Eastern, Hamline get first wins on Thursday

Hamline picked up their first wins of the season via 11-0 and 10-6 scores over North Central (Minn.) at US Bank Stadium on Thursday morning. The Pipers improve to 2-5, while the Rams kickoff their season with an 0-2 record.

Behind a pitching gem from junior John Beck, together with remarkable offensive production, Eastern (1-7) earned their first win of the season on Thursday afternoon with a commanding 18-0 victory over the Newport News Apprentice School Builders (8-3). Beck put together a career-outing on the bump, while the Eastern offense racked up 20 hits, six extra base knocks, and 17 runs batted in. Beck (1-1) spun six brilliant shutout innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters. Additionally, the junior from Butler, N.J. allowed just one hit, a single, in six frames of work. Eastern dropped the second game to Apprentice School 10-1.

Westminster (Pa.) earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep Wednesday afternoon over Fredonia State. The Titans picked up a 14-8 win in game one before holding on for a 5-4 win in game two. In the opener, Westminster (2-1) took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a bases-clearing triple by junior left fielder Matthew Randza. The Titans broke an 8-8 tie with a six-run sixth inning after batting around in the frame. Five Westminster players had multi-hit games in the opener. Westminster jumped out to a 4-0 game two lead. After Fredonia State scratched out a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to cut Westminster's lead to 4-2, The Titans added one to their total and needed it as the Blue Devils would add two more runs to fall short of a win in the nightcap. Junior left-hander Logan Exler picked up the win after throwing 5.0 scoreless innings in his first start of the season. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four.

New England College opened their 2023 season with a 5-4 victor at Emerson College on Thursday evening at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts. Down 4-3 in the top of the ninth and down to their final two outs, the 'Grims would tie it up on an RBI single from junior pinch-hitter Johnny Cannavo to drive in Brady Philibotte. During the next at-bat, Cannavo was caught stealing, but the throw allowed junior pinch-runner Ryan Hughes to score from third, giving the lead back to NEC. NEC senior pitcher Alex Perez was outstanding in relief, allowing just one earned run in three innings while striking out seven Lions and picking up his first win of the season.

Down to their final strike multiple times in the final inning, UMass Boston came back from a 7-3 deficit with a five-run frame with two outs on Thursday afternoon to win 8-7 in their 2023 opener at Monan Park. Junior outfielder Teddy Schoenfeld seemingly put the Engineers up for good in the ninth inning when his two-run home run to deep right field against senior pitcher Ethan Errera helped cushion the MIT lead, 7-3, with the Beacons having just one round of at bats left. Sophomore pitcher Jimmy Moore looked to close the door on the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and put MIT on the doorstep of victory, recording two outs after a fielder's choice from freshman outfielder Justin Gouevia in which he reached first. From there, Moore would walk two batters, hit another, and allow an infield single which brought the Beacons with one run, 7-6. With the bases loaded trailing by one, senior infielder Gianni Zarilli Jr. took ball four from freshman pitcher Cole Foster which bounced into the turf for a wild pitch. Caught in a run down between third base and home, senior infielder Aidan Blake scrambled back towards the base before maneuvering around Foster on his way back towards home and past the tag from senior catcher Jake Sonandres for the game-winning run.

Gwynedd Mercy (1-0) traveled to Clarks Summit (0-1) and with an offensive outburst helped Head Coach Joe Brooks earn his first win career with the Griffins. Senior infielder Noah Andress had a career day at the plate. In the third inning, Andress hit his first grand slam and just two innings later would hit a two-run shot putting the Griffins up 14-1. Andress had a career-high 9 RBIs) and two home runs in a single game to give the Griffins a 19-5 victory

Playing in their home opener, Messiah earned a 9-6
victory over the visiting Franklin & Marshall Diplomats on
Thursday afternoon. The Falcons scored six runs in the first
two frames thanks to six walks and a trio of timely hits.
After taking the lead the Falcons never looked back. While
the Diplomats plated a handful of late runs it was not
enough to complete the comeback.

TCNJ opened their season on the road at Ursinus on Thursday, winning 3-1 behind some timely hitting and outstanding pitching. Jackson Malouf was dominant in his first outing of 2023, going seven innings while striking out 10, allowing five hits with two walks. Whenever the Lions appeared to have a chance, Malouf was there to quickly shut the door on the Bears. Malouf handed it over to classmate Ethan Earley for the last two innings. He struck out three in the eighth and battled out of a jam in the ninth to secure the save. The Bears had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the final frame, but Earley forced a grounder to the shortstop to close it out.

Mitchell opened up their 2023 campaign by routing Albertus Magnus 11-0 on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference showdown which was shortened to seven innings due to darkness. The Mariners pounded out 11 hits on the day, as senior catcher Matt Falk led the way, going 2-2 with a home run, five RBI, and a pair of walks. Falk's three run homer to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning extended the Mitchell lead to 9-0, yet the insurance wasn't necessary thanks to a pair of standout pitching performances. Senior righty Camren Varney got the start for the Mariners and picked up the win, tossing five innings of two hit ball, striking out eight, and walking only two. Fellow senior Ryan Solimine took over in the top of the sixth, working a pair of shutout innings, surrendering only a pair of hits, and retiring two by way of the strikeout.

Moravian swept a doubleheader versus Albion, 6-1 and 12-11, in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Stadium in Auburndale, Florida Thursday. Freshman Ross Huffman started on the mound in game one, and he had seven strikeouts in five innings of action for his first career win. Senior Ethan Weber tossed the final two innings with one strikeout. In game two, Albion scored once in each the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead by the Hounds answered with eight runs in the top of the fourth frame for an 8-2 advantage and cuised to the sweep. Moravian had 26 hits in the doubleheader led by Mason Fisher, who was 5-for-8 with two RBIs, two runs and a double.

New Jersey City exploded for 17 runs for the second straight game as the Gothic Knights dominated Centenary on the road. NJCU, led by another outstanding offensive effort from senior outfielder Josh Hernandez — he went 4-for-5 with seven RBI and launched two dingers, including a grand slam — coupled with a strong outing on the bump by junior righty Ali Pompey, topped the Cyclones, 17-4. Pompey got the win after tossing 6.0 innings. He struck out seven and allowed two earned on four hits. Seniors Justin Wiltsey and Frank Shipman each tossed scoreless innings of relief, as well.

Maritime began its annual Florida trip on Thursday with a doubleheader against Houghton. The Privateers (3-1) scored four runs in the top of the first inning in game one en route to an 11-1 victory, then completed the sweep of the Highlanders (3-5) with a 9-2 win in the second contest at the Lanwood Sports Complex. Each of the first four hitters in the Maritime lineup drove in at least two runs in the game one victory. As a team, Maritime belted out 13 hits in game two (and 27 total in the doubleheader).

Dubuque picked up their seventh straight victory Thursday morning at the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational as they took down the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders by a final score of 11-4. Cekander was the starting pitcher on the mound earning his first win of the season in five innings giving up six hits, two runs while striking out five. Noah Zoglman grabbed the save finishing the final four innings allowing four hits and two runs. Zoglman struke out the opposition six times. The Spartans totaled 11 hits in the victory with four Spartans including the top three in the batting order had two hits. Hicks led the Spartans with three RBI's off his triple. The Spartans continue their winning streak to seven to be 7-0 overall.

In their home opener on a chilly March afternoon, Widener defeated the Washington College Shoremen 11-0. The Pride have a 2-4 record in the regular season. They see their first conference opponent, Stevenson, next Friday. Six of the Pride's 11 runs came from three individuals scoring twice each: Kyle Brex, Nick Barenz, and Aaron Nuble. Widener had six walks. On the mound, Sean Curran threw 91 pitches in six innings. He allowed seven hits and two walks, and he recorded two strikeouts.

Jace Fetterman crushed his first home run of the year in the sixth inning to cap the scoring as Lebanon Valley rallied from a five-run deficit to earn a 7-7 tie with Muhlenberg in the home opener on Thursday afternoon at McGill Field. The game was called after the eighth inning due to darkness. The Mules took the lead in the fourth and increased their lead to 6-1 in the fifth on a two-run home run. LVC responded with a big five-run inning in the bottom half of the inning to tie things back up at six. After Muhlenburg took another lead, Fetterman made the lead short-lived as he blasted a shot over the 365 sign in right center for a home run in the bottom of the inning. LVC had a chance to win in the eighth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Muhlenberg forced two short fly balls to right and a strikeout to get out of the inning unscathed. 

Ohio Northern scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and post a 4-1 victory over Oberlin on a chilly but nice Thursday afternoon at Wander Field. The contest was the earliest recorded home opener since ONU began playing baseball in 1891. In 2016, Northern swept a double header from Oberlin 7-2 and 1-0 on March 12 at Wander Field in the previous earliest home opener. Pitching dominated the early stages of the game as the two teams combined for just three hits and no runs in the first five innings. Tied 1-1, sophomore Hunter Kauser led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give ONU a 2-1 lead. They would score twice more in the ining to end the scoring. Sophomore Vaughn Duncan shut the Yeomen down in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his first career save. Senior Jack Hutchins allowed just one earned run in 3.0 innings of relief to earn the win on the hill and improve to 2-0 on the year.

Well-rested after an off day, the Saint Mary's Cardinals — who opened their spring trip with just one win in their first four spring trip games — were clicking on all cylinders against Calvin, putting together a pair of three-run innings and rolling to an 8-3 victory over the Knights Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals gave their pitching staff a little breathing room, scoring three unearned runs in the sixth and putting together a second three-run inning in the eighth to grab an insurmountable 8-2 advantage. Tanner Bauman, Riley Bauman, and Cameron Weber all collected two hits to account for six of SMU's eight hits against the Knights. Charest picked up his first collegiate pitching win, allowing two runs on six hits over the first five innings. Eric Stromberg blanked Calvin on two hits in two innings of relief, and Dylan Westcott.

St. Joseph's University (L.I.) picked up a pair of wins, 8-2 against Mary Washington and 10-6 against Cabrini, on day one of their trip to The Ripkin Experience on Thursday afternoon. In game one. graduate student Hermes Abreu was 4-for-5 at the plate with and RBI and two runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles, who combined for 17 hits, to an 8-2 win over the University of Mary Washington in game one. Senior starter Anthony Cinquemani tossed six shutout innings allowing just five hits with three strikeouts to claim his second win of the season. After trailing 6-3 in the nightcap, a five-run bottom of the seventh highlighted by a two out, two RBI base hit off the bat of sophomore James Maggio put Golden Eagles ahead 8-6 before adding two runs in the eighth to secure the 10-6 win. Sophomore Josh Dannenberg picked up his first win of the year striking out six without surrendering a hit 2.1 innings out of the pen.

Jon Rosado hit a walk off single to lift the Scarlet Raiders over St. Elizabeth in a thrilling 15-14, 11-inning win. The Scarlet Raiders opened the game with a bang, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first which would set the tone for the game. After a pair of scoreless innings, the Eagles found their first runs of the game, plating four to cut the lead down to 6-4. Rutgers-Newark then scattered seven runs over the course of the 6th and 7th innings before the Eagles scored 10 between the 7th, 8th and 9th. Trailing by one in the bottom of the 9th, Furcal was patient at the plate and was rewarded after being hit by a pitch to plate the tying run of the game. After getting out of the top of the 11th, Recchia gave the Scarlet Raiders the perfect start with a lead-off triple. The Eagles followed that with a pair of intentional walks to load the bases to make the easy play at home which worked for two outs. Down 1-2 in the count, Rosado waited for his pitch and hit the ball into shallow center for the walk off win. Eric Recchia had another quality performance, going 4-for-6 from the dish with five RBIs.
