of Matt Husted as the head coach of the Thunder baseball program. Husted replaces Lee Driggers, who resigned in May after four years at the helm of the Thunder to take the head coaching position at East Texas Baptist University. Husted assumes a Wheaton program that posted a 22-18 record in 2012.

Davis says of the addition of Husted to the Wheaton program, “We are thrilled to have Matt Husted joining our staff.  His baseball credentials are first-rate, and he understands the impact athletics can have on developing the Christian character of our students.” She concludes, “His experience and competitive drive will continue to develop a culture of winning in our baseball program.”

Husted is a 1995 Cum Laude graduate of Miami University (Ohio) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications.

Husted comes to Wheaton from the University of Michigan, where he served a variety of roles from 2008 until May of 2012. In his time with the Wolverines, Husted served as Recruiting Coordinator, Catchers and Outfielders Coach and Bench Coach.

Prior to his tenure with Michigan, Husted served as an assistant coach at University of Toledo from 2003-2007. He served as a pitching coach, bench coach and recruiting coordinator in his time with the Rockets. Husted served one year (2002-03) as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University. From 1998 until 2002 he served a number of roles as an assistant coach at Ball State University. He spent the summer of 1998 working with Athletes in Action, coaching a team of collegiate baseball players that competed throughout Florida and South Africa. Husted began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Grace College (Ind.) in 1995, spending three years at the school.

Husted says of his hiring, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach Wheaton baseball. Wheaton is a wonderful institution with a tremendous reputation and is definitely one of the best Christian colleges in the country.” He adds, “Our team will be hard-working, passionate and honor God in all that we do. On the field, our guys will be aggressive and apply pressure to the other team in every way.”
