Carroll walks off, Wisconsin Lutheran wins late

Wisconsin Lutheran returned to the diamond late on Sunday night for the first time in 360 days and split a pair of games against Lawrence inside U.S. Bank Stadium. After dropping the first game by a score of 10-3, the Warriors held off a late Vikings rally for a 5-4 victory in game two.

The Carroll Pioneers used a walk off home run to spoil opening day for Concordia (Wis.) on Monday afternoon. The first run of the year was scored in the top of the first inning off a double from junior Kyle Kosobucki that scored junior Sean Tillmon from second base. The Falcons added to the lead in the fourth inning on a single off the bat of Drew Johnson to score Sean Tillman. The Pioneers tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and a triple in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs. Sean Tillmon broke the tie with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning that was able to score senior Sam Zarling. The Pioneers walked away with the victory with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the 10th inning.

Saint Mary's (Minn.) erupted for six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in cruising to an 8-2 win over St. Scholastica in the first game of their nonconference doubleheader at US Bank Stadium. Saint Mary's put up another six-run first in the nightcap, but the Saints would rally, grabbing 9-8 lead heading into the sixth inning when the game was halted due to time limit. The game will be completed on another day, if schedules allow.

After 366 days, the Houghton Highlanders kicked off the 2021 season with a bang. Houghton scored 28 runs in a season-opening doubleheader sweep of the Elmira Soaring Eagles on Monday afternoon, 14-5 and 14-6. In his first collegiate outing, Ryan Newtown picked up the win for the Highlanders, tossing four innings while striking out three and allowing only one hit. Hunter Kendall earned his first win of the year, going four innings while allowing only one hit and striking out six. Houghton rapped out 23 hits on the day, while Elmira accumulated nine. "It was great to pick up a pair of wins on opening day. We did a lot of things very well—we put together good at bats, drove the ball in key situations, played quality defense and ran the bases well, said Coach Brian Reitnour.

Cazenovia took down Wells as they outscored the Express 8-2 on Monday. With the win the Wildcats improve their record to 1-1 overall, while the Express drop to 1-1- overall. The Wildcats aggressiveness on the base paths got them on the scoreboard in the first inning. After sophomore Miguel Rivera stole second base, he would score from second when the express third baseman threw the ball away on a ground ball by junior Parker Wing. Wing would then make his way to third and eventually score on a pass ball. The Wildcats would make it 3-0 after a double by freshman Anthony Cretella scoring senior Joe Brisson. The Wildcats would add 4 more in the top of the 5th starting with a single by freshman Jack Lees to score 2 runs. Senior Kamm Cassidy would then get a base hit to score senior Nick Santoro. Cassidy would then steal second which allowed Lees to run home to make the game 7-0. The Wildcats would add another insurance run in the 6th inning when Santoro would double to score Cretella. Santoro would lead the Wildcats with 2 hits, while Lees finished with 1 hit, 2 RBIs, and 2 walks. At the top of the Wildcat line-up Rivera and Wing would each score 2 runs for Cazenovia. Freshman Cameron Ciampaglia picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 4 strong innings allowing 4 hits, 1 run, and 1 strike out. Sophomore Dawson Eckrich would take over in the 5th inning and would keep things rolling as he would allow just 2 hits, 1 run and struck out 2 batters.

Bethel earned an opening day sweep over Crown by identical scores of 7-1 Monday evening inside U.S. Bank Stadium. Joey Fredrickson had a heck of a night at the plate going 4-for-6 with a pair of extra base hits and driving in six runs. Marcus Krupke threw a gem in game one, surrendering one run in the seven-inning complete game effort. In Game one, a four-run first inning highlighted with a two-out two-RBI triple from James Woelfel got the Royals off and running. Krupke didn't allow a Crown runner past first until the fifth with a one-out double. Jordan Krupke and Joey Fredrickson added insurance runs in the sixth with Krupke scoring on a passed ball and Fredrickson doubling to left driving in Caleb Brandt. Crown added a run in the sixth before Marcus Krupke shut the door in the seventh ending the game with his fifth strikeout. In the night cap, doubles by Caleb Brandt and Fredrickson sparked a three-run opening inning for the Royals who played as the visitors in game two. Crown put up its only run in the first before being shut down by the Royals pitching staff the rest of the way. Bethel added runs in the second and fifth with a RBI single from Fredrickson and RBI double from Marcus Krupke. Fredrickson completed his six RBI night with a two-RBI single to center in the sixth. Starter Matthew Bohlke picked up the win in game two giving up one run in four innings of work. Two innings of relief from Peyton Gallagher and one inning from Blake Williams saw the Bethel bullpen allow one runner on through the final three innings. That coming via a walk.
