With the wind blowing out, Kenyon College took full advantage in the batters' box, where it cranked out a combined 31 hits, including eight home runs, during Thursday's doubleheader sweep of the host Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University. Kenyon took game one 11-9 and then completed the sweep with a seven-inning, run-rule 21-6 victory in the second game of the twinbill. Those results improved the Lords' records to 15-6 overall and 4-0 within North Coast Athletic Conference play. The two losses dropped Ohio Wesleyan to 6-15 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC. Game one featured a trio of home runs off Kenyon bats. The first was struck in the top of the third inning with the Lords holding a 3-2 lead. With two outs, first-year Luke Meister ripped a home run to center, his fourth of the year and fourth in his last four games. Paced by Stephen Carr, the Kenyon bats didn't let up in game two. Carr belted a three-run home run in the second inning and then a two-run shot in the third. That gave him home runs in three consecutive at-bats, over the two games. Kenyon added three more home runs in the game two win.
Junior second baseman Mike Maher reached base five times and drove in three runs, while senior starting pitcher Stephen Quigley struck out nine in five and two-thirds innings to lead Wheaton College (Mass.) 10-2 over visiting Salve Regina University this afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons have won nine of their last 11 games and improve to 11-7 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 10-7-2. Wheaton has scored double-digits in eight of its 11 wins and scored multiple runs in four innings on the day. Maher was 3-3 with two walks and a run scored for the Lyons and Quigley gave up two unearned runs on seven hits and one walk to improve to 4-1 on the season. Wheaton starting pitchers have now allowed one or fewer earned runs on 10 occasions this season. Eight different batters collected at least one hit for the home team for the eighth time this season, including senior catcher Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.), who hit a three-run home run. Three Lyon relievers combined for three and a third innings of no-hit scoreless ball to close out the game. Graduate student catcher Dylan Ketch led the Salve Regina offense, going 3-4 with a double and a run scored.
Bluffton University scored in all eight innings as the Beavers hammered Ohio Northern 24-9 on a cold Thursday, April 7, at Memorial Field. Led by a rejuvenated offensive attack, Case Western Reserve University upset eighth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University 12-7 on Thursday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. With the win, the Spartans improve to 13-13 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 17-4. Four Spartans, junior catcher Jack Anderson, sophomore third baseman/pitcher Zack Carinci, graduate student designated hitter Tre Armstrong, and junior second baseman Trey Haley, each had multi-hit games for CWRU, which totaled 13 hits in the contest. Anderson, Carinci, Haley, and senior outfielder Cole Jarrett all drove in multiple runs as well. All 13 of the Spartan hits in the contest were singles, with six of those hits delivering runs. Case Western Reserve last scored 12 runs in a 12-3 win at Emory on March 27.
Allegheny swept a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader on the road against Oberlin Thursday. Allegheny won game one 14-8 and game two 13-3 in seven innings. The Blue & Gold finds itself 15-5 overall after having won 10 of its last 12, while also opening NCAC play 4-0. The Yeomen cut the game one deficit to 7-3 by getting a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Gators exploded for six in the sixth to take firm control. Brett Heckert hit an RBI single, Chase Chodkowski walked with the bases loaded, Brayden Cartwright drove in two with a single and Ryan Dougherty had an RBI single that also brought in Cartwright after a fielding error by the left fielder. Allegheny added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Heckert to post the 14-8 win. In game two, Allegheny had another five-run outburst in the sixth. A Brady Nolin triple drove in Chodkowski and Ryan Dougherty. Brady Nolin would come home on a wild pitch before a Schueltz double plated Stotsky and Heckert.
Fourth-ranked LaGrange came from six runs down to beat Berry 13-6 in a non-conference game Thursday night. The win gave the Panthers, now 21-3, a sweep of the two-game season series from the Vikings (21-9). Joe Ruth had four hits, including a two-run home run, to power LC's 16-hit attack. McKinley Erves had a double included in his three hits, scored two runs, and drove in another. Berry got a run in the first and another in the second. The Vikings, with the help of an LC error, jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a four-run third inning. The Panthers got outstanding relief pitching over the final six innings. Jacob Brown (3-0) got the final out of the third, then gave up just one hit and struck out four over the next three innings to get credited with the win. Tanner Chafin threw a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, allowing two hits. Cal Fuller pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth to close out the win.
Sophomore Jack Henderson's power surge continued with a go-ahead three-run home run, and The College of Wooster held off Otterbein University's ninth-inning rally for a 10-8 win on Thursday afternoon at Fishbaugh Field. Henderson, who just hit his first collegiate round-tripper during Wednesday's doubleheader against Hiram College, blasted a Travis Burson offering over the left field fence to make it an 8-5 game in the seventh inning. Prior to the long ball, Wooster (12-7) tied the game at five when junior first baseman Dane Camphausen's RBI groundout plated senior right fielder Ben Hines, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. Luke Barber, Otterbein's (14-7) top position player, clubbed a two-out, three-run homer of his own in the bottom of the ninth to pull the Cardinals within 10-8. Consecutive singles followed Barber's dinger, putting the tying run 270 feet from home. Senior Mitchell Reardon (save one) entered and slammed the door on the comeback bid by getting Noah Sprowls to fly out to senior center fielder Ben Gbur.
Curry College snapped a four-game skid Thursday afternoon, defeating Emerson College 6-2 in non-conference action at Jack Vallely Diamond. With the win, Curry moves back to .500 on the season at 8-8 overall. On the hill, freshman Tommy Marshall earned his first collegiate win by allowing two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts over six innings. Sophomore Ryan Kirkpatrick threw three shutout innings in relief to earn the save.
Wilmington College's bats stayed hot as the Fightin' Quakers plated double-digit runs for the third straight game in a 15-4 non-conference win in seven innings at Berea College on Thursday evening. Austin Christmas won his second game of the year for Wilmington, allowing four earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in five innings pitched. GlenAllen Anderson allowed just a single hit over the final two innings. For Berea, Christian Ortiz lost his second start of the season, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in four innings. Michael Vazquez and AJ Wylie both allowed runs out of the Mountaineers' bullpen. Nine of the Quakers' hits were of the extra-base variety while four Quakers stole a base. Dominic Depa finished 3-of-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored while Noah Martin also turned in a three-hit contest. Andrew Dailey and Zion Clay had two hits each for Berea in defeat.
Putting up some season-high offensive numbers, Albion College won their third straight with an 11-7 win over Olivet College. Mark Lauro finished the day 3 for 5 with four RBI with the exclamation point coming on a no doubt solo shot followed by a bat flip. A six run first lifted the Brits to a commanding lead after one. The Comets chipped away at the Albion lead, eventually trimming the score to 6-4 after four and a half. In the bottom of the fifth, the Brits responded with three runs to boost their advantage to 9-4. The 15 hits, 11 runs and 10 RBI are all season-highs for Albion. The Britons now improve to 8-11 overall, 3-1 in the MIAA.
Western New England was led by Joe Webber, who slashed for four RBIs on the afternoon, taking down the Keene State Owls pitching as WNE would walk away with a 10-1 victory over the Owls from a rainy Trelease Park on Thursday. Joe Webber finished the successful afternoon by going 2-5, connecting for four RBIs and two extra base hits. Webber is not hitting .351 on the season. Vincent Caccavale collected one base hit and had two RBIs on the afternoon, while also taking one base on balls. The WNE bullpen closed out fhe final four innings giving up just one base hit to Keene State while walking three and striking out four.
Capital University got back into the win column on Monday as they traveled to face the Trailblazers of Ohio Christian University. The Comets crossed the plate eleven times off of seven hits, 11 walks, and four OCU errors en route to an 11-2 victory. Cap moves to 6-15 on the season. OCU falls to 7-22 with the loss. Curtis Clark got the nod for the Purple and White and went for three innings. He struck out three batters of the 14 faced and gave up only three hits and one hit batsman on his way to his first win of the season. Brennon Newell and Kyle Bowles came in to relieve Clark. Newell pitched for three innings and struck out four. Bowles threw for two innings and faced eight batters. He gave up one hit. Slamming the door for Capital was Garrett Montgomery. He recorded one strikeout in the closing appearance.
