| Oswego faced off against Oneonta in a conference clash that would help determine the SUNYAC playoff seedings. Geneva stayed hot on Monday afternoon, winning their third straight game as they defeated Penn State New Kensington 13-6 on a beautiful spring afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes stayed hot at the plate, scoring at least seven runs for the sixth time in their past eight games, and they move to 17-15 overall on the season with the victory. Zach Lemansky got the win for the Golden Tornadoes, his first of the season, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs. He also struck out three batters. Zack Sackett led the way at the plate, putting together an impressive 4-for-5 performance with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Eric Gonzalez went 3-for-4 offensively with two doubles and two RBIs. Simon Wehr stole a game-high three bases while also scoring three runs.
After another rainy weekend forced a shift in the schedule, the Worcester State Lancers (18-11, 9-7) returned to finish out the series with the Salem State Vikings in the second to last conference series of the season. Worcester State won twice, 2-1 and 13-4. Lancers pitcher graduate student Ben Smith had a great start to the opener game with three strikeouts in a row. With Smith dominating from the mound, his offense built a 2-0 lead. With 15ks already recorded in the game Smith looked to close out the game and set a new school record for strikeouts in a single game to wrap up the action. Salem would manage to find one run on Smith but in the end his momentum was too strong as Smith grabbed the game one win on a looking strike for 2-1 victory. The Vikings would be shut out of the second game with the Lancers tapping in runs for a 7-0 lead into the third. Salem would close to 7-4 lead but that was as close as they got with the Lancers scoring the game's six final runs.
Behind four hits, including a grand slam, senior Karl Miller paced Nichols to a 12-0 win over non-conference opponent Anna Maria on Monday afternoon from the Nichols Baseball Field. Miller finished the day going 4-4 with three singles and a grand slam. He added five RBI and two runs scored to lead all players. Teammate Andrew Croteau chipped in with a pair of RBIs on a 2-4 day. Nichols invoked the 10-run rule in the top of the seventh, after turning a game ending double play in the inning. The Bison defense held, the AMCATs to just four hits. Senior Sean Ryan (1-1) earned his first win of the year for Nichols on the mound, while freshman Tim Hudson and Josh Warming saw valuable time out of the pen in relief. Ryan threw 5.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Hudson went one inning, allowing one hit and fanning one. Warming saw the final inning for Nichols.
Sophomore Sebastien Reis walked it off for Rivier in the 13th inning of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference clash against Colby-Sawyer at Harvey Woods Field on Monday afternoon to earn a 6-5 victory and a place in the GNAC Tournament for the first time since 2023. The Raiders took the lead three times only to see Colby-Sawyer. In the ninth, Rivier would score a run that the Chargers had no time to match as a ball launched towards the fence in right scored senior Luis Tejada to secure the victory, 6-5. Ty Baker threw a career-high 6.2 innings to earn his first win of the season, striking out three batters faced. Senior lefty Nate Bonacorsi got the no decision despite a solid 6.1 innings of work in which he struck out three Charger batters.
VT-Lyndon erupted for 11 runs and 13 hits and went on to defeat Plymouth State University, 11-5, in a non-conference game this afternoon. Lyndon improved to 12-21 on the season, while Plymouth fell to 6-19. Lyndon opened a lead to 7-3 after five innings. Plymouth chipped away with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Jack Holley came on to relieve Bustamante in the eighth inning and promptly set the Panthers down in order. Lyndon then broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Holley closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, earning the save and preserving the win for Holley, who allowed one earned run run and six hits with five strikeouts over five innings.
Benedictine scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to take a wild 21-16 decision over Carthage, the leaders of the CCIW, on the road Monday afternoon. Betevis matched a conference record with the three homers, becoming the first player since 2022 to accomplish the feat. The senior finished with four hits, four runs and four RBIs. Nonnenmann also drove home four. Benedictine tallied 17 hits. Brennan Fisher and Castrovillari both notched three hits. Kevin Butler knocked home three. Five pitchers appeared in the game. Antonino Ferrara worked three innings to earn the victory.
The Utica Pioneers started their week off in style with a huge Monday matchup against SUNY Poly, one that featured some big playoff implications related to the impending Empire 8 Tournament. In one of the biggest games of the year so far, Kooper Knabe proved to be a big game player as the Pioneer pitcher threw six spectacular innings to lead his team to an 11-5 victory. Knabe rolled for the majority of the matchup, shutting out the Wildcats over the first five frames of the outing. He added three strikeouts in another winning effort, his sixth of the season to run his record to an amazing 6-0. The Wildcats managed to strike a few times in the sixth inning, breaking up the shutout effort. However, Knabe gave way for the powerful pitching duo of Connor Ford and Peyton Newton who finished the job in emphatic fashion. Ford came in to achieve two important outs, allowing just a single hit in his frame of work. He set up the closer Newton well while also throwing efficiently, guaranteeing that the Pioneers will have his services for a plethora of important contests that they'll play this week. Then came Newton to close out the crucial clash. The Weedsport native went the final 2.1 innings, striking out two and allowing just a single hit to snuff out the Wildcats final few chances. Newton fell a few outs short of the save but had yet another superb outing to start the week off with a big win.
No. 23 Mount Union (26-8) won a non-conference game, 12-6, against Westminster (Pa.) (16-19) on the road on Monday. The Purple Raiders have won 22 out of their last 24 games. On the mound, junior right-handed pitcher Anthony Warner made the start, pitching a strong 5.1 innings of work with three strikeouts, allowing three runs, with only two being earned. Westminster temporarily tied the game at the bottom of the sixth inning, but Mount Union quickly responded to the challenge at the top of the seventh inning giving the Purple Raiders a 10-6 lead. Mount Union scored two additional runs in the top of the ninth inning, as Chris Tsouras and Jaired Lehman both recorded RBI groundouts, raising Tsouras's RBI total to 47 and Lehman's to 36. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Christopher Maurer earned his third win of the season, pitching 3.2 innings of work, recording four strikeouts while allowing three runs, securing the 12-6 win.
Christopher Newport juniors Jake Benedict and Sam Benedict paired up for a couple of terrific outings on Monday afternoon as the twin brothers combined for 5 doubles, 7 RBI, and 5 runs scored in a 21-11 run-rule victory at Hampden-Sydney. Sam notched his second 6-RBI performance of the season while Jake scored three or more runs in a game for the sixth time this season out of the leadoff spot. Closing out the regular season in highlight-reel fashion, the Captains scored a season-high 21 runs on 19 hits featuring six multi-hit performances in the game. CNU slugged eight total doubles in the game with the twins accounting for five of the two-base hits. Josh Reinhold, Aaron Maxie, and Creston Saunders each added one doubles apiece while Jake added two and Sam pelted a career-high three in the game. The Captains actually trailed the game, 10-5, after five innings of play before flipping the scoreboard with a 10-run sixth inning to take the lead for good. CNU then added four in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a ten-run lead and held on in the bottom of the eighth for the mercy rule victory. Earlier in the game, CNU led, 1-0, and 5-4, before the Tigers responded with a six-run fifth to lead by five before the offensive explosion by the Captains.
Hobart outlasted Clarkson 9-8 in a crucial Liberty League West showdown played at Jefferson Community College. The victory gave the Statesmen a 2-1 series win over the Knights and kept Hobart in the running for a spot the Liberty League Crossover Series. Senior Owen Sanders and sophomore Sean Garvin and Cole Conte all went 2-for-4. Sanders had two RBIs and a run scored. Conte and Garvin both finished with an RBI and a run. The Statesmen jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, but saw Clarkson rally to tie the game at 7 in the fifth inning. In the seventh, sophomore Jack Byrnes' sacrifice fly scored Conte and restored Hobart's lead. The Statesmen added a need insurance run in the eight when Garvin's double to the gap in right center scored senior Nate Johnson. In the top of the ninth, CU got a double, a ground out and a single to cut Hobart's lead to one. A wild pitch and a flyout to center put the potential tying run on third, but sophomore pitcher Jake Schulte got a flyball in foul territory down the right field line that first-year Jack Farnen ran down for the final out. Sophomore Chris Lockwood got the win after throwing two scoreless innings and Schulte got a two-inning save. "It was great to get out to a lead in a must win game," Hobart Head Coach Brad Cook said. "Clarkson came back with their own punches and it was a fight the rest of the way. I'm proud of our guys for finding a way to win a game we had to have. We controlled what we could and now we wait." Hobart improved to 18-15 overall, 8-11 in the Liberty League. More importantly, the Statesmen improved to 7-8 in the Liberty League West taking over fourth place.
Bridgewater State has clinched at least a share of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship. The Bears defeated Fitchburg State, 6-3, in a makeup game on Monday afternoon, giving them a 15-3 conference record. BSU (24-11 overall) is three games ahead of second-place Westfield State University (12-6) with the Bears and Owls meeting in a three-game series to finish the regular season later this week. One victory will give BSU the title outright and the No. 1 seed in next week's MACAC tournament. During the Bears' win over Fitchburg State, junior Ryan Flaherty tied the program record with his 15th homer of the season. Flaherty now shares the mark with John Kiely, who hit 15 home runs in 1986. Kiely pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 1991-93. Senior Scott Emerson notched his 100th career stolen bases (most in program history) and rapped a single for his 300th career total base. Only BSU Hall of Famer Steve Smith (2005-08) has more total bases with 347. Senior Kevin Lindsay recorded his 100th career RBI.
No. 3 nationally ranked Endicott erased an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Eastern Connecticut State, 11-2, on Monday evening at North Field. After allowing two runs in the first, the Gulls scored 11 unanswered to down the Warriors. Kyle Grabowski came around to score on AJ Hamm's gap-shot double to plate the Blue and Green's first run of the game in the second. Then, an inning later, the Gulls snatched the lead with a three-run frame. Grabowski doubled home a pair before John Mulready tripled for the second consecutive day to score another. The Gulls continued to pile on with another two runs in the fourth, two in the seventh, and three in the eighth to reach double-digits once again. TJ Liponis capped off the scoring with his third home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth. The duo of John Connolly and Chris Jenkins combined to shut down the Warriors' bats after their two-run first inning. Although Connolly did not earn the win, he went a respectable 4.1 IP with 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, and 2 K's, before turning it over to Jenkins in the fifth inning. From there, Jenkins continued his stretch of dominance and delivered 4.2 IP of scoreless relief to seal the win.
Immaculata defeated Gwynedd Mercy 12-0 in seven innings to take the third game of the Atlantic East Conference series with the Griffins. Immaculata scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, scoring all 12 runs in the first four innings. Stephen Devanney was outstanding on the mound pitching 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only two hits, and had seven strikeouts to earn the win. Will Kelley was 3-4 with three RBIs, and Matt Passerini was 2-3 with two RBIs for the Mighty Macs. With the win Immaculata improves to 10-24 overall, and they are 5-7 in Atlantic East Conference play. Gwynedd Mercy falls to 13-22 overall, and they are 3-9 in Atlantic East Conference play.
