Freshmen Dylan Royce and Mason Pechy both delivered strong pitching performances and Lakeland swept Maranatha Baptist Thursday afternoon. Royce threw a complete game as the Muskies won the first game 5-1, and Pechy worked into the seventh in an 8-5 win in the second game. Royce allowed three hits while striking out six and walking just one while going the distance for the first time in his collegiate career. He allowed a single run in the first inning and held the Sabercats to one hit after the first, retiring the last eight batters he faced and 19 of the last 21. Pechy allowed seven hits and five runs over 6.1 innings with three strikeouts. He gave way to Taylor Johann in the seventh, and the freshman induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded for his first save.

Strong pitching and great defense are a strong combination in baseball. That combo was on display as the Concordia (Wisc.) defeated UW-Oshkosh, 3-2, in non-conference action at Kapco Park. The Falcons used four different pitchers in the win, including starter Matthew Olig. Olig went 4.1 innings and allowed two runs while scattering four hits in his first career collegiate start. Niko Kutsulis ended up getting the win, by throwing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. As he has done all season, junior Scott Plachinski closed the door with his fourth save of the year. Plachinski came on with runners on first and second and one out in the eighth and recorded a double play on a flyout to left field to escape the jam. He then worked a scoreless ninth inning. The Falcons defense did not commit an error, and also were plenty busy as UW-Oshkosh didn't strike out once at the plate. Matt Luft paced the offense with three hits, including a double. Dan Ranieri added two singles and scored twice.

Elmhurst totaled 19 runs and 26 hits while sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from Wheaton (Ill.). Elmhurst improved to 10-8 overall and 4-1 in the CCIW with the wins. Wheaton slipped to 12-10 overall and 2-4 in the CCIW. The Bluejays banged out 14 hits in the victory while Austin MacMillan pitched seven strong innings from the mound. Matt Wilson led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with a run scored. James Wick collected three hits and drove in two while Ben Havel and A.J. Compton also recorded multi-hit games. MacMillan was solid from the mound, improving to 2-0 on the season with the win. He worked seven innings, allowing just four hits and two runs. He walked four while striking out one. Nathan Tovell pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning one.
Elmhurst completed the doubleheader sweep of Wheaton with a 10-5 win in game two. Elmhurst finished with 12 hits in the contest. Brandon Kressner, McReynolds, Wilson, Trey Compton and Evan Berliner each collected two hits apiece. Havel knocked in two runs while Compton drove in four on the grand slam. Kressner, McReynolds and Compton all scored two runs apiece. Daryl Rivera picked the up the victory for Elmhurst, improving to 2-3 on the season. He tossed six innings, allowing five runs and six hits while walking three and striking out three. Kiko Mari pitched three scoreless innings in relief to record the save, allowing just four hits while striking out one.
St. Olaf overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Northwestern (Minn.) 4-3 at Carlander Stadium. Ryan Iverson's RBI double in the seventh inning gave the Oles (7-10) their first lead. Iverson, Dylan Blake and Thomas Peterson had two hits apiece for St. Olaf in the win. Jesse Retzlaff allowed three runs in the opening two innings, but settled in with five straight scoreless frames on the way to the victory. He allowed five hits while striking out six, walking two and hitting three. Cameron Gray picked up a two-inning save with his two scoreless innings. Brett Reinhart was 2-for-4 for the Eagles (9-13).
