SPRINGFIELD, OH - After eight seasons as the head coach of the Wittenberg University baseball program, Brian McGee has announced his resignation to pursue other opportunities.
Mitchell Griffiths has accepted the position of interim head coach after two seasons as the program's assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator, and pitching coach. A 2018 graduate of Alderson Broaddus University, Griffiths coached the Tiger pitching staff to numerous records in his first two seasons after previous coaching stops at Adrian College and Coker College.
Introduced as the Tigers' 10th head coach in program history prior to the 2017 season, McGee led the Tigers to an overall record of 159-116 during his tenure. Against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition, Wittenberg's record over those eight seasons was 72-45.
McGee's teams showed steady improvement during his tenure, including six straight winning seasons from 2019 through 2024 after taking over a program in the midst of five straight losing campaigns. The Tigers posted second-place finishes in the NCAC regular season standings three straight years (2021-23) and then broke through for a share of their first-ever NCAC championship in 2024. Wittenberg has been the NCAC Tournament runner-up each of the last two years while coming up just short of an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Along the way, McGee and his coaches were named NCAC Coaching Staff of the Year in 2023, and the Tigers practically re-wrote the program's record books across many offensive and pitching categories over the last three years.
McGee came to Wittenberg from Lake Erie College, where he served as head coach from 2008-16 and compiled a record of 187-244. He is a 2000 graduate of Tiffin University.
