A sixth-inning grand slam from Will Fremion highlighted a seven-run inning for Wabash in the Little Giants' 14-0 victory over Northwestern (Minn.) on Monday. Fremion launched his first collegiate home run with the bases loaded in the sixth after Wabash (4-3) had already scored six runs in the fifth inning. Backed by big offensive efforts throughout the game, including a seven-run first inning, UMass Dartmouth defeated Russell Sage College, 14-10 in non-conference action on Monday at Chain O'Lakes Park. The Corsairs move to 2-4 on the season, while the Gators are now 3-3 overall. The visiting Gators opened the scoring in the top of the first as with two outs on the board and UMass Dartmouth answered in the bottom of the frame. The Corsairs pushed it to a 7-1 lead when the opening inning was in the books. Crooked numbers but UMD in the third and seventh bested Sage's fourth. Sage added three more runs in the final two innings, falling 4 runs from sending the game past the ninth.
Nebraska Wesleyan continued its hot start to the season, defeating SUNY Poly 17-7 in seven innings on Monday at the RussMatt Invitational. The win moves the Prairie Wolves to 6-0, marking their best start to a season since 1991. SUNY Poly struck first, building a 7-1 lead in the third. Nebraska Wesleyan flipped the script in the bottom of the fourth, erupting for seven runs on five hits. NWU broke the game open in the seventh, scoring seven runs on four hits to trigger the run rule. Max Brammier earned the win in relief, allowing two runs over two innings while striking out two. Trevor Storer started the game, giving up five runs (one earned) over two innings. Bryson Knapp and Cohle Sherman combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out two and allowing zero hits between the two of them. The Prairie Wolves racked up 17 hits, with Duncan Ortega and Carter Betts leading the way with three hits apiece. Tyler Merkel, Easton Johnson, and Brady Bell each drove in three runs, while Jake Gerardis reached base four times, including three walks and his second-inning homer.
Brandeis University tied the school record for runs scored in a doubleheader today, as the Judges went on the road and swept Mass. Maritime, 24-7 and 18-3, in Buzzards Bay. The only other time that the Judges scored as many runs in a twin-bill came on April 14, 1979, when they swept Bowdoin College, 19-1 and 23-5. The 24 runs scored by Brandeis in the opener was their highest total scored under head coach Derek Carlson '91. It was the most by a Brandeis team since a 27-0 win over Norwich on March 11, 2007. It's only the 10th time in program history the Judges scored 24 or more runs in a contest. The top run producer on the day was sophomore CF Connor Crowley, who went 4-8 with six RBI and seven runs scored out of the leadoff spot. He had a double, a home run and three stolen bases.
Saint Joseph (Conn.) battled from behind to defeat the Vassar College Brewers, 9-5, in non-conference action during its second day of action at the RussMatt Invitational in Davenport, Fla. The Blue Jays scored six runs over the final four innings to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 9-5 victory. The Brewers raced out to an early lead, pushing across two runs in both the first and second innings to build a 4-0 advantage. The Blue Jays responded with two runs in the top of the third inning to cut their deficit in half and inched closer with another run in the top of the fourth inning. The Brewers got that run back in the bottom half of the inning and from there, it was all Blue Jays, as USJ erupted for three runs in the sixth and three in the eighth to secure the 9-5 victory.
The Crown Polars faced off with the Wesleyan University Cardinals on Monday and came out on top 13-11. Both teams knocked in one run in the first inning and the Cardinals tacked on three more in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. A Drew Girtz single in the second drove in Ethan Habetler to cut the lead to 4-2. After a one run 3rd from Wesleyan the Polars scored 7 unanswered runs as Ashton Long hit a solo home run in the 3rd to get the scoring started. Bryan Gerbers capped it off with a two run blast to take the 9-5 lead. Wesleyan once again battled back tying the score up and forcing the Polars to go to the bullpen. Jacob Van Dam started the game and pitched 6.2 innings allowing 11 hits and striking out 5 batters. Danny Gallardo finished out the top of the 7th and the score was set at 9-9. Girtz, Gerbers, and Tyler Bloom rallied to drive in 4 runs and out Crown ahead 13-9. The Cardinals threatened in the 9th scoring two runs, but the Polars closed it out with the likes of Girtz on the mound.
Saint Joseph's (Maine) (4-0) swept Wisconsin-Superior (4-6 ) Monday afternoon on day two of their spring trip to Florida. The Saint Joseph's Monks opened Monday's doubleheader at Chain Lakes with a 10-6 victory over Wisconsin-Superior, fueled by an explosive offensive performance. Saint Joseph's set the tone early, with Jared Wilhelm launching a leadoff home run in the first inning. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Monks saw Wisconsin-Superior respond with two runs in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on an error by Jake Carlisle. However, Saint Joseph's steadily pulled away, scoring in each of the first six innings to build a comfortable lead. The Monks (3-0) completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory in the nightcap, powered by a six-run third inning that proved to be the difference.
Benedictine University finished their trip to Florida by downing Western New England 15-8 to cap the trip with a 5-3 record. George Betevis had a huge day. Benedictine opened the scoring with five runs in the second inning. Betevis homered twice, finished with four hits and drove home five. JT Adams struck out seven in six innings to earn the win. Steven Byrne logged the final 2.2 to notch his second save.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy trailed by five after five innings, but rallied for seven runs in the sixth and defeated Earlham, 9-7, in a game that was shortened to eight innings due to lightning. USMMA improved to 3-4, while Earlham dropped to 4-7. Sophomore Tommy Chiappetti finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while freshman Braden Vazquez went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Senior Garrett Clapsaddle was 1-for-4 with an RBI double and classmate Jack Millen went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Senior Michael Monkevich allowed two runs in 1.2 innings of work to earn the win in relief.
Penn State Abington had to wait nearly six hours from the regularly scheduled game time against Bethany College, but the wait was well worth it as the Nittany Lions defeated the Bison, 10-1, on Monday night at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park. Bethany took the game's first lead in the top half of the third as the Bison took advantage of a two-out throwing error by the Nittany Lions to lead 1-0. The Nittany Lions tied the game in the bottom of the sixth in similar fashion as the Bison did in the first. In the seventh, Abington scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the inning and the bases loaded. Abington blew the game wide open in the bottom of the eighth as the Nittany Lions sent 12 batters to the plate that produced seven runs in the innings. Abington took advantage of two defensive errors in the inning, while connecting on three hits and three free bases via walks and hit by pitches. Four batters drove in runs, including a two-run single by Garofalo.
The Centenary Cyclones delivered a commanding performance against Franciscan University, securing a 10-0 victory on the second day of their Spring Break Trip in Fort Pierce, Florida. The Cyclones wasted no time setting the tone, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second. Their offensive consistency throughout the game led to a dominant win, which was ultimately called early due to the mercy rule. Leading the offensive charge was Joseph Frei, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Nick Payne contributed with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Dominick Chiego showcased patience at the plate, reaching base twice via hit-by-pitch and scoring two runs. The Cyclones demonstrated excellent baserunning, stealing five bases in total and capitalizing on key opportunities to extend their lead. On the mound for his first career start was Freshman Colin Ferschman, who was outstanding, tossing six shutout innings while allowing only seven hits and striking out seven batters. His command and efficiency kept Franciscan's offense off balance throughout the game. The defense behind him was solid, committing just four errors while making key plays to maintain the shutout. Carter Sari would come in and close the game allowing only one hit in two innings of work. With this dominant victory, Centenary improves to 6-5-1 on the season.
