Down early to No. 11 Rowan University, Penn State Abington battled to a 9-8 upset of the Profs on Tuesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions improve to 4-1 on the season before they break into conference play this weekend. Alverthorpe Park has been an achilles heel for the Profs losing to the Nittany Lions 10-7 in 2018 while ranked No. 6 in the country, and losing in 2014, 4-3 when they were no. 10 in the country. On the mound Jaden Himmel Reich picked up the win, but it was a team effort with four pitchers taking the mound. At the plate Stevie Stevenson led the Nittany Lions going 4-of-5 with a run, RBI and picked up the game tying single to second base. In his two at bats, Justin Fogel came through in the clutch. The freshman knocked in a critical home run in the eighth inning.
In its return to action for the first time since March 11, 2020, Allegheny recorded an 8-5 win on the road over Penn State-Behrend. After more than a year between games due to COVID-19 cutting short the 2020 season and pushing back the start of the 2021 campaign, Brett Heckert put the Gators on the board first with a third inning sacrifice fly to center field which scored Luke Chutko that grew to 6-0 after six innings. After Penn State-Behrend put two runs on the board in the seventh inning, the Gators responded with his second two-RBI single of the game in the ninth that increased the lead to 8-2. The Lions fought their way back in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell short of the comeback as three runs were not enough to overcome the Gator lead.
Concordia Texas exploded for a four-run sixth inning to gain the lead in a back-and-forth affair, holding on to take a 6-5 victory over Texas Lutheran on Tuesday. Owen Hill's two-run blast and Casen Novak's two-RBI double highlighted the big sixth inning for the Tornados, lifting them to a 6-4 lead, and CTX ended the game on top 6-5. Nine different pitchers toed the rubber for the Tornados, and Hayden Schroeder was credited with the win for his 1.2 innings of work out of the bullpen in which he suffered one run on one hit.
Penn State Harrisburg split a pair of non-conference doubleheader contests with Mt. Aloysius on Tuesday afternoon, March 23. The Lions did enough to secure a 3-1 victory in the first outing before a wave of late-game scoring allowed the Mounties to spoil the potential sweep with a 15-4 win in the nightcap. Starting pitcher Austin Kunkel impressed in the opener, striking out six batters and allowing just one hit and a pair of walks in five innings of work en route to earning his first win of the season. Miscues and unearned runs turned a potential two-game sweep into Penn State Harrisburg's first loss of the young season, with a tie game in the seventh inning being blown open by the Mounties during their final two at-bats.
Southwestern continued its momentum from the weekend, defeating Hardin-Simmons University 6-5 to extend its winning streak to three games. Hardin-Simmons took advantage of starter Braden Simpson's early control issues in the bottom of the second inning to score one run. Ruben Garcia took over, walking in another run before being replaced by Cole Johnson, who induced a 6-4-3 double play. Southwestern responded in the top of the third as Jacob Tanner hit an RBI-double to left-center, and Preston Witt followed with an RBi-single through the right side to tie the game at 2-2. Hardin-Simmons reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning but the Pirates opened the top of the sixth with two consecutive outs but took advantage of an error, two walks, and a hit batter to score three runs. Hardin-Simmons tied the game in the bottom of the inning but Southwestern responded for the final run of the game. With the victory, Southwestern improves to 5-9 while Hardin-Simmons drops to 4-11.
Wells College wrapped up a nine-game home stand in impressive fashion with a 13-3 victory over visiting Clarks Summit University on Tuesday, March 23, as the team prepares for its first conference games this weekend. The Express scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. The win extended the Express' win streak to three games and set highs in runs and hits for the season. Wells improved its single game season runs and hits totals by one. Wells' previous best run total was a dozen – achieved twice this season against St. Lawrence University and Cazenovia College. The Express plated 17 hits on the day, again eclipsing its previous best of 16 on opening day against the Wildcats. Justin Colindres hit his first collegiate homerun with a 2-RBI blast in the fifth inning that made it a 10-1 game. For the day, the freshman finished with a pair of extra base hits, a pair of runs, a pair of RBIs and a stolen base. Derek Shea and Aaron Izquierdo had a team-best three hits each and the pair traded team leads in RBI and runs with Shea notching three RBIs and Izquierdo crossing the plate three times.
Centenary (La.) continued its amazing offensive output on Tuesday night as the streaking Gents won their 11th consecutive game, blasting the East Texas Baptist University Tigers, 13-5, at Woods Field. Centenary, off to its best start in the division III era (2012-present), moved up to No. 19 in the country in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Week 5 poll on Tuesday. Centenary collected 16 hits and belted a single-game season-high four home runs on Tuesday and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after its first at-bat. ETBU answered with a pair in the bottom half but then the Maroon and White scored the next four over the next three innings to lead 8-2 after four frames. The Tigers scored two in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4 but five runs in the eighth and ninth helped Centenary put the game away and cruise to another dominant win.
Kalamazoo College improved to 7-0 with a 16-9 win over Albion College in non-conference play at Woodworth Field on Tuesday. Kalamazoo scored twice in the bottom of the first only to see that lead erased by Albion with two runs in the top of the second. The Hornets followed up with 11 runs in the bottom of the second to take a 13-2 lead. Kalamazoo led 15-3 after four. Albion scored six unanswered runs in the next two innings to make it a 15-9 game after six innings. Kalamazoo added a run in the eighth leading to the 16-9 final. Kalamazoo had 15 hits in the game compared to 11 by Albion. Doug Propson was 4-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Amani Karim had three hits including a triple with three RBIs and three runs scored. Harrison Poeszat also had three hits including a double with an RBI. Noah Hecht had two hits including a double. Adam Dorstewitz earned the win as the starter in a game that featured seven Hornet pitchers. Dorstewitz allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings of work. Joe Wade, Parker Sisovsky, and Cade Thune pitched scoreless in relief.
Roanoke College hosted Averett in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon. It was announced earlier this month that the Cougars would be joining the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 2022. No. 16 Shenandoah University ran its winning streak to eight games with a 14-2 ODAC victory at Washington & Lee Tuesday afternoon. The 12-run victory gives Shenandoah (9-1, 6-0 ODAC) a sweep of the regular season series with W&L (1-7, 1-7). the Hornets banged out 20 hits versus five Washington & Lee pitchers and scored at least one run in every inning except the fourth, sixth, and seventh. Leading 4-2, SU began to pull away with a four-run fifth before breaking the game open with two runs in the eighth and another four-spot in the ninth. The support was more than enough for freshman Reilly Owen, who improved to 2-0 this spring by throwing 6.0 innings in his first collegiate start. Owen struck out four and allowed the two runs on five hits and one walk. Tristan Everett, Jacob Faivre and Colby Martin pitched the seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively, with Martin striking out the side in the ninth.
Emory University snapped its two-game losing skid Tuesday night, picking up an 8-4 victory on the road against in-state rival Piedmont College at Loudermilk Field in Demorest, GA. Joey Bock turned in one of his best career performances on the mound as he improved to 2-0 on the season while Caleb Shulman and Robby Wacker combined to drive in five runs for the Eagles as they moved to 3-3 overall. Bock pitched six innings, striking out a career-best eight batters to earn the win. He allowed just one run on three hits and two walks. He closed out his outing by escaping a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Despite trailing 4-0, Keystone College battled back and held on for an 8-6 non-conference win over visiting Montclair State on Tuesday at Christy Mathewson Field. With the win, the Giants (2-1) dealt the Red Hawks (4-1) their first loss and will host Susquehanna University on Thursday, March 25 at 3:30 pm. Pedro Abreu enjoyed a pinch-hit two-run homer to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth. After trailing 4-0 in the third, Keystone notched runs in the third and fifth to cut the deficit in half. Keystone enjoyed a four-run seventh, as Adam Kelly notched an RBI single, RJ Gouldsbury drew a bases-loaded walk and Devin Reed capped it off with a two-run double to give the Giants an 8-4 lead. Montclair threatened in the later innings but Logan Lixie was able to shut the door for the save. Carlos Benoit earned the start while Nick Gravel, Sean Perry, Decker Quintana and Austin Norton all appeared in relief. Quintana earned the win.
Texas Dallas first baseman Hunter Cheek was one of three Comets to hit home runs, and then made the defensive play of the game to end an 11th-inning threat as the UTD held on for an 11-10 extra-inning midweek victory over Texas Wesleyan University at Sycamore Park. Cheek, who was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, contributed a sacrifice fly to a 5-run 6th inning that got the Comets (8-5) gave the Comets their first lead. After UTD fell behind again in the bottom of the frame, Cheek blasted a solo home run that tied the score at 7-7 in the 7th. Teammates A.J. Liu and Peter Dyar also went deep for UTD in a contest that went back and forth the final innings. In their half of the 11th, the Comets re-took the lead with a 2-RBI single from Ramon Garza, but were faced with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the inning. A blazing line shot down the first-base line was speared by Cheek, who bobbled the ball up into the air, then finished the catch for the game's final out. The win broke a two-game skid for the Comets, who had just one victory in their last five games. Dyar was a perfect 3-for-3 for UTD with 4 RBI. Liu, Garza and Cheek all finished with multiple hits for the Comets. Brett Bihm was the winning pitcher, evening his record at 1-1 while Ben Soule picked up his second save of the season.
