LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year David Swift hit for the cycle and senior Ben Gesmondi hit a grand slam as the Bates baseball team rolled to a 25-4 win over Thomas College Tuesday afternoon at Leahey Field.
It's the largest margin of victory in a game for the Bobcats (11-14) since 2010. The Terriers (10-17) used nine pitchers who combined to issue 12 walks and six hit-by-pitches. The Bobcats tallied 14 hits as a team and took advantage of four Thomas errors.
Swift (Yarmouth, Maine) went 4-6 with two runs scored and seven RBIs, tallying a double, a triple, a home run, and a single in that order. It is believed to be the first time a Bates baseball player has hit for the cycle since 1984.
Bates jumped out to an 8-0 lead, only to see the Terriers score four times in the top of the sixth to cut the lead in half.
But the Bobcats answered with vigor, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Senior Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) led off the inning with an infield single. Swift tripled Genser home and junior Gibby Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) reached on an error. Swift scored on the play to make it 10-4 in favor of Bates. Sophomore Luke Yoon (Honolulu, Hawaii) got hit by a pitch and first-year Max Dushney (Ashland, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice when the Terriers tried and failed to get Sullivan at third, loading the bases. First-year Nolan Bibbo (Wellesley, Mass.) singled home Sullivan and Yoon for a 12-4 lead. One out later, sophomore Keagan Ryan (Salem, N.H.) got hit by a pitch and a wild pitch plated Dushney. Gesmondi (Narragansett, R.I.) singled in two runs and Swift launched a three-run home run to make it 18-4.
At this point, the only drama left in the game revolved around whether Swift would hit for the cycle. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, he worked the count full and smacked a hot shot to second. Jason Bartlett made a fine diving stop for the Terriers, but he couldn't get enough mustard on his throw to first as he was forced to throw from his knees. Swift was safe with an infield single, completing the cycle.
Swift's single was only the start of another big inning for Bates. First-year John Federico (Durham, N.H.) drew a walk and sophomore Tyler Canna (Rye, N.Y.) reached on an infield single for his first collegiate hit. A few batters later, Gesmondi unloaded on a pitch to left field for his second collegiate home run -- and first grand slam -- capping off the scoring for Bates.
Swift and Gesmondi combined to drive in 13 of the Bobcats' 25 runs. Ryan made five plate appearances but went 0-0 with three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice fly.
First-year Charlie Bushley (Cohasset, Mass.) worked an inning and a third of shutout ball out of the bullpen to pick up his first collegiate win. Sophomore Kenny Carlisle (South Portland, Maine) got the start for Bates and tossed three and a third innings of one-hit ball, striking out five. Sophomore Henry Kolani (Tarrytown, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut and threw a scoreless eighth inning. Senior David Miller (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) blanked the Terriers in the ninth to finish off the victory.
The Bobcats have won four in a row and seven of their last eight. They host Husson Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
