DECATUR, Ill. – The Coe College baseball team split a pair of non-conference games Sunday, defeating Hamline 10-0 in eight innings before falling 6-5 to host Millikin in the nightcap. A trio of Kohawk pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter in the opening game against the Pipers, complimenting the offensive attack that bashed out 15 hits and 10 runs. Starter Caden Richards was excellent from the off, going five innings while surrendering only two walks. Evan Bender and CJ Johnson helped seal the deal in relief as Bender worked a pair of innings before Johnson pitched the eighth. The Kohawk offense was spurred on by three-hit games from Ryan Thoreson, Jack Allison and Austin Gomez, combining to drive in five of Coe's 10 runs. Jake Brosius, Mitchell Eckardt and Jon Wille accounted for the remaining RBI with Brosius driving home three. Coe's first loss of the year came in tough fashion, blowing a four-run lead in the seventh inning as Millikin scored four in the seventh and one in the eighth to take the lead for good. Ethan O'Donnell turned in a quality start despite the loss, pitching five innings while allowing one run on six hits. Gomez had a team-high two RBI in the game while Wille, Brosius and Evan deVally added one each.

Coe's offensive onslaught started with a five-run second inning, taking the early lead thanks to six hits in the frame. Eli Elsbecker, Thoreson, Allison, Gomez and Ryan Brosius strung together five straight hits to begin the frame as Thoreson and Gomez picked up RBI hits to make it 3-0. Jake Brosius capped off the inning with two outs in a clutch situation, delivering a two-run single to score Gomez and his brother. Richards continued to deal after working around a one-out walk in the first, recording a perfect second inning before stranding a runner in the third. A double play erased another walk in the fourth, setting the table for the offense to add more in the bottom of the inning. Wille and Brosius recorded back-to-back RBI hits to make it 7-0, posting a triple and single to extend the lead. Richards worked another perfect inning in the top of the fifth, completing his day with a trio of groundouts. Eckardt added an insurance run in the home half of the inning, driving Allison home with a sacrifice fly. Allison was involved again in the final two runs for the Kohawks, picking up an RBI single in the seventh before scoring the game-ending run in the eighth on an RBI double from Gomez.

Coe was on top from the opening inning, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI double from Brosius and a sacrifice bunt from deVally. The Kohawks gave one back in the bottom of the third as the Big Blue halved the deficit with a two-out infield single. An insurance run was added for Coe in the top of the fifth, using a leadoff single from Johnson to start the rally. Wille drove home the run, reaching on a fielder's choice for a 3-1 lead. Gomez made it 5-1 an inning later, extending the lead with a clutch two-out single to score Allison and Thoreson. Millkin exploded for four runs in the seventh after threatening for much of the game. The hosts had five straight hitters reach, getting the first run of the inning on a single before a bases-loaded walk. Millikin tied the game two batters later with a two-out single to reset the game. The Big Blue rode the momentum into the eighth inning, taking advantage of two Kohawk errors en route to a 6-5 lead. Coe put the tying run on second with one out in the ninth but a strikeout and groundout ended any final chances.
