Three games were completed in the first day of the 2024 American Southwest Conference Championship at Woods Field on the campus of East Texas Baptist. Despite the times being moved back two hours, all three contests were completed with no weather delays. McMurry eliminated Mary Hardin Baylor 7-4 in the final game of the opening day in the ASC tournament. Earlier Hardin-Simmons advanced with a 6-5 win over UMHB and Concordia-Texas defeated McMurry 6-2. The opener featured both teams trading leads and forcing ties at dramatic junctures of the contest, but a 10th inning home run by Kyler Reed was enough to push the Cowboys to a 6-5 lead that held up in the first game of the day. The War Hawks jumped out to an early lead in game two as Nolan Scherencel homered over the left field wall. CTX countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of that inning to go up and started a stretch of six unanswered runs en route to a victory. In the first elimination game, McMurry and UMHB swapped leads until the War Hawks reclaimed the lead the rest of the way with a three-run fourth inning. A bunt single by D. Abbott evened the score, as an error on the throw to first allowed Scherence to come around and score. A couple of RBI groundouts by Mueller and Xavier Escobar put the War Hawks up 4-2.
USA South Conference Tournament got underway with a pair of three-team double elimination tournaments, with the second of which being held in Brevard, North Carolina at Gil Coan Field, marking BC's first NCAA-era postseason home contest. The first game of the day was a marathon between six-seed Pfeiffer University (20-19) and three-seed Methodist University (21-21), with the Falcons coming from behind to earn a 14-13 victory. With the loss, the Methodist Monarchs were a loss away from elimination. However, with their backs against the wall, the Monarchs delivered, using eight-consecutive runs to earn the 9-3 victory over the two-seed Brevard College baseball team (20-17). As a result of the tournament-opening defeat, the Tornados will attempt to hold off elimination tomorrow, as Brevard will take on Pfeiffer at Gil Coan Field at 11 a.m. If the Tornados are able to win, it would set up a rematch between Pfeiffer and Methodist, with the winner of that contest facing BC on Saturday. In the first double elimination pod, Greensboro defeated Southern Virginia 14-2 and was later eliminated by NC Wesleyan 14-2 to set up a best 2-of-3 for the Pride and Bishops.
