Teams sweep southern competition on Opening Weekend

Blake Goodridge tossed six shutout innings in the opener and the LeTourneau baseball bats came alive in the final innings of game one and carried that into game two as the YellowJackets swept a doubleheader from Millsaps on Saturday at Conrad-Vernon Field. LeTourneau took game one, 7-0, and then claimed game two -- and the series -- with a 10-5 victory in the finale. In the opening game, Goodridge went six shutout innings and collected nine strikeouts and LeTourneau used a six-run sixth inning to pull away in the first game, 7-0. It was the offense that carried the Yellowjackets to the sweep. Jonah McDaniel and Blake Vice both homered in the sixth inning and the YellowJackets completed the twin-bill sweep with a 10-5 victory in game two.

Occidental secured a decisive victory in game 1 of a doubleheader, defeating Centenary (La.) with a final score of 28-4 on Saturday at Anderson Field. It's the most runs the Tigers have scored in a game since 2009, when Oxy defeated Whitman 28-3 — nearly 17 years ago to the day — Feb. 8. Occidental amassed 20 hits, with Logan Rooney contributing a home run, while the Gents committed five errors in the matchup. In the second game of the day, the Tigers suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat to Centenary (La.). Despite a strong start, scoring two runs in the second inning, the Tigers' efforts were not enough to secure the win. The game took a pivotal turn in the sixth inning when Centenary capitalized on an error and added two runs, moving ahead 4-3. for the Gents, Roman Ardoin started the game and was lifted after allowing three runs in 5.2 innings. Jacob Broussard came in and allowed a single base runner as he shut down the Occidental offense.

LaGrange won two games at the Firehouse Classic hosted by Huntingdon College in non-conference action on Saturday at Neal Posey Field in Montgomery, Alabama, winning 11-6 over Schreiner before an 11-1 victory over Berea. In the opener, LaGrange freshman second baseman Collin McGhee had four runs batted in and two stolen bases from out of the leadoff position, continuing his blistering start to his collegiate career. Playing their third game in two days, Colin Jones dominated game two with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third combined with a pair of sacrifice flies later in the game for five total RBI. Freshman pitcher Beau Collier picked up his first career win with three strikeouts and just one earned run allowed over five innings. Freshman pitcher Aiden Pluff dominated in relief with four strikeouts in two shutout innings. Through three games, the Panthers are averaging 9.66 runs per game.

The Eagles opened the 2026 season with a doubleheader sweep, 9-3 and 11-2, against Champion Christian College on Saturday at Lonnie R. Qualls Field. The Eagles used a big early surge and steady offense throughout to post a season-opening 9-3 win against Champion Christian, collecting 12 hits and swiping four bases in the win. The Eagles did most of its damage in the first and fourth innings, totaling nine runs. Offensively for the Eagles, Matthew McDonald went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The Eagles broke things open in the second game with a big middle inning and took advantage of defensive miscues to pull away for an 11–2 game two win. Champion Christian collected seven hits and drew five walks but couldn't capitalize, leaving 12 runners on base and striking out 12 times.

Texas Lutheran (3-0) completed the opening weekend sweep of Howard Payne with a pair of dominant wins over the Yellow Jackets at Katt-Isbel Field on Saturday. The Bulldogs have swept Opening Weekend in all three seasons of head coach Kyle Palmer '09's tenure. The Bulldogs scored in every even inning, cruising to an 8-2 series securing win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Howard Payne (0-3). Game one was highlighted by a 2-for-4, four RBI performance from Caleb Small. In game two, TLU scored in each of the first three innings, cruising to a 14-4 run-rule victory over Howard Payne to complete the sweep. The Bulldogs totaled double-digit runs for the second time this weekend and totaled 16 knocks, including four extra base hits in the win.

Late game heroics carried Redlands (3-0) to a doubleheader sweep of Whittier College, 2-0 and 7-5, Saturday as they finish off the series sweep. The Bulldogs and Poets pirtchers were on as the game was scoreless for seven and a half innings before the bottom of the eighth where the Bulldogs scored both of their runs. Erik Radder threw six scoreless innings before Tanner Currier ended the game with three scoreless innings as he got his first win of the season. It was a 2-0 Poet lead after four and half innings before the Bulldogs came back to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Whittier would retake the lead in the sixth only to see it vanish in the bottom of the inning for good. With darkness descending, Tate Keddington worked around a leadoff double with three consecutive strikeouts as the Bulldogs sealed the win in seven innings.

Brevard College (2-0) celebrated a successful opening day at Gil Coan Field, sweeping JWU Charlotte (0-2), 17-8 and 8-0 on a windy and cold Saturday afternoon. The Tornados battled back after surrendering seven runs in the top of the second in game one, outscoring the Wildcats 12-1 down the stretch to earn a season-opening nine-run triumph to begin the doubleheader. Brevard rode a dominant pitching performance to the eight-run victory, capping off the sweep. In game one, a massive seven-run fifth in addition to a run scored in the bottom of the sixth sealed the contest in favor of Brevard. Head Coach Vinny Carone's squad shut out the Wildcats in the second game of the doubleheader thanks to a dominant effort from its pitching staff. Senior right-handed pitcher Matthew Evans (1-0) secured the win with 4.1 innings on the bump, surrendering just three hits with six strikeouts. Kalen Milstead notched his first collegiate save with 2.2 perfect innings of work, striking out six Wildcats in the process.

Alex Henderson had a homer, a double, and three RBI as No. 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won for the second day in a row to start the 2026 season, defeating Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-3 on Saturday afternoon. In the fifth inning, CMS regained the lead when Carter Bennett tripled to left field, and Alex Henderson homered putting the Stags up 3-2. The Stags added to their lead in the seventh inning extending the lead to 5-2. Mary Hardin-Baylor managed to pull within 5-3 in the eighth, but the Stags responded in the ninth with three runs to help seal it. Henderson doubled to bring Bennett home, and Gordon drove home Henderson. Seluga capped the inning with a single that brought Gordon home, securing an 8-3 win for the Stags. UMHB's starting pitcher Alex Hill's 10 strikeouts today are the most by a Crusader pitcher in a single game in almost two years.

St. Thomas (Texas) team wrapped up its opening weekend on the road with a split against Hardin-Simmons on Saturday in Abilene. The Celts claimed a 7–5 win in the opener before dropping the nightcap, 13–3, in seven innings. With the split, UST moves to 1–2 overall as the Celts prepare to turn their attention to conference play. St. Thomas struck first in the opener only to see Hardin-Simmons answered with a pair of sacrifice flies over the next two innings to briefly move ahead, but the Celts responded with a momentum-shifting fifth inning. The Cowboys trimmed the deficit with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, but St. Thomas answered once more in the seventh. The Celts carried their energy into the nightcap, jumping out to an early lead. Hardin-Simmons responded with a big third inning to take a lead and pulled away over the middle innings with timely hits and extra-base damage, eventually building a lead that ended the game after seven innings.

Cal Lutheran delivered a statement response on Saturday afternoon at George "Sparky" Anderson Field, sweeping a doubleheader against No. 22 McMurry to secure the weekend series after dropping the opener on Friday. The Kingsmen combined timely pitching, opportunistic offense, and an explosive nightcap to earn wins of 4-2 and 17-6, improving to 2-1 on the young season. The Purple & Gold opened the day with a come-from-behind victory in the series-leveling contest, leaning on strong relief pitching and capitalizing on War Hawk errors. The nightcap turned into an offensive showcase as the Kingsmen erupted for 17 runs on 15 hits, pulling away from McMurry with a decisive performance.

Asbury (2-0) used timely hitting and clutch at-bats to secure their first two wins of the season in Millington, Tenn., against the University of Dallas (0-2) 8-5 and 9-8. Head coach Wynn Harris earned his first career win in game one of today's doubleheader, after serving the past three seasons as an assistant coach for AU. Asbury fell behind early but broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring five runs highlighted by a three-RBI triple from Quinn Nobles that put the Eagles ahead, leading them to a 8-5 win. After trading momentum throughout the game in the nightcap, Asbury answered with a dramatic ninth-inning rally as Aaron Beaman's two-run double pulled AU within one, Brady Robeson tied the game with an RBI single, and Edison Burke drew a bases-loaded walk to walk it off, securing a 9–8 comeback win.

No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer defeated Pacific University 17-6 and 19-12 Saturday to sweep the series 3-0 over the Boxers. Jack Gold led Pomona-Pitzer in game one with five hits in five at-bats, blasting two homers, a double and two singles for four RBI. Will Parker also posted four RBI, including a three-run homer, while Sammy Lee added a solo home run. Will Polishuk was credited with the win from the mound, going 6.0 innings and fanning a career-high eight batters while giving up just four hits. Greg Pierantoni and Tanner DeGrazia paced the team in the final game of the three-game series with four RBI apiece. Cooper Berry went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Kai Gonzaga posted three RBI. Max Brunngraber was credited with the win from the mound, going 1.1 innings in relief and striking out three without giving up a hit.
