Freshman pitcher Derrick Mahlum put together a stellar start to his collegiate career and Curtis Wildung came up with the day's biggest hit as Pacific Lutheran opened the 2014 season with a doubleheader split against Concordia (Ore.) Monday at PLU Field. Concordia claimed a 5-3 win in the opener, but Mahlum followed with a 6.2 shutout innings and Wildung rocketed a home run to right field to give the Lutes the 1-0 victory in game two.
Howard Payne used a four-run sixth inning to defeat Southwestern 6-5 in the Yellow Jackets 2014 season opener Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park. Matthew Parks got the win despite allowing three runs in relief of Corey Howie. Parks struckout three and walked none.
Redlands opened its 2014 campaign on the road on Tuesday afternoon against Vanguard University, and despite getting on the board first, the Bulldogs fell to the Lions, 2-6. Leading the way at the plate for the Bulldogs were Christopher Scalisi and Kyle Wallau, each with two hits.
For six innings, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps held Master's scoreless. Over the last three innings, Master's scored five runs to defeat CMS 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Arce Field in the season-opener for CMS. Three CMS pitchers in senior Andor Kesselman, senior Chad Hadzinsky and junior John Rizzo combined to pitch five innings of shutout baseball. Sophomore Clayton Brock pitched a scoreless sixth inning but Master's put three runs on the board in the seventh inning against Brock to grab the lead. Masters added two runs in the ninth.
In other action Chapman defeated Cal State San Marcos 13-2 and Whittier fell to Concordia (Cal.) 7-5.
